All those guys (except Alvarez I think, who I already noted) were already on the 40-man roster, or had recently been on the 40-man (maybe DFAs?), or in the case of Speigner, was on another team's 40-man (he was a rule 5 pick).

I don't claim to remember a vast majority of these guys listed in the trade examples... I recall Luis Castillo working out well. The one that stuck out to me and should include an asterisk is Johan Santana. He was a Rule 5 pick that year. The Twins had the #1 pick, Marlins #2. So essentially they swapped picks (cash received in deal) so the Marlins could select Jared Camp, and the Twins selected Johan.

 

I guess you could consider that a trade? But again, that goes back to the debate of does the credit go to the person scouting the player or the GM turning in the card.....
