  1. Certainly hope the Twins extend both Escobar and Rosario this summer. They are the heart of this team. And let's give Buxton a break. He missed what, two, three weeks and has been back for two games. Very few players would step back into that situation and immediately look good at the plate. And most of those aren't with us anymore!
  2. Navarreto has long been known for his defense. Getting hits in 8 of his last 10 has quietly seen his average move up to .274. If he can hit at that level, he may have a bright future for the Twins. Yes, McKay had a nice night against Cedar Rapids. But what is a college superstar who was drafted #4 doing in low A ball a year after the draft? Haven't followed his career this past year so there may be something I don't know about. But I would be disappointed if I had written him the check he demanded.
  3. Was watching the hockey game with a few brief stops at the Twins. Saw a couple batters in the 1st or 2nd inning where Berrios threw 3 strikes (one at the top of the box, one at the bottom and one on the outside corner) that all showed most of the ball in the strike zone. All three were called balls. Could see his frustration. He had to put the ball over the middle to get a strike and a couple batters latter...boom, 2-0 Angels.
  4. Can you imagine Sid Hartman asking about him in a post game interview? Speak about amazing stories, Sid is still at it at 90 whatever years young!
  5. This young man may be the most pleasant surprise in the organization this year, Seth. And at a position of real need for the organization. His performance this spring is almost too good to be true. Can it continue? I guess we will have to stay tuned to find out. If he does, is a summer promotion to Chattanooga too much to wish for? Thanks for a great article on this new Twin, Seth.
  6. Not basing my opinion of Stewart based on his last start. I have been more than disappointed in his performances for over a year, maybe going on two.
  7. Thanks Steve. Great seeing this kid back on the field and doing so well. Can't wait for Javier to join them, hopefully soon.
  8. I don't think my expectations are perverted at all. I expect a lot more from a #4 overall pick than we have gotten from Stewart. And it seems the Twins agree. After all, they didn't add him to their 40-man roster last fall. Seems to me its about time Mr. Stewart starts giving the Twins a return on that big check he accepted back when he was drafted. When he starts doing that, he will have gotten me back on board his fan club. And the rest of baseball agreed with the Twins as he passed through the Rule 5 draft.
  9. Don't know what to think about Stewart. Six K's in a technical quality start is a good sign. But 10 hits in six innings sure doesn't sound good. He lost me as a fan some time ago. Outings like this won't bring me back. And Grzelakowski's bat continues to be hot. Three hits, including a pair of doubles, has to get our attention. I think Seth may have something coming about him, but was wondering if anyone knows anything about his defense behind the plate? Although he is hitting only a buck eighty something, Arraez got another hit last night giving him hits in 9 of his last 11 games.
  10. Dairy farmers had a saying back when, Seth. And that was that "the cream always rises to the top." Sure is true with this group with those Top 5 doing better than any of us could have expected. A bit concerning that you have already restricted Graterol's ceiling...to #2. [if I knew how, would insert one of those smiley faces here] To be honest, have forgotten about Jorge. With all the starters lined up ahead of him, doubt we will ever see Jorge in a Twins uniform again. When healthy, he joins several others to form a group who are going to provide trading capital for Falvine. Hopefully, they will take advantage of the opportunity to move several for prospects a year or two behind them.
  11. It seems that there is something positive from every start Lewis Thorpe makes. Last night, 70 strikes out of 100 pitches while coming within two outs of a quality start. Important steps at AA, even though they often seem to be baby steps. I know Lachlan Wells has been following the footsteps of Thorpe, but couldn't he have skipped Tommy John? Great seeing Arraez with two hits, Seth. Checked to see that he has hits in 8 of his last 10 games. After a slow start following his year off, he is beginning to look like the hitter he was before the knee injury. And that could be GREAT NEWS for the Twins!
  12. Not concerned that he has only three pitches because his fastball is at least two different pitches the way he moves it. Needs some work on his change, hopefully getting it a couple mph slower. Romero and Berrios or Berrios and Romero? Damn, this is exciting. And like Doc Bauer, I have been thinking about his innings during both of his starts. What might work well when Trevor May is ready to join the Twins in July, move him to the bullpen. Limiting him to a couple innings every five days would cut the # of innings from say 30 (5*6) to 10. Then get him back into his regular starting spot in September so he is available for game #1 or game #2 in the playoffs. This plan would solve two problems, keeping Romero available for the playoffs AND creating a spot for Trevor May when he is available. Now, how do we find a spot for Santana next month?
  13. Thanks for a great read, Steve. Didn't know much about this kid. May need to begin following more closely.
  14. Nice start for Gonsalves. Lets hope he can back this up with another dozen starts over the next couple months. That should give him the experience and track record the Twins want to see. Should then be ready to move up, if and when the Twins have a need. If that need doesn't arise, probably won't see him in a Twins uniform until September. Also, great seeing Rooker back on the field. Was curious what actually happened in Chattanooga. Did the runner on second advance to third with the guy on third not going home? Or was he out at third before the runner scoring crossed the plate?
  15. Great seeing Rortvedt have a big game with his bat after a bit of a slump. This kid can't move up fast enough with the Twins current lack of catching depth at all the higher levels. Speaking of catchers. Does anyone know more about Grzelakowski? Did he play some independent ball out of college before signing with the Twins? And lets not assume that either Berrios or Romero don't have what it takes to become a #1 or even a true Ace. No one knows what their ceilings are, but they sure have a lot of talent.
  16. No, you are not. But I do expect part of the deal the Air Force worked out with him is that if the Twins pay his housing, travel, etc., the Air Force won't be paying his housing allowance. More important, however, is that this is FANTASTIC news for both Jax and the Twins. He has a lot of talent which can now begin being developed. Don't know where he will start his season, but expect he will end it back in Florida with the Miracle.
  17. Berrios-Romero-Graterol. That could be a trio of starters, all with ACE or #1 talent, that will lead the Twins to the World Series three or four years from now. All will be home grown and in the organization before the changes in the front office. Hmmmm? Not saying that new blood wasn't needed or that the new guys aren't doing a lot of exciting things. Just thinking that the old guys did a lot more good than often given credit for. Of the three, one draft pick and two International signees. I don't remember how big their bonuses were, do you Seth? But I don't recall that either Romero or Graterol were big $$$ guys...i.e., more than a million. And there are lots of candidates for the #4 and #5 spots in the rotation. Only hope I am still around to enjoy this!
  18. Curious, Seth, why Joe Cronin isn't in your Top 5? Each segment of his triple slash is better than any of the top 5. The only negative I can see is that all three of the honorable mention Miracle players had less at bats than your Top 5. But someone with a 1.009 OPS had one hell of a month. Also am a bit surprised that two of the top five and three honorable mention all play in Fort Myers. Would expect they would have a better record with that much fire power.
  19. Does anyone know the health status of Wander Javier? Sure looks like his moving up to Cedar Rapids would be a good time for Lewis to move up to Fort Myers. Spending half the year in Hi-A this year could put Lewis on track to join the Twins late next year, shortly after his 20th birthday! Great to see Kirilloff driving in more than a run a game. What a great start for a kid who missed all of last year. For that reason I could see his spending more time in Cedar Rapids, perhaps the entire year.
  20. I'll second the comments about Thorpe, Seth. Especially the fact that he had given up only one walk in his previous four starts. Five walks and two hits means he probably faced 19 batters. With six K's and five walks, that means 11 of the 19 didn't put the ball in play. That seems unusually high, so might have something to do with the Mobile lineup. Maybe they were fouling off a lot of balls to drive up the pitch count. Still waiting for Thorpe to take that next step and begin dominating. But we all know the move up to AA may be the biggest step prospects face. He is still very young without a lot of experience after missing two years. Although he has struggled a bit, I find his start to AA very encouraging. But then I would as I have loved this kid since his performance in winter ball down under when he was 17 or 18 years old.
  21. Not certain how much of the contract is covered by insurance, but would think some. Also don't know if the Twins could collect as he is healthy enough to pitch, just not at the level he was pitching when the policy was purchased. Expect there is some negotiating to be done between the Twins/doctors and their insurance carrier. As for his future, unless he can be something different coming out of the pen, I see him retiring sometime between now and the end of the year.
  22. I would probably have given the pitcher of the day nod to Gonsalves. 7.2 innings of shutout, one hit ball at AAA seems better to me than either of the guys individually at Cedar Rapids. And to me the award is pitcher of the day, not pitchers of the day. So he would be my selection. I think we all need to remember something about Lynn as he struggles early this year. Not only did he miss most of spring training, he hasn't been able to settle into any routine in April due to all the cancellations. If he hasn't improved by the end of May, then do something.
  23. I have believed for some time that Escobar may be the most important Twin to get extended over the summer. He is a starter. Just never certain where on the diamond he will be playing. Plus, I understand he is a special guy to have in the locker room!
  24. That takes them down to about $3.5mm, Seth. Unless there are a lot of other big spenders with less money or the Twins find a good chunk in a trade, expect the kid talked about above is not in the cards. They may still be very active, but may be looking at a good number of prospects in the $200,000-$600,000 range.
