Badsmerf Verified Member Posted September 18, 2017 Posted September 18, 2017 He isn't, but I don't think they have a better option. I was hoping green would be head and shoulders above these guys, but it's tough to know what's going on behind the scenes. I like the pay calling, and can see how a good qb would take this team a long way. Fleck will get some talent I think. The problem with everyone since mason, was identifying talent. That shouldn't be a problem at a power 5 program. Even Wyoming can recruit qbs once on a while.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 It is nice to see that they can actually play football this year but are they going to wear horrifically ugly jerseys every week?the goldy helmets were the best ever. twinsnorth49 and biggentleben 2
kab21 Verified Member Posted September 22, 2017 Posted September 22, 2017 the goldy helmets were the best ever.I can dig that. Just stop with this all yellow or all white from head to toe nonsense.
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 And this is why I hate scheduling cupcakes in non conference. Those games should NOT count towards bowl eligibility- that would discourage teams from scheduling them. You get a false (and meaningless) sense of their abilities. This defense is getting shredded by a team that was mediocre at best, before they were down to their third string QB. It also is terrible at preparing a team for conference play. They suddenly find themselves playing against a team that actually is capable of beating them after playing zero competition all nonconference season. The rules need to change, because as they stand now I totally get why a mediocre team is tempted to get 3 or 4 free wins towards a bowl berth.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 Not watching the game, but 150 passing yards through 3 quarters is a complete joke. Can't win games like that, doesn't matter who you play. How bad has Rhoda looked? The first 3 games he looked below average at best, guessing he is being exposed more. I can't wait for the day the gophers have competent qb pay again.
drjim Provisional Member Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 The chance to have a good season almost certainly went out the window when they changed coaches. Might pay off over the long haul, but there is a short term cost as they change systems and turn over personnel.
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 That may have been the worst tackling game I've ever seen. Really bad loss to a mediocre team at home.

I can't wait for the day the gophers have competent qb pay again. The worst part about Rhoda is there's no threat of a QB run, which has led to a terrible rushing offense so far. Rhoda actually looked pretty good passing in the 4th quarter, until the interception late anyway.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 Disappointing loss. I didn't expect much, but 500 in the big ten is going to be a lot to ask for.
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 Disappointing loss. I didn't expect much, but 500 in the big ten is going to be a lot to ask for.You have to think Maryland on a third string QB is going to be the easiest Big10 opponent on the schedule, right? Forget .500, I'd be searching for a conference win.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted October 1, 2017 Posted October 1, 2017 Maryland isn't actually that bad. Still, disappointing. Defense got shredded.
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted October 1, 2017 Posted October 1, 2017 (edited) Maryland isn't actually that bad. Still, disappointing. Defense got shredded. They were 3-6 last year, and playing their third string QB, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. The Gophers were expected to be mediocre, and yet were 15 point favorites. EDIT: They were coming off a 28 point loss to powerhouse Central Florida, and were down another QB since. They aren't just bad, they are awful. And they rolled over us. Hopefully this is rock bottom, and a wake up call to the players and coaches that the game isn't played with nonsense cliches and catchphrases. Edited October 1, 2017 by Mr. Brooks
drjim Provisional Member Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 I loved the P.J. Fleck era.I really, really hope I'm wrong, but haven't liked it since the day he was hired. Out, out brief candle. Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 (edited) Embarrassing losses to Maryland and Perdue. Really no excuse for 101 passing yards in an entire game. I'm glad I didn't watch it, I'd have come unglued. I don't see another win for this team the rest of the year. Sad state for a team inches from beating Penn State and Michigan a year ago, and thumping Washington state in a bowl. Edited October 8, 2017 by Badsmerf
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 Yeah, Fleck is a joke. I hope his buyout isn't too much. It really is unreal how Gophers football can just never get it right.
snepp Verified Member Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 It really is unreal how Gophers football can just never get it right. Man, that 1960 team was something else though... ...from what Chief tells me. Mr. Brooks 1

Sad state for a team inches from beating Penn State and Michigan a year ago, and thumping Washington state in a bowl. In all seriousness, the weather had a lot to do with that. The wind was ridiculous and unpredictable, which made throwing for both sides difficult. Rhoda had some nice throws also get dropped. I will say that I don't care if he's 6'10" or not, throw the damned flag for DPI on guys when they're draped on Wozniak. Both tight ends had multiple DPI calls blatantly missed today to the point where my wife and foster daughter hollered at the TV.
biggentleben Verified Member Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 Not making excuses of course, but still....today's weather was absolutely nuts.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 The Rhoda era needs to end as well. He's going to continue getting eaten alive out there. Why not give a Freshman a chance to spark the team?
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 Yeah, Fleck is a joke. I hope his buyout isn't too much. It really is unreal how Gophers football can just never get it right.I'm starting to get Brewster flashbacks...
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 I still think PJ is a good hire and will be the best Gopher coach since Warmath. He inherited a team that didn't recruit well enough the last couple years. Particularly at skill positions. Let's give him more than two B10 games.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 At least Fleck has been successful. I'm not willing to close the book on him already, this is just a brutal start. He won't win a single big ten game this year and miss a bowl game for the first time since Kill took over. Maybe they will surprise me. It isn't Flecks fault he took over a barren cupboard at qb, d-line, o-line, wr, lb. That isn't easy, but when you see someone failing (Rhoda) and have other options you have to use them. I want to know why we haven't seen Green yet. Croft is just as bad as Rhoda so I'm over him too.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 15, 2017 Posted October 15, 2017 Hopefully last night was a turning point. Croft looked way better. While not polished, he can move in the pocket and make plays. I'm guessing Rhoda lost his job. The defense still was eaten alive, until that is fixed it's going to be tough to beat big ten teams.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 Croft looked awful against Illinois. If Illinois was even a halfway decent team, this should have been a loss. It's a coin flip next week in the battle for Floyd. Iowa gives up 235 passing yards a game, ranking 12th in the conference. It doesn't seem to matter who the coach is, the Gophers always seem to throw the ball to one guy, and one guy only. Fleck and co. need to come up with a game plan to spread the ball around.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 Croft is terrible, Rhoda is terrible. I couldn't believe they stuck with Croft on the second half. I think Tyler Johnson and Wazniak are alright. Smith would be an excellent receiving back too. Play calling has really bad all year. The running plays looked better on Saturday, so I'll give them that. The next 4 games are winnable. Iowa is pretty bad, and Nebraska/NW are meh, Michigan is not very good either. Without better qb play forget about it. Vanimal46 1
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 I guess they're just rolling with Croft for the time being. He's already named the starter against Iowa. Though I can't imagine Seth Green is worse than Croft.

Though I can't imagine Seth Green is worse than Croft. That performance against Illinois was a disaster. It was bad enough for a d3 qb to lose their spot. I wonder what the deal is with a Green. I have to think they'll give him some time this year. Hopefully it isn't mop up time against Wisconsin. Vanimal46 1
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 Seth Green must be the most overhyped prospect to ever come into college football, if he's not even good enough to be in the mix over Rhoda and Croft. Mike Sixel 1
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 29, 2017 Posted October 29, 2017 Not watching the game, but I see Croft is continuing where he left off last week. 5-18 for 46 yards and an interception. This is the best guy this team has? Rhoda and Croft... And leidner. Kill and co really messed this up.
