Sano to 3rd

Realized Sano wasn't very good at third and not wanting to keep him in the DH role as a 22 year old, they told him they were going to move him to the outfield.

Please. Did you watch the game today? Nationals player bunts, Sano charges, bare hands it and guns the guy out. He is competent at the position. It's not that he isn't very good at 3rd base, it's that they already have an established 3rd baseman in Plouffe.

Not only that, but the club spent the better part of 5 years telling us how competent he looked at third base.

So either they were lying they or they are lying now.

The path of least resistance would suggest they are lying now since theyou kept him at third base in the minors.

They'd have tried him in the OF then if they truly thought he couldn't play third.

There's no question in my mind that he's good at that particular play - it's what gives hope he can become a good fielder.

I wish he showed more consistency on the plays involving hot smashes, popups, and so forth; on some of those I swear he seems to shy away from the ball.

This is very good news.  He was competent at 3B for several seasons in the minors.  He was incompetent in right for a few weeks in the majors.  This is where he belongs.

Way to go Molly, didn't know you had in in ya.

This is how messed up the Twins brass is thinking. If he is an outfielder then play outfield. How will be get better if he's not getting reps. Or he isn't going to get better so you make a desperate move to put him back at 3rd. When Plouffe comes back then we put him back in the outfield so he can perform at a below average quality that will be sure to come. Bottom line if this move doesn't make it clear to everyone that Terry Ryan has to go I don't know what it will take to convince some people. This is just messed up.

Let's ignore the scouting reports because you saw 1 play.  I guess that's why none of us are getting paid by a MLB team even if we know more than them.

I Personally don't believe that a game or 12 at 3B or DH will retard his development in the OF.

In my opinion... the most valid argument is that he isn't very good in RF.

Complaining that he's back at 3B for a game instead of RF because he lost reps makes it sound like you are so pissed at Terry Ryan that you can't see straight.

We've seen Sano make more than one play. His strengths and weaknesses at 3rd base and RF are not secret.

I'm sorry, I know this a subject that has been beaten to death at various points over the last year or so. But the Twins themselves have brought this back to the forefront again. I say this due to the current roster construction, due to injury and the such, not to mention initial roster construction, the start to the season, and the fact that Sano started at 3B tonight against the Indians after we were told initially he would not play 3B this season. (I believe barring anything catastrophic happening)

In the game tonight, unless I missed something, Sano did not receive a fielding chance until the late innings. When he did, it was a broken bat roller to him. All he did was charge, field, and throw a strike to Mauer at 1B. I fully admit that my familiarity of Sano at 3B is based on scouting reports, watching a few ST games, and watching some games last season. I'm quite certain there are various TD members who have seen him more than me, and live in person.

But what do I know or think I know? Despite being a large human bejng, he carries his weight very well and is a quality athlete. I get that maybe he has to grow up a bit more, (based on some previous news articles), and take his conditioning more seriously. But every scouting report I've ever read says he can play 3B, at least for a few years, works hard at it, and has the ability to improve. When I have watched him play, I've seen a few miscues. But I've also seen a lot of routine and quality plays showing good mkvement, decent hands, and a rocket arm. If Cabrera and Sandoval can be ML 3B on winning teams and MVP, big payday players, why on earth can't Sano?

While it is easy to shout roster mis-management, Park could turn out to be a great acquisition. It was impossible to predict Mauer becoming Mauer again. And Plouffe is a solid, quality player. (And unlike a FA signing or roster promotion, I do "get" how you couldn't bank on winning the rights to Park) Are the Twins being short sighted or stubborn? Are they simply flat out wrong with the way Sano has been handled? I know it's a touchy subject....spoken of before...but I really think we need to address it again at this time. And the Twins themselves have brought this up, unintentionally or not.

The only mistake that has been made was when Paul made the mistake of saying that he considered Sano an OF and would not play him at 3B.

That has now been rectified and that absolute is gone.

Playing RF will not kill him or us... Maybe Nunez... But not him or us.

Playing 3B on occasion and Plouffe sitting the odd game will not kill Sano, Plouffe or us.

Having multiple players who can do something wonderful for this team is not a logistical problem unless... the manager decides to make it a logistical problem by wasting someone on the bench while he plays struggling players who he thinks should be better but may not be at the moment.

Be thankful for the depth and enjoy Sano and Park and Plouffe and Mauer in the same lineup.

I'm not sure what scouting reports you have access to, but Terry Ryan has had mostly good things to say about Sano playing 3rd.

Here is a play Sano made last year.

These are the scouting reports I posted.  I think we would expect Ryan and other Twins officials to give positive reports on there players.  I bet Ryan would say he doing okay in the outfield.

I'm not saying he a good outfielder, but I think people belief that he good at third is mostly blinded by not wanting to see him in the outfield.  Long term he is a first or DH and I can understand not wanting to make a 22 year old a DH and Mauer is at first for the next 3 years.  You also have a average player at third, with a above average glove.  Sano's playing because of his bat, so why not try him in the outfield?

A little from column A and a little from column B.  The decisions they've made on this subject are just stupid and indefensible.

If it's the case that you are comfortable with Sano playing third than Plouffe should have been the one to move all along.
