Dozier signs 4 year 20 mil deal

I like rewarding Dozier for a good 2014 and from all accounts, being a good guy and teammate.

But from a financial sense, I don't really get it... Especially without picking up any of his FA years.

With that said, it's same yearly money the Twins gave Mike Pelfrey so who really gives a rat's ass.

I like it. Makes total sense for both sides.

He'll make $2 million in 2015, $3 million in 2016, $6 million in 2017 and $9 million in 2018. He gets a little extra this year, but after that, assuming health and same numbers, the Twins get a deal the next three years. If he gets better, it's a great deal for the Twins.

I like that it is 4 years instead of 6 as well.

With the way the salary goes up, looks like it would have been around 22-24M for the two FA years if they were part of it, if not more.  I think the debate in here a couple weeks ago when rumors of an extension first came out was about what he'd get if it was 6 years?  Most of the numbers hovered around low-mid 40M.

When I was guesstimating contracts, I expected more like $24m to buy out Dozier's arb seasons.

$20m seems kinda low for a 27 year old coming off a 5 WAR season. It makes you wonder if Dozier was willing to take less in arb to avoid losing a FA season, all the while still getting a pile of guaranteed money.

I think I actually guessed 6 years for 42-44M.  Though I said I wouldn't be surprised if it was higher. I think we got a bargain, myself.  And it makes him valuable trade bait if he continues to perform like he has the last couple years.

Seems like a good deal for both sides.  Twins (if Dozier is still good) will get some sort of compensation when/if he leaves and he gets to still be young enough to get a good deal in FA.

I expected one free agency year, a total deal somewhere in the $36-40m range for five years. $24m in arb, $12-16m free agency year.

No problems with the deal; it is close to what he is projected to do in arbitration if you use Plouffe as a comparable and does not make him untradable.   Only thing is that it was really absolutely no need

I agree that this is likely a bargain for the Twins, they are getting all of Dozier's prime years with a reasonable amount of cash spent.

So... what are the chances that Dozier is a Twin beyond this contract? Guys like Polanco, Gordon, etc should all be ML ready before this contract is up, I'm guessing the Twins would be happy to let Dozier go to free agency in 2019

Or, if he's doing well, he gets traded in the next couple years.

No, they absolutely could have gone year to year.  Signing him now lets a potential trade partner know exactly what kind of salary they'd be taking on.

Awesome deal. The Twins lock up a good player through his prime at a good rate and Dozier gets a nice little bump this year and peace of mind for life.
