Maybe we're just talking past each other? You said the worst case for not extending him is that the Twins just lose him on the market and don't get to sign a couple Milones per year. (Which is strange, since they extended him for half that price yet we're complaining about it). But that is not a correct measurement of the worst case - the Twins would be out an all-star closer and, for the same money for which they could have had that closer, they would get a journey man reliever. Big difference. Which is why the Twins made the deal.

How many extensions has Ryan given out under that criteria? Perkins? Hughes? Redmond? Do we count the Radke, Santana, Mauer, Morneau, Hunter extensions prior to their contract extensions?

I wasn't very clear, by this:

He's a FA after this season. If he had remained all star level, he may have commanded $10-12 million/year in 2017 + 2018

I meant you could sign him to an extension now (if they would have held off back in 2014), and the Pohlad's are out ~$4million per year (he'd command a salary around $10.5 mill/ year in 2017+'18 if he continued to pitch at a high level, so 10.5-6.5(actual salary) = $4 million.

So in all reality the best case scenario was a mid 30s pitcher held up physically and pitched at an elite level, and the Pohlad's were able to save around ~$4 million per year by signing him 3 years early

Dozier, Hughes, Perkins are the recent examples

My issue is not trading him a couple years ago.....

Nah, Ryan knows that you rebuild a cratered major league baseball team around an experienced closer, the same way you put together a young NFL team on a foundation made of punter or kicker. ;)

Well this is a bummer.

Perkins is a class act and a helluva pitcher, it was very obvious that things haven't been right for sometime. Hopefully he is able to come back and be somewhat productive moving forward. I will certainly be rooting for him.

I'm not a doctor so I'm not going to pretend to know how these things are diagnosed. I will add that the Twins seem snake bitten for many years when it comes to diagnosing injuries, could just be bad luck...or something else. Beats me, but either way the end result is a big bummer.
