  1. Haven't been a fan of Stewart the past few years as he hasn't become the pitcher one would hope for from a #4 overall pick. Must say that last night was encouraging, but just one night. Hopefully, he will put it together all year and EARN a 40-man roster spot this fall. Did I read correctly, Seth, that Rochester has double headers on May 25 and 27? Ouch. Hopefully their starting rotation is healthy going into that weekend. Was great seeing Rortvedt back in action after his injury scare a couple games ago. And what's up with Blankenhorn? Can't keep this up, but maybe he will become the player we hoped for when drafted out of high school.
  2. Like the addition, Seth. I guess you would call Hughes outing what, ok? Was good that he got thru 5 innings and isn't injured. Hopefully, he will get us thru until Santana comes back. But it is starting to look like that will be June rather than May. Waiting for Romero and Thorpe to make their first starts!
  3. This team is loaded, Seth. Although there won't be a lot of need if not to many Twins get injured, I suspect a couple of these guys will see some action at Target Field. The question is, who? The popular choices are probably Gordon and Jay. And I do expect both will get called up by September at the latest, after the Southern League Championship. But I am going to pick another position player who I think we will see before August 31, Rooker. Although none of us knows what type of year he is going to have, there is a good chance he has a huge summer...forcing the Twins to bring him up.
  4. Thanks Seth. Was great hearing about Leach. Also saw that the Bray and Rinn came over in trades. Haven't seen anything on what the Twins gave up to get them?
  5. I read somewhere awhile ago that it was his shoulder, I think the right one. Don't have a clue as to what it was or how serious, however, with the weather being what it is seems to make sense to wait a month.
  6. Haven't checked this, but I assume the Twins starting staff has the best ERA in the majors. Yes, I know it is only three games. I'll repeat that, it is only three games. But this was exciting. Were the first 8 innings from Berrios yesterday the best start of his career? Expect first game out he ran out of gas a bit in the 9th. I don't see any #5 pitchers in this group (once Santana is back). Rather see a couple #3's, a couple #2's and one legitimate ACE. Who knows, maybe this group will pitch the Twins to the promised land! Now before responding to my excitement, please go back and read my second and third sentences!
  7. Now that wasn't what you expect from your #5 starter. Or is it?
  8. Boy do the Twins need him to start the season like he finished last year. It is so important to win this opening series to get the season off on the right foot. And after that tough loss Thursday, you can't win this series without Gibby getting it done today. I really want to be excited about him this year. Please don't disappoint me, again!
  9. Seeing Mauer is #1 on this list, got me thinking. What will it take for him to have a good chance of getting into the Hall of Fame? I doubt that his chances are great if this is his last year. What do I see him doing to improve his chances? First, getting a gold glove at his second position...which he should have gotten last year. Second, one more season with an average above .300. And finally, I think he needs to get at least 2,500 hits. Assuming he ends this year with +/- 2,150, that would mean he would likely have to play at least another two years, probably three. I think he merits membership. Hopefully, he makes it!
  10. I have a question for those picking Romero as Rookie of the Year. Which of the starting five (Berrios, Santana, Gibson, Odorizzi or Lynn) do you see him replacing? Or do you see him coming up and pitching out of the pen? My picks are: Record 94-68, finishing 1st in the Central Division. They then win the first round of the playoffs, however, lose the ALCS in 7 games. Offensive Player of the Year: Eddie Rosario Most Home Runs: Eddie Rosario Starting Pitcher: Lance Lynn Relief Pitcher: Gabriel Moya Rookie of the Year: Gabriel Moya
  11. Interesting how there is no long man in the bullpen. Understand that Hughes is penciled in to come off the DL and start on April 11. If he isn't ready, is Duffey the likely choice to come up? So they have delayed their decision of what to do with one of Moya, Kinley or someone else for two weeks. Even if they have an injury, still have that decision to get the 5th starter/long man onto the roster.
  12. I have this feeling that Lance Lynn is going to be a pleasant surprise, for some. Will go so far as make two predictions. One, he will have a better season than that Darvish guy; and two, he will like it here and they will shock everyone this July when the Twins extend him with a contract similar to what he was looking for this past winter. I have always wanted to be a big fan of Gibson. But days like yesterday sure make it hard, don't they? Hopefully, he will be the pitcher he was the last couple months of last year. If not, your analysis is right on as they will have several options to go before the calendar turns to summer. Will this be the year that Berrios becomes a true ACE? I think so!
  13. Ryan LaMarre's role shouldn't be making the team as their 5th outfielder. If he can hit as well as Grossman, with a bit more power, and run and field similar to Granite, shouldn't he be their 4th outfielder? Send Granite down to play every day. Then at some point between now and next winter, decide between Grossman and Granite who you want in the organization next year.
  14. If they didn't plan on keeping him on the opening day roster, I don't understand why they didn't let him go thru waivers and then try to sign him to a minor league contract. Will see what they do in the next 48 hours or so.
  15. Still believe there is a chance both Moya and Kinley make the team. In that case. Taylor Rogers could be on his way to Rochester. As for Granite needing to play every day, not certain. He may be close to what he will ever be...and that is a fourth or fifth outfielder. Maybe LaMarre should have the spot, or maybe someone else who isn't yet in the organization.
  16. I have been thinking there may be a third man in the mix for the last two spots, Taylor Rogers. Although he was somewhat better today, he wasn't as sharp as Moya. Should Moya pitch an inning or two of lights out ball tomorrow, they just might decide to keep him as their second leftie and send Rogers down.
  17. Thanks. The most recent CBA was signed after 2015, right? Would expect that these minimums may have gone up some in that agreement...or maybe not. In any case, this is an area that seems likely to me that teams/union could improve some of these kids salaries. As we know, the 40-man roster guys are the first replacements most teams have. Seems to me they are worth a lot more than $41,400. Hell, 20% of the league minimum would be over $100k!
  18. I doubt the Twins would claim Vargas, if waived. That would require them to place him on the 40-man, which is the reason they lost him. As much as I really like him and think he can/will be a solid hitter, if ever given consistent at bats, I think the Twins interest would be only if he cleared waivers and they could sign him to a minor league contract. Should that happen, I think their interest level would be very high. On a related note, does anyone know if there are minimum salary levels in the minors for players on the 40-man roster?
  19. With Polanco out, Adrianza's ability to be a backup outfielder is nil. Thus, they may want the fifth outfielder...Granite. Is it possible that they go north with 13 pitchers? That would mean they can keep all of the above. Is it also possible the left handed pitcher who will be sent down isn't Moya, rather, Rogers. He has been terrible this spring, although none of us know if he has been working on stuff which may have affected his results. Can't believe that even with Polanco and Santana out, this team still looks sooo much better than any opening day team in a long, long time.
  20. I think what we are hearing is that Aybar will be on this team, filling the 40-man spot that opened when Polanco was suspended. Is that spot now open? Or doesn't it open until the season starts?
  21. Great article, Seth. Thanks! Should be an important summer for him. Will be interesting to see if he can make up for lost time and earn a promotion to Fort Myers late in the year. And yes, Cedar Rapids should again battle for a championship. Add me to those who don't understand why so many have Rosario out of here in a year or two. I look for him to be an important piece of Twins teams well into the future.
  22. Thanks, Seth. I don't know of another player in the entire organization I am more excited about following this year. Well, maybe Thorpe. But I really will be surprised if we don't see Rooker with the Twins by September at the latest.
  23. I will go with his explanation that he wasn't aware that the prohibited drug was in what he was given by his trainer. But this points to a problem the Twins, and all of baseball, is having with players from the D.R. Perhaps the Twins should become more pro-active. Do they have a trainer at their academy in the D.R? I would assume so. If that is the case, perhaps they should suggest to all of their players (Twins and minor leagues) that they work with that trainer only when home in the winter. Can't force them to do it, but perhaps many/most would. Also recommend that they take nothing that hasn't been given them by that trainer, or at least reviewed by said trainer.
  24. The Adrianza I see on the field is not as bad at the plate as you seem to suggest. Give him the job with Escobar filing in a couple times a week...unless he is starting at third.
  25. WOW, what a shock! But in his defense, almost all players have trainers they work with over the winter. Those who live in the D.R. have local trainers. If you have someone like that, you trust them. Was it an error by the trainer or intentional, we will never know. Problem is easily solved, IMO. Move Adrianza into the starting shortstop role with Escobar as the backup, who can also play third base if/when Sano is sidelined for a suspension or injury. If Sano is out for just a short time, you only need another infielder short term. Could start the clock with Gordon or go with one of the other guys who have been in camp (would need to be added to the 40-man). Who knows, Adrianza just may take the opportunity and never look back. And as Carole hinted at above, maybe he did know this could be coming and that was on his mind while playing in the field this spring.
