Price (potentially) to the Jays

Not sure whether this is jumping the gun on making a thread when the deal isn't done and the early report is just now coming out, but that report is that the Jays are getting David Price from the Tigers.

Presumable ramifications for the Twins:

* Toronto is just behind them for a wild-card spot and is loading up.

...which doesn't bother me that much. The Twins might possibly ride a few small improvements and some better luck to hang on for a wild-card spot, but if they don't, there's a longer-term window for them to improve. Toronto is likely feeling a more urgent window to contend than the Twins are.

* Detroit is entering a rebuild phase to some degree and/or they didn't expect to resign Price.

I think this is good for the Twins any way you slice it. I don't see the Tigers fully blowing up their current team, but it'd be nice not to have Price beating up on the Twins as often as in-division matchups would have it.

Price was gone after this year. They sold high. That's bad for the Twins, isn't it?

Toronto traded for a 3B of the present, and future. Toronto signed the best catcher to a long term deal. Tulo has years left on his deal. They aren't mortgaging the future at all here, they are giving up part of it, to get other parts of it.

We'll this particular deal was a huge future gamble, but a justified one I think.

Price might provide some stability to a talented, but floundering, bunch of starters.

If this happens, wow. The Jays are really going for it. In their position, it's not a terrible idea. It's tough to win in a division with the Sox, Yankees, Orioles, and Rays. This could be their window and given how the Yankees/Sox spend whenever they see a lull, that window could close as soon as next season.

I would view this as an example of why proclamations last year that Detriot paying a stiff price for David Price would be a death knell to the Tiger organization were overblown.

The Tigers won the division last year, and now trade the last two months of Price for a package that includes a prospect rated higher than anything currently in the Twins minor league system.

It almost never hurts an organization to acquire premium talent.

Except when it does.

I mean the previous trade is what almost necessitates this one. I think both sides get overstated to be fair. The risk that a trade could seriously hurt your organization is certainly present, but it is probably not as high as others make it out to be.

Fair point about the Tigers selling high. What I meant was more that this deal may be an indication that the Tigers are preparing to rebuild or at least to retool significantly. Unless I missed some report about the Tigers giving up on re-signing Price (they do like to spend, after all), I think we know more about their likelihood of being a serious bidder for him today than we did yesterday.

Norris will be in their rotation next year. This isn't some a ball pitcher with massive question marks. They got a great, near term, prospect. If anything, it shows they are serious about the near term.

This a great get for the Tigers.  I swear the Tigers have 9 lives.  Just about the time you think they are gonna sink they pull another rabbit out of the hat.

They can't sign Price with all the other high priced guys they have so why not trade for a solid controllable asset.  Dombo does it again.  I wonder what they will do next?

Concur? But to make this solid theory work, you have to be willing to move that player if things do not work out as planned. Basically make German Potato Salad out of potatoes! :)

Agree but I think you are overstating opposition. Many people were in favor of the trade from Detroits perspective.

IMO Dombrowski is clearly among the top handful of GMs in the game.

I would agree. And next winter will fully clarify, and cement, Ryan's GM status. I truly think he knows talent. But is he going to be able or willing to make decisions next winter to straighten out the roster, by using some log jammed players to fill in some voids. This might require moving a couple solid veterans, but if he doesn't make some serious moves I do think we remain a middling team, wasting talent as we go.

Without question. Proven it in multiple locations.
