Article: Twins Pitching For More Pitching
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
How long before Lynn tells his agent to call the Twins back? Their $20mm for two years was a starting point. Expect that his agent could negotiate that up a few million. What kind of position is a starting pitcher in if he misses all/most of spring training? I will be shocked if there isn't movement during the next week. And the 40-man spot is easy if the Twins sign one of these guys...release Sanchez.- 39 replies

Article: 2018 Minnesota Twins Roster Projection (2.0)
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The only way I see Aybar on the opening day roster is if Sano is suspended for a lot longer than 10 days AND they want two utility players. Otherwise, Adrianza clearly is a better option as #2 utility player. Expect to see Busenitz start the year in Rochester along with Curtiss, Reed and Moya. Also think that Kinley will begin the season there after the Twins trade Vargas to the Marlins for him (does Kinley have to clear waivers prior to doing a trade?). Not certain where Duffey fits in all this. Does he have options? Still see Hughes as the #4 starter on opening day, sliding to #5 when Erv is back. That puts Mejia into the Rochester rotation with Slegers, Gonsalves and Romero. Gonna be one fine pitching staff for the Red Wings this spring. Assuming Sanchez is released and Vargas is traded, that opens two 40-man spots. Could they shock the you know what out of us and sign a starter sometime during the next week or two? Is one of those big three about ready to accept a short-term deal? After all, ten million bucks beats the hell out of sitting on the couch and watching games next month. At least it would to me.- 37 replies

Article: Twins 2018 Position Analysis: First Base
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks Nick. Some time this November, I see Mauer going out to dinner with his agent, Molitor, Falvey, Levine, St. Peter and maybe even Mr. Pohlad. The conversation will start with Joe telling everyone how he feels and what he would like to do in 2019. Assuming he has a good 2018 and he feels good, he will let them know he'd like to play ball for another year. His agent and Levine, who are sitting next to each other will each toss out a number. Someone will say, how bout splitting the difference. All sides will agree and Joe will sign on for another year at a salary of $10mm +/- a million or two. Fast forward to November, 2019, and there will be the same dinner. Results and discussion may be different, but all will order a nice big steak at the Capitol Grille that will be paid for by Mr. Pohlad!- 20 replies

Article: The Difficult Dozier Decision
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Should be interesting. Is Dozier our best option at second base in 2019? Probably. Is Dozier the best option at second for the Twins in 2020? Maybe, maybe not. Is Dozier the best option at second for the Twins in 2021, most likely not. Expect the Twins will have a cordial conversation with Dozier and his agent at the end of the year. Dozier will likely test the waters before making his decision. Should the market dictate that a two or three year deal with the Twins at prices less than he would have liked make sense, he could return. I know I like him in a Twins uniform and would like seeing him at Target Field for a few more years. -
Article: Report From The Fort: Gibson's Arbitration
rdehring replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My thoughts exactly, John. That being that the Twins went thru this for experience. What I found interesting in your article was the comment about the league's role. When was it that the Commissioner was a neutral party in the game. He had a role as the arbitrator between the two sides, acting in the best interest of the game. I think it was that way a long time ago. Do you know when it changed? -
Article: An Offense Poised To Do Damage
rdehring replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Me thinks your Misc players getting 5 dingers is low, twinssporto. Expect Garver will get that many or more himself. But more by Garver could reduce the number from Castro. If you are setting 232 as the bar for an over/under, I will take the under! My reason is that I suspect we will get only about 12-15 from Sano. Expect there will be a short suspension sometime early in the season, then he will be gone at the trading deadline as part of a whopper trade. We will get a frontline pitcher and a couple top prospects in return for Sano, Gibson and/or Mejia (or another good prospect).- 10 replies

Article: What's Next For Kennys Vargas?
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I expect Kennys is gone. Only question remaining is how and when. Unfortunately, he never got consistent playing time to confirm that he is a good hitter. David Ortiz, unlikely. But I expect we are going to see him playing elsewhere and doing well. My question is will he hit better than Morrison in 2018? Will see come September, but possible. Fortunately, Rooker is only a year or so away and will likely mean we won't miss Kennys. Unfortunately, the Morrison signing probably kills getting anything of significance in return.- 65 replies

Article: 2018 Minnesota Twins Roster Projections (1.0)
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Everyone has an insurance policy on their car and home, a policy from company X (no, this isn't a State Farm advertisement). It is possible company X has re-insured their losses to some extent with company Y. I look at Aybar as being the Twins re-insurance policy. Should Sano begin the year suspended or on the DL because his leg still isn't 100%, Escobar will be starting at third. Their insurance, should that happen, is to have Adrianza as their utility player and Gordon available at AAA. Should something also happen to Adrianza, or Gordon prove this spring that he isn't ready for the show, they signed Aybar to a minor league deal. Kind of like re-insurance, something you have but never expect to use!- 75 replies

Article: Brian Dozier: I'll Be A Free Agent
rdehring replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It will be exciting watching Dozier play in Minnesota thru at least July. If he is here all year...great. If he is here for the next three or four years as well, fantastic. Just don't want to break the bank to keep him here. Would rather do that for a Buxton long-term extension. Last winter the FO stated that they wouldn't be doing any extensions until spring training. Well, that time is here. Would be great to see them do something about Buxton, Rosario and yes, Dozier too. -

Change Hughes from pencil to ink, Seth. Will be interesting to see how they deal with Vargas. Will they get much of anything in return if/when traded? And who will be the better hitter in 2018, Morrison or Vargas? Results come September could surprise us.- 75 replies

Article: Report From The Fort: Mound Visits
rdehring replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
100% confidence, John, That Hughes will be much closer to the pitcher we knew in 2014 than the past few years. He's a character guy and I expect he feels an obligation to the Twins to give them something in return for the checks he's been cashing. No question in my mind that he will be one of our top 3 pitchers, which may make this staff surprisingly good! -
Article: On Rushing Pitchers And Taking Lumps
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If the Twins are in contention, and IF their starting five is doing good to ok, then there is no need to rush any of these guys. Let them pitch out their season in AAA. Then add them in September when they can get some innings along with their first feel of the big leagues...all during a pennant chase. Hopefully, we won't need them any sooner.- 52 replies

Article: Lance Lynn to the Twins?
rdehring replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think it is Mr. Hughes wanting to give the Twins something in return for the checks he has been cashing. Remember, he is the guy who turned down the opportunity to come in for a inning or two of relief the last weekend of the season which would have earned him a nice incentive. Based on that event, the guy has character which will drive him to perform for his employer.- 110 replies

Article: Lance Lynn to the Twins?
rdehring replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Where does Hughes fit into this rotation? Everything I have read says he feels 100% healthy and is on a normal spring schedule. The last time we heard that was what, 2014? Sure, he is going to have to show us he is back, but there is no reason to think it isn't possible. And if he is close to 2014, this rotation could be very good...with or without Lynn/Cobb/etc!- 110 replies

Article: Sano Going To Let It Eat
rdehring replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I really hope you are right and that he does hit 30 HR this season. With his off field issue behind him and that type of production, maybe we can then trade him for a top pitcher. I think the point of your article is right on. And the best value the Twins can get from Sano unfortunately may be what they can get in return. When to pull the trigger and how to maximize that return should be foremost on their agenda. -
The front office will be real enlightened should the guys that take the mound improve from their performances of last year. Will Berrios take that next step and be close to becoming a real ACE? Will Santana return close to what he was last year? Will Hughes be healthy, in which case he could be the pitcher he was in 2014...after all it is an even year? Were Odorizzi's problems last year all injury related? Can Mejia take another step in his second season? And will Gibson finally be the pitcher he was in August/September? There is a good chance some, or even most, of those questions will have positive answers. That being the case, I am going out on a limb and picking Phil Hughes for opening day. He will be followed by Berrios, Odorizzi, Gibson and the winner of the battle between Mejia and Sanchez. Should Sanchez lose that battle, I expect he will be either released or traded if he has a decent spring. If there aren't any injuries by the time Santana returns, Mejia is the logical candidate to go down to Rochester.

Fantastic. Have to wonder if TB preferred Palacios over Gordon? Not that far from the big leagues and could turn into one hell of a player. Got a question, Seth. Who do you prefer, a healthy Arraez or Palacios? Both great young hitters, is Palacios better defensively and more likely to stick at short? Sure makes one feel good that they got a good starting pitcher without giving up Kepler, Romero and Gonsalves. Yahooooooo!

Throwing 90+ is nice, but not mandatory to be successful. Especially as a left hander. Was talking to an old lefty 10-15 years ago. When someone else asked about throwing hard, he pointed out he never got close to 90. But if you hit your spots, every time with every pitch, you can be very successful. Although it was a different time, he was more successful than any lefty ever...if you go by the number of major league wins! Gonsalves throws low to mid-90's. Plenty hard if he can put all three of his best pitches where he wants em,

Agree that he is a different type of pitcher than Liriano. Doesn't mean he couldn't take another step forward and be as effective. The Twins have done so much right the past couple years with one of the most exciting lineups in baseball. Now we need to have a bit of luck with a couple pitchers stepping up big time. And what's all this talk of not having a true ACE. I believe that Berrios will become that. And I expect you all will also believe it this time next year!
