Back spasms, not good.

If only we had a young fireballer in AAA who could maybe come in and dominate....

Damn, that's bad news. The two-headed monster of Jepsen/Perkins was looking pretty good. Use the best guy for the job that night.

Neither pitcher is extraordinary but if used correctly, both have the ability to put up video game numbers if facing mostly same-side hitters.

But Dave, this was totally unforeseeable, so how could we have adjusted our plan for Berrios slightly to make him a potential bullpen option down the stretch in 2015.  Oh wait, Perkins similarly got hurt and faded in 2014, and already showed signs a repeat performance in July 2015....

It's just time for the relievers we've buried on our depth chart all season to step up and perform, that's all. :(

That sucks about Perkins, but a moderator note:

If this turns into another Berrios/Ryan's decision thread it will be merged or locked and removed.

I missed this article from Berardino talking about Perk's neck:

Someone on this board speculated he tweaked something at the ASG, seems they were right more or less.

Can't help but wonder about the timing of the back injury, wonder if he hurt it while battling through the neck. I'm not sure which sounds like less of a fun time. Would be awesome if some treatment helped him back on the field in the next couple weeks, or at least October if we're lucky.

I certainly hope no one is suggesting wasting Berrios as a closer--a complete waste!  If Berrios fails as a starter (a la Perkins) then move him to the bullpen.  There should be plenty of RPs in the system to audition as closer--perhaps even two or three which would permit a "bullpen by committee".

It's very possible. I've had various hand, arm and shoulder issues through the years. I've learned to 'listen' to the smallest tweak, even if it seems like nothing and doesn't really hurt, because your body will overcompensate in other places and that can just make matters worse.

And it's really hard to know when you need to just 'work through it' or stop and evaluate or stop and rest.
