And....today is....pfeffernuss day. My grandmother and mother both used to make huge batches of these. I like them. I miss them, sort of.

You only sorta miss Granny and Mom? Or just the cookies? :)

Meh. I don't mind bacon, as its own thing, fried to a crisp along side some eggs. But I hate that it's in everything you try and order nowadays. I don't want bacon on my burgers, in my sandwiches (I'm not even that big a fan of BLTs anymore), and in my salads.

I don't even know how to react to such blasphemy, frankly.

The fact that they have found a way to put bacon into everything IMO is one of the greatest accomplishments we've made in recent memory!

I like crispy bacon, but there is such a thing as too crispy. I love that perfect in between of crispy outsides, and a little chewy inside.

Turkey bacon's not half bad either!

It didn't feel right to start up this thread after I returned from California without you Mike. Even the first week of the new year it felt like this on the thread..

Pretty boring national days the next week......but popcorn is coming up.

You guys missed a good one in Chicago yesterday. "No pants subway ride" Day. Yes, it's a thing. It was too cold so I didn't go out to ride the subways to check it out. And, well, eww. I'd need to bring my Chlorix wipes with me before I sat anywhere.

Happy Monday.

Today is National Winnie-the-Pooh Day. As a toddler I was known as Tigger, because I loved to bounce on any chair. Still do from time to time. That also resulted in me getting 3 sets of stitches on my face before my 3rd birthday....

Today is also National Peking Duck Day. I've had roasted and seared duck a few times, and the times I've had it I remember it tasting good.

More importantly, today is MLK Day. Wish I was in a profession to get the day off and golf...

Ooooou ... Peking Duck ... so yum! If it weren't so frikken cold out, I'd hop on over to Chinatown for some of that.

Pooh ... love Pooh ... :) Cottleston Pie!

Today is National Popcorn Day!

Little did I know how many flavors popcorn can be.. What's the best flavor that you've tried?

Garrett's caramel crisp popcorn. THE best! :) Of those I've tried.

I'm not a fan of the Chicago mix ... a mixed back of cheese and caramel crisp. It's okay, but I'd rather just have the caramel crisp.

I love popcorn. Of all kinds. Especially when my son makes it, lots of oil and salt* compared to when my wife makes it.

*edited, no idea why I put "butter" in there first.

I would say Chicago mix is one of my favorites... but sometimes you get a bag with too many cheese flavor kernels in there... much like you I'd rather have the caramel corn.

It's too cold to go up the street to Garrett's so will have to make do with what's in the vending machine ...

We've got a couple of goodies today.....

Today is National Buttercrunch Day! Toffee covered in chocolate or topped with almonds sounds like a great treat to me.

Today is also National Cheese Lover's Day! Maybe Always will come out of the woodwork to celebrate with us today. There's way more cheeses that I like than cheeses I don't like. However, I will say one that I do not care for is Blue Cheese...

It's also National DJ Day... And really, who cares....

Am I supposed to celebrate cheese, or people who love cheese? I think that one is badly named.....

Yes

My uncle sells cheeses for Sartori, so there are always good cheese options at family gatherings. My wife, however, is lactose intolerant, so I have had to learn to stomach non-dairy varieties.

Haven't met a cheese I've disliked that's for sure. Blue cheese is an acquired taste Van that's for sure but well worth persisting with. In many ways it's the King of cheese in how complex it is. I found starting with a good crumbly one was a good introduction and a way to build a taste for it, like a good English Stilton. After that some of the creamier ones are less intimidating.

And I agree, just say no to DJ day.

There are certainly some brands of blue cheese that are better than the others. I was turned off by it when I went to a restaurant and got a lettuce wedge topped with blue cheese. It was way too strong to handle, and I've basically switched to ranch ever since.

We have a good one to end the week on...

Today is National Blonde Brownie Day! A nice little curve ball from a normal brownie... I can get into that.

Ugh, most blue cheese dressings are gross imo.

Blonde brownie, like with white chocolate? How else would one make a blonde brownie?

It's probably obvious I'm not a baker eh?
