  1. Interesting. Regarding Rosario, I was curious how his 40% rate in 2017 compared with 2016? With 2015? Considering he had a great year at the plate in terms of all the traditional numbers, we have to accept he is who he is. Personally, I'll take it!
  2. Great article Ted. And even better that front offices are beginning to manage teams like a business. Way too many contracts thrown around to players who don't perform well for significant parts of long-term deals.
  3. I expect that the front office is also looking hard at 2019. Right now they have 7 potential starters who could be under contract. That includes Berrios, Gibson, Mejia, Pineda, May, Hughes and Santana. Of that group, Santana is a team option with a potential vesting clause that would guarantee it. Could that group lead the Twins to a World Series? Berrios is a potential #1 starter or even an ACE. Will Santana continue pitching like 2017? Did Gibson finally turn the corner? Will May and Pineda return to top form following TJ surgery? Lots of question with most needing to pan out to play deep into October. But this group doesn't include any of Gonsalves, Jorge or Romero. Won't all of us be disappointed if at least one of that trio doesn't earn a spot in the 2019 starting rotation? Looking at 2019, it seems to support Nick's position that it may make sense to go all in on a reclamation project on a one year contract in 2018. The only alternative would be if they can sign a #1 starter long-term. And the only guy out there who fits that bill would be Darvish. And in his case, you can't go over 4 or 5 years max.
  4. Yes, let's get one signed and get ready for some baseball.
  5. Is it possible we are seeing the beginning of bringing baseball compensation back to reality? Is it possible that ten years from now contracts will be smaller, risky contracts to older players will be shorter and overall payrolls will be down? Perhaps on the flip side, ticket prices will be held constant or even edge down and the fan will be able to take his family to a game for a bit less of a hit to his budget? Was talking about baseball salaries the other day to a family of doctors. A surgeon has lives in his hand every day, yet many make what is the minimum for baseball. Others make more, but few make what a player makes in their first year of arbitration. Is a change coming?
  6. Had we put Burdi on the 40-man roster, he would have had options to be sent down rather than needing to be put on the 25-man roster. But then most of us like our prospects better than those from other organizations. It is unlikely they will have a spot for him on opening day. Perhaps they will be able to make a trade and send him down. Maybe move someone who would be a Rule 5 risk come December.
  7. This type of signing makes a lot of sense. In part because neither Hughes or May will be available on opening day. Hell, neither may be available until mid-season if then. Add the possibility that Mejia doesn't merit a starting spot on opening day or ever in 2018, and you could easily need two starters when the season opens.
  8. One pitcher who could have been considered is Ryan Eades. That is unless he is gone and I missed it. Somewhat similar to Baxendale with maybe a bit more upside. I always include Thorpe with Romero and Gonsalves as the pitchers at AA or above with the highest upside. Understand that Thorpe made only one start at AA last year and probably is a real long shot to be ready this year. But based on talent and the fact he will be at AA in 2018, he could be the surprise that makes his debut late in the year.
  9. I should have clarified my comment. I meant that Rochester's bullpen may have more upside, guys with higher ceilings, than the big league bullpen.
  10. Is great having depth in the bullpen. The bigger question, however, is whether Rochester's bullpen will be better than the Twins?
  11. The team and player/agent both submit their number to the league without knowing what the other is offering, correct? Have you ever heard of a situation, Seth, where the player's request was less than the team's offer? If so, do you know what the result was?
  12. You just made a great case for why it makes sense to trade Sano as soon as trading him makes sense. Unfortunately, with the injury and his off field problem it is going to be July at the earliest that the Twins may be able to get fair value.
  13. I read somewhere a few weeks ago that the Twins weren't going to be extending anyone this winter. Rather, they were waiting until spring training to do so. Put me in the extend him this year camp, with at least a couple extra years beyond arbitration.
  14. Although a two year contract may be possible, I see him and the Twins at the point of doing one year contracts moving forward. I agree that $10mm may be a bit high, but for 2019 I see $5mm as too low. Expect something more in the $7mm-$8mm range. How long does he last? I think its realistic to see him play two or maybe even three years beyond 2018.
  15. Blyleven and his curve ball made his debut as an 18 year old. OK, that was a different time. But is it unreasonable to believe that Enlow could rocket thru the system next year all the way to AA. He could then begin 2019 in AA before moving up to AAA and the Twins in August, 2019. I can dream, can't I?
  16. I began following Thorpe when he was pitching winter ball back home in Australia. I think it was the winter of 2013, but could have been the following year. He was one of the top two pitchers in the league, facing teams with a mix of single A players to a few who had a cup of coffee. His numbers were obscene. Will continue following him this year with the expectation that he moves up to Rochester late in the year. Expect the reason he won't get a September call up is that he will be out of innings after not pitching in 2015-2016. The other player I want to see fly like an eagle thru the system is Enlow. Can't win without top level pitching. The only way we are going to get a deep rotation is thru the draft and development. Would you like to be a Twins scout in Louisiana? Enlow, Bechtold and Pearson all turned pro rather than honor their commitment to LSU last year. Expect there is a bounty on Twins scouts in Baton Rouge.
  17. And you may have missed the best prospect of the entire group, Lewis Thorpe, although he probably won't make it to the Twin Cities until sometime in 2019.
  18. Count me amongst those who don't think as highly of Gordon. My other concern is with Mejia. The defensive part of his game is a liability. He has a real problem covering first base. He is a big man and appears to lack the conditioning needed to do what a pitcher must do defensively. Add that to his inability to pitch beyond the 5th inning and I see a pitcher who I doubt will be in the major leagues very long. Hopefully, both improve and prove me wrong.
  19. I don't understand people talking about a rebuild. Five of our eight every day starters are young, very young. The core of a team is in place for a long time. Yes, we need to add some parts around it, but starting a rebuild just doesn't make sense.
  20. Am I the only one, or are others also real uneasy with giving Darvish lots of years and dollars? I probably shouldn't form an opinion based on a couple games in the World Series, but he really was awful. Hopefully, there was something ailing him and they know why he wasn't at least competitive. I would prefer they go with someone like Cobb or Lynn, who I view as Plan B candidates.
  21. My question, Nick, is what happened to Duffey's curve? I recall watching him pitch when he was first called up. It appeared he had two different curves, the 12-to-6 and another at a different angle. He could throw either for a strike or have it drop off a ledge. I didn't see that curve last year. If he can get that pitch back together with a better fast ball, he can be a top pitcher...long relief, set-up, closer or starter. Do you agree that he lost the effectiveness of his curve? Or is my memory of 2016 failing me?
  22. Personally, John, I value this site strictly because of the Twins. I have zero interest in reading about the Vikings, Wild or Timberwolves. In part because I have little interest in a couple of those sports and well, I am a Packers fan. I would be interested in doing some regular writing during the season. Because my interest is the minor leagues, my problem would be making it different than what Seth and others are already doing. I expect you still have my email address. Why don't you email me so we could discuss it.
  23. Baseball without Twins Daily wouldn't be the same. Especially for those of us who are most interested in what's happening down on the farm. Good luck in making whatever changes are needed. And a belated Merry Christmas to all!
  24. I still don't understand last year. If Haley was the guy they wanted, why not draft him with their #1 pick? Why go thru taking someone else and then the trade.
