Derek Falvey PBO?

But they aren't hiring him to do that anymore. They would be hiring him to run the show and the only show he has seen run has been the big market kind.  That's the point I'm trying to make.

McLeod worked in the Padres front office on two separate occasions, in addition to his stints with the Red Sox and Cubs.

Not that it should much matter -- if a guy looks like he might have the skills to set up a good drafting and development show here, does it really matter what MLB contracts his bosses handed out at past gigs?  If you insist on "small market payroll experience" as a requirement, you'd basically be cutting off hiring front office talent away from many of the consistently best organizations in baseball.

I agree that earlier is good, as there are a number of changes this team needs to make that can't wait until November.

But I wonder why the speculation is that McLeod wouldn't leave Chicago before November, but Falvey will leave playoff-bound Cleveland before the season is even over?  Neither one seems like they'd be in a position to actually do anything for their respective teams during the postseason.  I assume they'd both get invited to the executive suite throughout, plus a World Series ring if it comes to that.

I see Berardino and Bollinger are both saying "nothing's official" so maybe they are trying to postpone this a bit, although it would be hard to postpone it too long.

Bad week to announce a big hire like this.  Ryder Cup, Season Ending, Vikings Monday night game.  I could see next Tuesday as announcement day once everything else settles down.

I can't help but feel some of my excitement is dampened by the prospect of Antony sticking around. Also the fact the final list included Picollo, Falvey, Bloom, but not McLeod was disappointing. I'm hoping the fact he came from a large market while the other three were from smaller market, more familiar teams wasn't the deciding factor. Who knows, maybe Falvey comes in and guts this entire organization (fingers crossed!) It does feel a little like the Twins are holding on by their finger nails to the "old way." But hey Flavey put together some great pitching in Cleveland, so we got that goin' for us.....which is nice.

McLeod has been involved with GM searches before where he didn't get the job - he 'withdrew' his name from San Diego, for instance, but in reality that just means he knew he wasn't going to be a finalist. It could be that, within baseball, he is seen as more of a scouting dept. leader than overall organization leader. A president of baseball operations doesn't spend enough time in the trenches to fully leverage any individual skills at player evaluation. Ryan's failings are a great example.

So far as Falvey, we just don't know enough about the process to say why he got the job. I'm guessing all 5 finalists presented their vision for the organization and the powers-that-be thought Falvey had the right vision and skills to rebuild the organization. I'm also guessing that it was a two-way conversation, and that the Twins want that rebuilding to maintain some of the cultural aspects of the "Twins way," as ownership sees it, even as the actual baseball side is overhauled to compete in the modern environment.
