Berardino: Twins Interview Willis For PC

I guess I have a less simple criterion for "inside guy".  If you have a 30-year career, in several organizations, and you've spent the last 3 here, I would think of you as a guy who was familiar with the organization, but far from being a complete insider.  I doubt if Glynn forgot everything he learned at all his other stops over the last 3 years.  That hardly seems like an insider to me, but I guess everyone can pick their own definition.

Well I think the desire for fresh blood has less to do with whether the Twins have already indocterined the candidate into their preexisting theories, but more to do with the idea that it would be nice if they hired somebody they didn't already know intimately; someone not already in the clique.

It's more like asking them to go chat up the girl across the cafeteria you've never had the stones to talk to before instead of hanging with the same cycle of guys they've been eating with since the 3rd grade.

Certainly a reasonable way to do it.  You also hope that if they ask out the girl that moved away during 4th grade and came back in high school they are doing it because of who she is now rather than who she was back in the day.

I'm on the board of an organization that hired a new Exec Director a little over a year ago.  We desperately wanted fresh blood.  Unfortunately it turned out that we got fresh psycho blood,  so we removed the new person at some expense and now we're searching again. So I hope they look outside but I hope they are better predictors than we were.

That's the hope.  But when you have thus far exclusively asked out girls you knew in 4th grade, despite a large population of other girls in your high school, I am not sure I can give you the benefit of the doubt that you're really considering all of your options.

I like to imagine that somewhere right now, teenagers are using the Twins coaching hires as a metaphor for asking girls out...

I seriously don't believe the organization's problems have stemmed from the GM suffering crippling fear of rejection.

Noted in the article is how the Willis/Molitor conversation went regarding philosophy. To me that indicates there is not much "insider" with this candidate. My criteria is if there has been any common experience during TR's tenure, or even Molitor's, and how long that was. It would be interesting to see how other clubs and/or GMs fare in this area, like the Yankees, Red Sox, or even Cubs.

I do believe, maybe wrongly, that the familiarity criteria is down on the list, but it certainly has an impact never-the-less. It still comes down to getting the right person for the job, as Big Dog pointed out.

It is, however, a topic that is getting redundant, as far as I am concerned. There are two views and it seems like neither side has much wriggle room for change. So, maybe we should put this to rest and discuss the pros & cons of the candidates.

Given that, I like both of these candidates and would be happy with either, from what little I know.
