Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Ah, whack-a-mole. Good times.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 We've got 2 goodies to end the week on....Today is National Puzzle Day! I love puzzles. It's not too often I pull out a jigsaw puzzle anymore, but word puzzles and games are my thing. I, too, love puzzles, but I still also do jigsaw puzzles. This was a Christmas present ... a jigsaw puzzle table. And it folds up quite nicely, too.

Hrbowski Verified Member Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 Apparently today is National Croissant Day... Who comes up with all of this? When is National National Day Day? That looks kinda confusing.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Happy Monday. Hope everyone had a good weekend. I hate to rub it in, but it was 80 degrees and sunny both Saturday and Sunday in Austin Today is National Serpent Day! I can't stand snakes of any kind. If they were extinct from this planet, that would be perfectly fine with me. Today is also National Baked Alaska Day! I've never heard of this dessert before, but it sounds good! Baked Alaska is made with hard ice cream on base of sponge cake and covered in a shell of toasted meringue.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2016 Author Posted February 1, 2016 Baked Alaska is good, but not something you have to have..... I like snakes, very cool. And, yes, many around the country have been mentioning the temps to me lately....thanks,
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 I believe Minneapolis will be lifting the ban on reptiles as pets sometime this year. I had turtles as a kid, they were fun.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Turtles would be a fine pet to have. Snakes, absolutely not. I would kill every one on the planet if I had the time, and technology to do it. Just don't turn Minneapolis into Florida. Where those folks thought having pet snakes were cool, and grew too big for their homes. They set them loose in the wild, and are destroying the Everglades too.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Snakes, no. They make me scream and act irrationally. Baked Alaska I'v heard of but have never tried. Temperatures are unseasonably warm here. True, not 80, but I'll take not -10.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 I hate snakes, there is something wrong with you if you like snakes, especially big ones. Never had Baked Alaska, what a strange name for a dessert, right up there with Nanaimo bars (although if they're half as good as the latter I'll overlook it). It's unseasonably warm here as well..................................wait, I'm in Florida, no wonder. Nevermind.

People down there thought it was a great idea to have snakes for pets, and didn't realize oh yeah, snakes get big....
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Today is National Groundhog Day.. Here's to hoping for an early spring for all of you up north. And also, watch out for that first step! It's a dooozey! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqSYC_vwhDg

Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Here we go...Today is National Carrot Cake Day! I wouldn't say that's a cake I seek when I feel like cake, but every once in a while it really hits the spot. Today is also National "The Day the Music Died" Day. Remembering the 1959 fatal plane crash in Clear Lake, Iowa with the "Big Bopper" trio.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2016 Author Posted February 3, 2016 My wife makes AMAZING carrot cake, but we are on a no sugar kick right now......sigh.
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 I love carrot cake; we had it for our wedding cake. And bye bye, Miss American Pie.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 I love carrot cake; we had it for our wedding cake. And bye bye, Miss American Pie.My sister did, too. Fabulous recipe ... which I make for the crew at work a couple times a year. They beg for it.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 My wife makes AMAZING carrot cake, but we are on a no sugar kick right now......sigh.I think this national day should trump your no sugar kick. Start planting the seeds now... Just send some messages like how good does carrot cake sound right now? You know, Jimmy from the office has a birthday tomorrow, maybe I should bring in some carrot cake. Then again you're the seasoned pro of marriage. You could probably teach me some tricks of the trade on getting desserts made for you.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2016 Author Posted February 3, 2016 The secret to marriage is to be an adult about everything in life, and to get lucky in marrying the right person. But then, that's the secret to almost all of life. Just be an adult, and don't get pissed over stuff that just doesn't matter all that much...... If she's going to break her sugar "fast", it will be chocolate related, I'm sure.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Just be an adult, and don't get pissed over stuff that just doesn't matter all that much...... I think this is a good sig line for moderators at this site. Thanks.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Carrot cake is easily top 3 on on the National Days calendar......I absolutely love it.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Here's something that will warm you up today...Today is National Homemade Soup Day! I used to not care for soup, because that's all I ate when I was sick. Now, I love it! Tomato Basil... Chicken Noodle.... Chicken n' Dumpling.... Does chili also count as soup? Or a completely different category? Texas chili is pretty dang good too.Today is also National Thank a Mail Carrier Day. Considering I live in an apartment, I couldn't tell you what my mail carrier looks like. But for those with homes, thank him or her today!
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 I love soup. Does Ramen count?
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Soup? Pho and Matzo ball and the Lebanese shish barak are my favorites, although the latter may be considered a stew. http://www.mamaslebanesekitchen.com/stews/shish-barak-recipe-meat-dumplings-yogurt/#sthash.1ZPYqRXi.dpbs
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 My wife makes amazing soups, pea, beef barley, chicken, butternut squash, just to name a few, I'm pretty lucky in that regard. Pho is probably my favourite go out for lunch choice at work. Could eat it almost everyday. I believe Chili is a stew, I enjoy a good chili, as well as making one. My neighbourhood has those multi mailbox units you have to walk to, so I too have no clue what my mail person looks like, but if I happen upon them, I'll thank them for delivering all my bills without fail.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Author Posted February 5, 2016 Today is national shower with a friend day. We have a two person shower in our house, it is one of the things I'll miss most when we move. Unfortunately, she worked out this am, so we did not shower together......

I'm calling over share on this one.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Isn't it ironic that Mike jumped at the bit to introduce this national day?
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Author Posted February 5, 2016 Isn't it ironic that Mike jumped at the bit to introduce this national day? I felt bad you were doing all the work lately.....I had no idea what day it was until I looked.
