Nik Turley to start Sunday

So, 3 runs in 4 innings is good? I'm so confused.

If he had stayed in to complete that inning, it may have been 3 runs in 5 innings. Not good, but serviceable, esp. as start #1.

And yes, I would call 4 in 4, or 3 in 4, an OK first crack. Not sure why you don't.

Because people aren't saying "for his first start"......and, he didn't stay in for 1 more inning.

It is expected, but that doesn't make it good, imo.

Molitor made the wrong value judgment a few times this game. Broken record there, no point in getting into it....

Yes you're right about this not being a stellar performance. Unfortunately he might be one of the better arms on the staff, though, assuming he sticks around, and as first starts go, he did OK.

It is neither a good start, nor a bad start.

He did not lose the game, he did not provide anything to win it either.

He ate up for innings of a game

His WAR is 3 best for Twins starter but suffers from sample size

At best he may have learned what not to do.

I'd give him another start, too, but there wasn't much to like about his performance yesterday. Perhaps just a bad day, but his command was awful. The only thing he could get over the plate was a fastball, and he couldn't spot that.

I saw some promise in his first start. Looking at fastball velocity, first pitch strikes and swinging strikes there is some reason to be think encouraged that he can be a number 5 starter. He was probably in the strike zone a little too much and too many of his misses wouldn't get any swings. He needs to be better at both.

On the whole, his start was more encouraging to me than what we have seen from the other spot start call ups. With the double header, he should get another start and maybe he will offer more reason for hope.

Turley is under team control for 6 seasons including 2017, until his age 33 season.  He was lights out at AA and good (albeit unlucky - .368 BABIP, 66.3% LOB%) at AAA.  He improved his command and increased his velocity this season.  He is a lefty.  LHSPs do not grow on trees.  The Twins should give him any possible chance to succeed.

He is not Buddy Bo or Scott Diamond.  He had video game numbers at AA...

This post is quite premature imo. He should get more chances since he wasn't awful and the Twins only have awful replacement options but it would be great if he was as successful as Scott Diamond (one solid season).

24 IP of video game numbers...

I think Turley could be a dominant RP right now, but also think he could be a good 5-6 inning pitcher with a higher WHIP, but low ERA and plenty of K's. I think that either is useful on this team.
