LEN3 reports that Fuld has turned the corner

Benching him (which Gardy apparently has done already). DFAing him (which Antony is capable of doing). Sending him to AA. I can think of a lot of ways to show you've given up on a player. Playing him everyday in the majors is not one of them.

 

Except, he's so bad that he can't even get off the bench for a career shortstop. This isn't about hitting breaking balls either, he can't really hit ANYTHING at a major league acceptable clip.

 

You're the one suggesting people are "giving up on him" for wanting to send him to AAA. It's really quite a strange position to hold.

It appears that all went well with Sam Fuld's "light" workout and BP with the returning club on Wednesday.Tyler Mason posted this story in-game and stated that Fuld could leave for a rehab assignment "as soon as Friday":

If all goes well, he could be heading out of town by Friday. Assistant general manager Rob Antony said Wednesday that Fuld will likely rehab with Double-A New Britain and could play in a game by Saturday.

"The last week or so, I haven't had any issues at all," Fuld said. "I started pushing myself more physically and as a result I actually feel better. I feel really good. I've been symptom-free for over a week. . . . I think the rough plan is to leave here Friday if everything continues to go well."

 

 

 

The New Britain Rock Cats are playing in Binghamton, NY, over the weekend, while the Twins begin a 10-day road trip headed to Toronto, Detroit and Boston next Monday, so it looks like the Twins will parachute Fuld into upstate New York and have him on the ready within geographical Road Warrior proximity of the big club.

 

For those fans who like to read the tea leaves on what's going to happen with the status of the 3 players involved in the CF issue, once Fuld is reinstated, there's this:

 

During the Twins' two-game series in Milwaukee, Santana had several throws from center field that missed the cutoff man by quite a bit.

 

"I'm not worried about him like I was earlier," manager Ron Gardenhire said of Santana.

 

"He's a good athlete who's trying to learn a new positions, so he makes some mistakes, and he also makes some decent plays," Antony said. "Gardy really likes what he can bring to the table offensively and add a little spark to the lineup, a guy who can run. It's a work in progress."

 

Aaron Hicks' name isn't among the numerous quotes from Gardy and Antony...

Where Hicks should be playing is a moot point if the manager has lost confidence and isn't going to let him off the bench. Then, Rochester it is.

 

I would rather let him flail in Minnesota and have Santana playing short in Rochester. Long term, that is a more important issue to the Twins and everyday he is playing center is just delaying his (hopefully) becoming a legit major league SS.

And this is why I fault upper management more than I do Gardy. Gardy has a boss and if his boss does nothing to rectify things, then I blame his boss. But back to the issue at hand, I think Hicks will be sent to Rochester as soon as Fuld is ready. Is it the right or wrong thing to do? I don't really know at this point. Whatever the long term or short term advantages are, the whole thing is a mess, and I hope that this hasn't ruined Hicks' career and that whatever happens, he can get it back on track wherever that is. I also hope this doesn't come back to haunt us one day.

[During his rehab time in New Britain, where he was 6-14 at the plate, Fuld] tested himself every way he could think of. “I did a lot of running, in the outfield, on the bases, a lot of first to third,” the veteran outfielder said. “I was out of breath a lot.”

 

 

Manager Ron Gardenhire would like him to stay that way. The outfielder will get plenty of playing time, Gardenhire said, now that Aaron Hicks has been placed on the disabled list because of a strained right shoulder.

 

“I’d be comfortable starting Fuld,” Gardenhire said. “He’s ready to play.”

Will Danny Santana continue to get most of the starts in center field?

“We’ll see,” Gardenhire said.

 

Fuld entered tonight's game against Detroit in the 9th inning as a pinch runner for Josh Willingham, and finished off the bottom of the 9th in LF.

With Hicks and Plouffe on the DL, Fuld is going to get more starts in CF and Santana will be re-acquainting himself with SS.

I'd rather see Fuld on the bench, with Santana in center, Nunez at third, and Escobar at short.

 

Unfortunately, Fuld didn't get arm surgery while he was out with a concussion.

I personally would rather go Esco 3B, Santana SS, Fuld CF, and Nunez "wherever somebody gets injured" and on the bench. I'm not sure how much it matters at this point in terms of win/loss record, but I think it'd be good for the Twins' SS to get some time at SS in the majors.

How is the hammy doing for Nuñez ? He sat out on Sunday, but I didn't watch or listen to the game, so I don't know if he's expected to be back soon or not. On the pre-game shows everyone said they were going to "wait and see" if he was ok.

Before the game, Gardy was talking DL. After the game, Phil Miller reported that Nunez thought he'd be back in a couple of games, at worst.

I did hear Gardy say at least twice on the pre-game that Nuñez should not be sitting on the bench injured for a week or more, that they would give him a couple days at most, but they can't afford to be short handed for that long. It was good to hear him say that given that they already went though that this year when Mauer was out for a week with his back issue. It may have been better to DL Mauer then, he certainly wasn't hitting well when he came back.

If Nuñez isn't in the lineup on Tuesday (or at least ready to come off the bench), my guess is that he will be on the DL retroactive to yesterday.
