Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 In theaters June 10th. One of the great ensembles of our time. http://www.silkroadproject.org/posts/the-music-of-strangers
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 Yep ... have heard them a few times. Yo-yo, of course, is just an amazing person. I have a few good Yo-yo stories.
formerly33 Verified Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 Hey, can this be a music thread? I've been meaning to start one for a long time, but never got around to it. I'd love to hear Yo-Yo stories.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 I just did my "10 essential albums" list on the current......but I just listed ten I really like, not the ten most important........ I used to listen to a ton of classical music, not so much lately. It is hard to find new stuff, and you can only listen to the same pieces so many times.

Which reminds me, Nina, the biopic about Nina Simone, starring Zoe Saldana, hits in April.

A lot of orchestra are doing downloads and whatnot these days rather than actual, physical CDs.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 Used to listen to a ton of Celtic, and some jazz. Maybe I've just changed from wine and "elitist" music to beer and rock over the last decade or so. I blame craft brewers and Fender guitar. We used to have "season tickets" to the Dakota, and the theater. I hope we pick that kind of stuff back up when we move this spring.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 Lots of new stuff out there. A lot of orchestra are doing downloads and whatnot these days rather than actual, physical CDs. How would you ever find it? Classical radio only plays the classics. Is there a good podcast/talk show for this kind of stuff?
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 How would you ever find it? Classical radio only plays the classics. Is there a good podcast/talk show for this kind of stuff?I only know the things we've recorded; some of it is only available on a download basis, some with CDs. There used to be a magazine that talked about new classical recordings, but I don't recall what it's called. Since I listen to live classical music just about every day at work, I'm less likely to purchase it.
formerly33 Verified Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 Another good way to find new stuff is to watch competitions. Or you can delve deeper into the lesser known composers of the past, or even the lesser known pieces by the greats. There's always more, and they're generally underrated. Except Finzi. Never listen to Finzi.
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2016 Author Posted March 24, 2016 You remind me how much I miss Schickele Mix.
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2016 Author Posted March 24, 2016 Also don't forget that modern cousin of classical; soundtracks.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 Unfortunately this is the closest thing to classical my musical taste buds get... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BLftES1du4
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 4 albums you'd want if you were stranded on a deserted island.........................go! Edit, I said it anyway Craig, Ha!
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2016 Author Posted March 24, 2016 4 recordings you'd want if you were stranded on a deserted island.........................go!Full album or individual songs? Makes a big difference.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 Full album or individual songs? Makes a big difference. Full recordings, I guess that's what you call them now. Back in the day you could just say "albums" or even "CD's", now the kids just look at you funny.

I'll start by ruling out the Collected Works of Yoko Ono.
formerly33 Verified Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 Unfortunately this is the closest thing to classical my musical taste buds get...Well no wonder, Van ... you don't eat the music. Oh wait ... you said *musical* taste buds. Okay ... but watch/listen to these - they just might change your mind. If you have a preference to any style and are interested in branching out, I'll be more than happy to oblige (this is just me trying to force my musical tastes on everyone and growing desperate because nobody else seems to agree with me). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsG0fNO-_QA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MmsHpUfj74 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYO9gTmCJTE And btw, I <3 L O V E <3 Lang Lang.
formerly33 Verified Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 4 albums you'd want if you were stranded on a deserted island.........................go!I'll leave the albums safe at home unless I also get some form of player. In that case ... FiestaNevermindHelene Grimaud's Chopin | RachmaninoffUm ... ummm ... Boston Brass' Christmas album (just in case I enjoy the hermit life and don't want to come back within the next 9 months) Also, Judge Wargrave, if I may.
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2016 Author Posted March 24, 2016 I'm having a tough time whittling it down to four centuries, or even four decades of the 20th Century. Beethoven or Queen?Copland or Johnny Cash?Dowling or Jerry Goldsmith?Billie Holiday or Stevie Wonder? I'll just bring four albums of bagpipes. Then if I get rescued people will understand. Check that; one album of bagpipes, one of Spanish guitar, one of Taiko drummers, and one with the Adagio for Strings on it. I have these, so I'll rip my own.

I do NOT like the cello playing in that version. The vibrato is weird and it just doesn't blend like others. I'd even take the Yo Yo/Ax version over that one.

Squirrel Community Moderator Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 I knew this would spark a debate. There's no debate here. All one has to do is listen. It's very apparent.

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 Btw, I did the Current's 10 essential albums list thingy.....it is really hard to say only 10 albums. I did not pick the most important, or the best, but ones I come back to over and over. I would have put Beethoven's 9th on there, but that seemed silly given it was the Current. Also, I could not pick a jazz album by name.....so no jazz made it. This list is just the music I put on the most often, by far. I feel like the Beastie boys should replace the Clash, given that i listen to them more, or maybe Peter Gabriel's So, or American Idiot...... Stupid work is blocking the ability for me to do this easily....guess I'll type it (these are not in order): XTC - Oranges and Lemons (could be skylarking, but whatever)Dee Lite - World Clique (one hit wonder, but 4 great songs on here)Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues (this is the one that got me to them)Arctic Monkeys - AM (the only current album on the list, but the Black Keys or Jack White would be on a longer list)Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (unreal, so good still)Weezer - Weezer (blue)Soul Coughing - Irresistible BlissDevo - Freedom of Choice (almost went with the first one instead)The Clash - London CallingNirvana - Nevermind Really wish there was room for classic rock, like Zepelin on there.....
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 We have some crossover there Mike. Weezer Blue album is the correct answer. Though the green album comes in a close second. Big fan of the Arctic Monkeys. I was not expecting the band members to look the way they do.. Throwback to the 50's with them. Nirvana Nevermind was one of the best albums in the 90's..
