Garver, Slegers win Twins minor league awards

The Twins announced this afternoon that Mitch Garver was named the 2017 Sherry Robertson Award as the minor league player of the year.

 

They also announced that Aaron Slegers had been named the 2017 Jim Rantz Award winner for minor league pitcher of the year. 

 

Garver had been named the Twins Daily MInor League Hitter of the Year. The TD voters named Stephen Gonsalves the Starting Pitcher of the Year, and John Curtiss the Relief Pitcher of the Year.

Congratulations to both.  Both deserved it.  Although I agree with TD that Gonsalves was the Minor League Pitcher of the year.

I voted for Slegers for starting pitcher of the year and Nick Anderson for relief pitcher of the year. Neither won, but it's fun to see Slegers get the Twins nod.

Hard to agrue against Slegers's 15-4, 3.40, 1.234 WHIP, 148-1/3 IP, unless you are Clark Beecker  (12-4, 2.63 ERA, 1.058 WHIP, 143-2/3 IP) or Dereck Rodgriguez (10-6, 3.27 ERA, 1.193 WHIP, 143-1/3 IP), both of who pitched about the same MiLB innings and better than Slegers. 

 

It was Beecker's award all the way.

 

Hard to argue against Garver's .291/.387/.541, 17 HR, 45 RBI, 372 PA .408 wBOA, 159 wRC+, unless you are Jonathan Rodriguez (.303/.408/.518, 22 HR, 78 RBI, 544 PA, .424 wOBA, 173 wRC+) or Brent Rooker (.281/.364/.566, 18 HR, 52 RBI, 261 PA, .415 wOBA, 161 wRC+) who deserve it more than Garver.

 

I can see why they might not want to give the award to a short season player, but there is no excuse not to give to Rodriguez who was better than Garver, other than the political fact that Garver was drafted by the Twins, whereas Rodriguez was in his first year with the organization.

 

Kind of a shame...

Maybe age was considered with the awards? Slegers is two months older than Beeker and a bit younger than D Rodriguez. He was 2-3 levels higher in the organization. Same for Garver and J Rodriguez - a 26 yr-old AAA catcher v. a 28 yr-old AA 1B.

Glad they both got a taste this season as well. We'll have openings at catcher and pitcher next season.

If Palka had posted Garver's numbers the rant to have him in MLB would have drowned out even Buxton's year.

Good for Garver. Hope they give him a legit shot as the backup next year.

Probably both deserve the honor, but neither is a lock to leave Fort Myers next year with the major league club. The top prospects of past years are now in place in Minnesota--Berrios, Polanco, Kepler, Sanó, Rosario and Buxton. There aren't many future regulars in the high minors, particularly among the position players. If the regulars stay healthy, there really isn't a real need for help from the minors.
