  1. E-D-D-I-E! And I agree with all who believe we also need to extend Escobar and Berrios. Isn't today's game huge? Win it and we are 3 games out vs. 5. That could be the spark that ignites the team for a run like last year. I am of the opinion that Romero is very talented with a wonderful future. With his stuff, he could turn into a true ACE. But he is also very young and inexperienced. For that reason, I expect when/if Santana gets back in the next 30 days, Romero will be sent back to Rochester. Start him every 6th game to limit his innings, or even move him to the bullpen in late August. Then bring him back in September for spot action or limited bullpen duty during the playoff chase. Obviously, if Santana doesn't return or they trade someone in July, he would need to remain with the Twins.
  2. No need to get concerned about the Motter call up. He can play almost anywhere on the field and is merely keeping a bench spot warm until Polanco returns in a couple weeks. Was trying to figure out what is going on in Fort Myers. They have 7 (actually 8) all-stars and are in last place. Then I too saw that Diaz is an all-star with a sub .600 OPS. The FSL All-star team must be chosen by the voters and Miracle fans were motivated. The player who jumped out at me this morning was Jose Miranda. While dealing with the cold for the first time in his life, he hit only a buck eighty in April. But he has been a hitting machine ever since. And he won't turn 20 until the end of this month. He probably has moved into the top spot of future third base prospects for the Twins. Will he replace Diaz as the #13 prospect in TD mid-season rankings? Or should he be even higher?
  3. Now that was an enjoyable game to watch. Add Gibson to the list of players who will need an extension this winter, along with Rosario and Berrios. Gibson, Romero and Berrios can form the nucleus of a playoff caliber rotation. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised to see them extend Lynn as the veteran part of that group. The other player that needs to be extended, this summer, is the Mighty Mouse. All the other young guys can wait another year...or longer.
  4. Holy Cow, Arraez has a strikeout rate that's lower than Wade the last 28 days! And that Kirilloff guy isn't all that much higher, or Miranda. Maybe the Twins are developing a few guys who won't strike out as much as a few of their current young guys. And thanks for this report, I like it!
  5. Great interview, Seth. And what a fine young man. Expect he is going to have a good life, whether in baseball or doing something else. And let's hope that there is some time in a Twins uniform before doing whatever else he will do with the rest of his life.
  6. Checked the scores when Chattanooga was in the third inning. Saw Thorpe was pitching, so I followed the game the rest of the way. Thorpe was nearly perfect through 5 shutout innings with 2 hits and 8 strikeouts on only 63 pitches. An infield single followed by a double led to a run in the sixth inning. The seventh inning was similar to some of his previous outings. It began with an error on the third baseman before getting out of hand, thus, only 2 of his 4 runs were earned. As he works back to the top of our pitching prospects, we continue to see him dominate early before tiring late in games. Yet, other than his last start, many of his problems late in games have been accompanied by one or more defensive errors. Yes, he needs to be able to pitch around problems, but at 22 he is still young (for AA) and missed two full years of development. This was probably his best start of the year and I am excited to see him getting closer to the prospect I have been excited about since following him all those years ago when he was a 17 year old dominating the Australian Winter League.
  7. Just plain ugly finish. I count three games of the last 8 or 10 we could have, should have won. Come September, three games will count. And what a job by Berrios, who wasn't at his best. I found the comments about Pedro interesting as I have been talking about that comparison for a couple years.
  8. Excellent, and you seem to have a consensus that there should be some limitation. No matter how you decided the innings/pitches question, it is likely he should be shut down at some point later in the season. Considering that Romero is one of their best four pitchers, the bigger question is what to do if the Twins are in the hunt for the playoffs? How do they get him available come October?
  9. If this Rupp guy can hit a little AND play good defense, expect we will see him with the Twins in a couple weeks. Question will be who gets sent down. If it were me, it would be Garver. Maybe some of you stat guys can confirm what my eyes are telling me that his defense isn't very good...especially blocking balls in the dirt. And after getting all excited about Rooker the last month, he has gotten only 2 hits in the last five games. I guess a slump should have been expected, hopefully it will be a short one. I like the progress Baddoo is making, especially being on track for about 15 home runs. Although no longer a prospect, what does Rinn have to do to get a little recognition around here? And I loved the 'inquiring minds' aspect of today's report.
  10. Is management telling us that their opinion of all those guys at AAA isn't as high as ours? Do they believe that none of them will ever be late inning relievers? To win, this year or in the near future, the Twins will need a top shelf closer and a couple of shut down late inning guys. They aren't on this team today. Do any of these guys at AAA have that potential? I would hope so, but really have no way of knowing. Unfortunately, without them having a chance on the big stage...will the Twins ever know?
  11. Thanks for the article. And thanks for answering the question I had as I started reading. That is how the Kernel's were handling having two third basemen,Miranda and Bechtold, on the same team. Any chance one of them gets moved up to Fort Myers?
  12. I think you have the scores flipped for Cedar Rapids, Seth. The Kernels won 3-1. Took a look at the splits for Arraez. June is almost half over and he has 6 walks compared with only 3 strikeouts (38 ab), for a .447 average and .500 OBP. If he keeps this up for another 30 days, does he move up to Chattanooga? And I will second the comments above about Wade. Moves up a level and nothing changes, hits around .300 with an OBP over .400. Trey Cabbage is someone some of us have forgotten about, at least I had. Much like Arraez, he had a terrible April and has been hitting well since. Did any of us expect this type of pitching to start his season for Balazovic? After a couple years in the GCL, could he become a real diamond in the ruff?
  13. Rooker has 9 walks in his last ten games. Even tossing out the 4 walk game, gives him 5 walks in 9 games (42 PA) which is over 11%. Yes, SSS, but encouraging. Had high hopes for Bechtold coming into the season. His bat was as cold as ice for much of this season. He is hitting .313 in his last 10 games with his average sneaking over .200 Sunday. Although the organization may eventually move some of their shortstops to third, they need someone to step up at third over the next couple years and there is still time for Bechtold.
  14. Yes it can be thrown out the window. Why, because he didn't have more than a few days of spring training.
  15. Your comments about Lance Lynn improving his value got me thinking. To move him in July will require their getting an excellent return. He may be one of the better pitchers available to contending teams. But more important, I don't see why they wouldn't be comfortable giving him a qualifying offer to a one year contract at the end of the year. He wasn't acquired mid-season, so I believe they would get a COMP pick if he signed elsewhere. Would that be a first round or second round pick? So any offer would have to be for something better than that in players and or International money.
  16. I have seen people questioning Rooker's walk rate. We can take that one off the list of concerns. And let's talk a bit more about Luis Arraez. 3 for 3 with 2 walks is the player I remember from two years ago. Just checked and saw he is 10 for 22 in his last 7 games with 3 walks and only 2 strikeouts. I don't need California math to know that's over a .500 OBP. Hopefully, he can keep this up for a month or two cause he's BACK! And I guess it was to much to expect that Lewis Thorpe would dominate AA after being promoted a year after missing two full years. And I guess a good game followed by a great game and then a clunker should be expected. Come on Lewis, lets get back on track next time out!
  17. I saw in this morning's paper that picks #2, #4, and #8 have all signed and would be assigned to ETon. That's good news on the signings, albeit I am a bit surprised Jeffers isn't going to Cedar Rapids to replace Rortvedt. Getting Keirsey signed immediately tells me he probably was signed at slot or even below. Like you, I think he was a good pick and might have required a little extra money. And who knows, maybe he got it. The other surprise from this draft was the high number of college seniors. Seems like two out of three guys after pick #20 were seniors. Gotta believe they are going to sign close to 30 of these guys. After watching the Gophers get throttled last night the #1 pick looks like a good pick, although he is probably going to be playing until the last day of the World Series. You indicated they have settled on an amount, but are still gonna have to wait until his name is on the contract before they can commit all of the savings to other players. Do you think he goes to Cedar Rapids with Kirilloff moving up to Fort Myers at the same time?
  18. When Pressly came into a one-run game last night, my stomach tightened and my nerves were shot. Then I watched him pitch breaking ball after breaking ball to two straight batters and the game was over. Not only is he on track to pitching 90 games, whomever is making the decision of what pitches to throw is brain dead. Maybe he should mix in his 97 mph fastball? After last night's demotion, I expect Tyler Duffey is looking at a calendar to see how many days it is until he becomes a free agent and can get out of this circus. Unfortunately, they can't send Pressly and/or Reed out to the minors and I suspect Molitor is begging for a new arm. Bigger question is: Will he use it or abuse it? And yes, that may be the first negative comment I have ever made about our Manager. At least the first I remember. The wild card isn't an option so the only way into the playoffs is to win the division. After every loss of a winnable game (2 this week), that task is getting harder and harder. Maybe Polanco's return will be the shot in the arm they need to get on a streak. He is back in what, three weeks? And yes, Tom, Lance Lynn is certainly improving his value to someone else come July.
  19. Forgot to mention above how great it was seeing Griffin Jax make a quality start at Fort Myers. I really think this kid is gonna be a good one who may be on a fast track next year.
  20. Thanks for the update on Rortvedt, Seth. Will be exciting if he can keep hitting well in Hi-A. With all the catchers they just drafted, expect one may be on his way to Cedar Rapids. And thanks for adding the DSL Twins to this report. Considering how many of our top pitchers are and will be coming from the islands, this is great information. A few more nights like this for Rooker and the Twins are gonna have to think about where he should be. Rochester? Or maybe the Twins by later this summer?
  21. Thanks Tom. And it makes for a much better evening after a game like this. Berrios said he went to sleep last night thinking 'he was going to pitch a complete game.' Said he knew he had to do it. When Marney asked how much he had left in the tank, he said "2 more innings." And the offense got going with a Rosario double and Escobar home run. Then another bomb by Rosario later to put it outta reach. This team needs more hitters helping out if they are going to keep feeling good!
  22. Who is going to give them anything for the Brian Dozier we see on the field today? If Dozier doesn't have a second half like the last two years, he is going to be begging the Twins to resign him for a contract like the one he has now. And as he gets older, there is no guarantee that second half will happen.
  23. Let's not include Buxton in the same category as Sano. Yes, Buxton started slowly. But his problem has been an injury, including some games trying to come back from it when he should have remained on the DL. Yes, Buxton may never be the hitter we all hoped for, but with his speed and defense he can become a very important part of a good team. Maybe they need to work with him next off season to become a small ball type of hitter. The player I think should be included with Sano is Brian Dozier. Usually players in their contract year put up numbers that are off the charts. He seems more like a player who has left town and is uninterested in what happens to this team....at least to me while he is on the field. A lot of defensive mistakes and minimal production at the plate. As for Sano. He is just plain too big to be effective on the field. As I said elsewhere this morning, when Polanco is back I would ship his butt off to Rochester. Maybe that would get his attention that he needs to work to become the best player he can be.
  24. Congrats to Grz. And its fantastic to have Graterol back on the hill in Cedar Rapids. Hopefully, he stays healthy the rest of the year and gets a promotion to Fort Myers by July. I really want to see this kid in a Twins uniform by September, 2019. Berrios, Romero and Graterol has an awfully good sound! And what a nice game for Rooker. If he can start hitting more home runs regularly, maybe he will force the Twins to include him as a September callup.
