Another modest proposal...

I would never have mentioned this if it wasn't a recurring issue. It's not a real big deal, but I keep having posts deleted without getting a follow up PM to let me know. I've noticed this several times over the past month or so, and it's beginning to get a little old. I don't mind having posts deleted...it's part of life...but I'd like to know when they are. If I'm noticing this happening, how often does it happen without me knowing? If the mod who deleted the post would just let me know I'd be far less likely to make a similar post in the future. I try to be a good poster and follow the rules; I know I've had my moments, but haven't we all? And one can't deny that I've been good about not trolling since receiving a warning point. And believe me, there have been moments when I've been tempted to do so.

I don't think this is too much to ask. It makes complete sense...when the mods delete a post, just send a brief PM to the member to let them know. They don't even need to say why or wherefore (though that would be helpful at times), but I think it would be common courtesy to just send out that PM. What would it take? - 30 seconds at the very most?

And Always33, you don't need to jump in here and tell me to live with it. I'm not complaining about anyone. It's just, to borrow Craig's words, a modest proposal. It's reasonable. It's not like I'm complaining about how the last post didn't even need to be deleted since, if it really was that bad, they could easily have taken out the offending paragraph and left the rest. The second half was just the kind of post one would want to see on TD anyway...relevant, thought provoking, polite...this was a case of overreaction to be sure.

But I'd still like to see a little respect from the mods towards the posters by sending a PM when posts are deleted.

We tend to try and send PMs, but that isn't always the case.  Usually if no warning/PM is attached it's b/c you and/or others quote a post that we removed and so we decided to simply hide yours to eliminate the offending post and end that chain of discussion.  It's often an issue of lots of posts being removed and as such the PMs don't always go out.

Also, when posts are reported, we often hide them initially if we want to discuss it.

Usually it's b/c we hid a few and did not have time to handle the PM.  Hope that helps.  We all have jobs and other things goin on that often limit our own interaction with the site.

Also, when you begin a post with 'This will probably get a thread lock so I'm going to get this in here before that ...' or 'I'll probably get a warning for this but ...' chances are you shouldn't have made that post anyway and shouldn't be surprised to no longer see it. Keep in mind as well, when you go so off track to mention someone's girlfriend in a post, that's getting a bit personal, too.

And as diehard mentioned, we get busy, too. While we try to PM everyone, it's not always possible, and some things are just so obvious.

I understand Diehard's post...makes sense. Except the posts I'm talking about weren't a chain reaction. And I've gotten PMs for those chain comments, anyway. And again, not always the case? It has been the past couple months for me. Are you admitting that you're purposefully singling me out and have kind of washed your hands of me since I'm not worthy of this site? Maybe it's always33 the case.

And as for ChiTown's post...I didn't notice any such post being deleted, but if it was, too bad. I understand. Maybe it should have been moved though, since it was a good discussion albeit slightly off topic, but it's fine. Really. Back to the topic on hand, it would've been fine if you'd gone ahead and deleted the offensive paragraph, but why not leave the rest? You left Dave's response. But there's still a gap where the post was, so maybe that means it's still just hidden and you could put it back up but delete the comment about Dave's weight. Then there wouldn't be any weird break in an otherwise good discussion.

Anyway, I apologized to Dave when I realized that people didn't approve, and he's cool with it.

And by the way, if you don't have time to send me a PM when you delete my comments, one would hope that you won't have time to send me a warning when you see those comments recurring. That's all I have to say.

I didn't delete it. But I can see that it was. I'll let the moderator who did such that you expect his attention with a PM.

I don't need a PM from him. I know it was deleted. What I was asking was that in future instances we do get PMs. And I'm not going to press the point anyway since the modest proposal has been answered: no, the mods don't have time to do their job. It's too bad but I don't mind since it's completely volunteer work and you can't expect anything from that, and for the most part you've gone above and beyond any expectations I could have of you. I guess it's just something I'll have to live with.

But....but.....

That's all I have to say.

Honestly, we have lives, not everything requires an explanation and to be frank I don't have time to pm every post I delete. If you get a warning point, you'll get a pm.

One could argue that with any post that needs to be deleted, the poster should have known better and therefore doesn't need a PM, ever. And I didn't ask for an explanation...all I wanted was to be notified when a post is deleted.

Idk, maybe Brock could work something into the system so we get notified every time one of our posts is deleted. We don't need to know who, you don't need to waste 30 seconds of your precious time, and everyone's happy. Then you'll never need to send anyone an explanation, except maybe newbies who aren't familiar with the commenting policy, and it would still be up to the moderator's discretion as to whether a PM was called for. And you could even give new members 24 hours to familiarize themselves with the commenting policy like SB Nation.

And really, how many times do I need to say that an explanation isn't required? Like I've said time and time again, I'm hardly surprised my [paragraph, that is] was deleted. I was a little surprised that the whole post got deleted, but that still isn't the point, though I did stray to it. The point is that it was mere coincidence that I noticed it - and others - were deleted, and if I hadn't, I probably would've thought you were more lax than you are. If we got a notification for every deleted post, we'd be more aware of exactly where you draw the line and you'd have less posts to delete in the future. It'd be a win-win situation for all involved.

I'll add my two cents ( and these are my thoughts only, not those of other mods):

I have a pretty strict policy against editing other's posts. I don't want you editing mine, so I won't edit yours. Therefore, in my case, if part of the post needs to go, it all goes. I won't even lop off part and leave the rest. I have on occasion corrected spelling if I thought it was important, but that's as far as I go with editing.

As others have said, I don't always have time for a PM. Sorry, but that's the truth. If I think it necessary, I follow up with a PM later. For example, I recently deleted a post by mistake (on my phone...damn things) and I sent a PM to the member apologizing. In this case, I probably wouldn't have...IMO the post in question was rightfully hidden and a PM really wasn't necessary. You obviously knew, and don't have questions about why...so what is it a PM would have accomplished?

Sigh...my point is that if I'm noticing this happen, how often does it happen that I don't know? But obviously none of you are willing to make any changes...and that's okay. I should have known better than to even start this thread. It's certainly accomplished nothing.

And anyway, you have sent me PMs over deleting non offensive posts before, even ones that were one of those chain discussions that Diehard mentioned. For instance, the PM you titled "'Idiot' post" back in June. Maybe the times they are a-changin'?

Okay, I want to delete this now, lol. :) I got my answers and that's all I wanted, and the thread is definitely not contributing to TD. It won't let me delete it though. :(

And by the way, I'm not using this as a melodramatic last resort or anything of the kind. Honestly. It might sound like it but it's not. And also by the way, the answers I mentioned are acceptable by my book. I'm cool with the way things work. I don't know how to make this sound sincere since I tend to be rude and sarcastic, but anyway...just believe me and please delete the blasted, obstinate thread for me. :)

ETA: And hey, if you do, don't bother PMing me. ;)
