  1. Right on article Nick, thanks. I am of the opinion that the right course for the Twins is: 1) Get Sano 100% healthy; 2) give him time to be as productive as he can...hopefully better than the 1st half this year; and then, 3) Trade him for a BIG return, including one top young starting pitcher (not a prospect, rather someone with a year or two in the major leagues). In addition to the concerns you stated above, I am concerned with what his conditioning will be like as he ages and his contracts get bigger and longer. I am also concerned with his desire to spend more time in one of the more glamorous market. Finally, I am concerned with the amount he will demand and IF that fits with what the Twins can pay when you also consider all the other contracts they will need to extend for the rest of the team. Don't know when the right time will be to pull the trigger, just know it isn't now. Will it be this July? Or maybe next winter? Will it come before or after you do that first extension?
  2. When I responded above, Seth, I was thinking more of the guys like your second tier of players when you did your Rule 5 article. Expect the time to have moved them would have been July. Perhaps we will see more moves in the future now that the new young management has settled in.
  3. Like you Rosterman, I always wonder why we don't see some of these guys moved before we lose them in either the Rule 5 or ML free agency. Perhaps someone knows, but I am guessing there isn't much of a market for these type of trades. Wouldn't help to get somebody's player back who is in the same situation. Anyone have any insight into this problem?
  4. Two pitchers who barring injury will have solid major league careers, plus three young infielders with good upside makes for a bright #16-#20. Doubt there are any future stars in this group, although any of them could surprise us.
  5. Has he ever played regularly for an extended period of time? Even 3/4 of the games for more than a week or two? Until he does, we really won't know what he can do.
  6. My position is that Vargas should be penciled in as the Twins full-time DH while also serving as Maruer's backup at first base. Let's see him get a year with 550-600 PA. If he does, I believe he will perform at a level that the Twins will want him doing that for the next decade. As for Sano possibly needing to be the DH, worry about that when/if it happens.
  7. If there are 30 players better than this group, the Twins organization is good...really good. Would love to see the Twins move a couple players in the next week so they don't lose several players in the Rule 5 draft. Unfortunately, most teams are facing the same problem and those type of moves probably won't happen.
  8. Thanks, Seth, this is always interesting. I have a concern over Mejia. I don't like his lack of mobility, nor how he seems to not be able to go past 4+ or 5 innings. Will he end up a long reliever? Or maybe more of a AAAA guy? Anyway, I am not comfortable with him even penciled into the starting rotation, although I expect I am in a minority. Also, assume all the 2017 salary values are meant to be 2018...time does fly, doesn't it?
  9. Have a question about Diaz, Seth. Does he have to be added this year? MiLB shows him as signing with the Twins on November 21, 2013...two days after his 17th birthday. The rule of thumb I use is that players under 18 have 5 years before they are Rule 5 eligible. For him, that would be 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. Per you rule 1 above, you say signed in 2013 (during the minor league season). If MiLB has his signing date correct, he was not signed until after the season...kind of like the Sano situation a few years ago. Have you checked with the Twins on him? If he isn't eligible, that could also give you room to move the player I would hate to lose the most, Lewis Thorpe, into your 'lock' category.
  10. Vasquez and Morani have too much talent to be 49 and 50, Seth. And by sending him to the AFL, Vasquez is awfully close to becoming a Twin. I don't see how the Twins will have room to add Bard to the 40-man. Not only are there several relievers ahead of him, I count seven starters who should be added (won't be room for all seven). If he isn't added, is it likely he is taken by someone in the Rule 5? By the way, what is Chargois' injury status?
  11. The Twins have an ACE coming, they just have to wait until Lewis Thorpe gets here!
  12. No problem with such an extension, Seth. But I am of the opinion that of all the players talked about, Sano should be at the top of the list to be traded. Perhaps, such an extension would help by giving the buyer a longer term return. Not certain to the timing, although I doubt it should be this winter. Perhaps next July, but probably next winter. My biggest concern is related to his role in the 'chemistry' of the Rosario/Sano/Berrios/Polanco/Buxton/Kepler/Vargas group on the team. If he is that critical leader, my interest in trading him goes down. I believe the Twins are going to have to trade someone to get that young starter every bit as good, or better, than Berrios. Not another prospect, but someone who has one or two very good years under their belt. Toss in another prospect (coming to us) and I would pull the trigger to put the rotation at a championship level. (I am assuming at least one of the guys at AA last year is going to make it big) Why Sano? Too many questions, weight, defensive (he has done better than most of us expected) uncertainties amongst others. Also, he has the potential to be great and should bring the return we need. Could probably get that from he and Buxton and Buxton should not be traded, period! Does he become another Cabrera? Maybe, but not certain I care if we get the right starting pitcher that makes us a contender for the next ten years.
  13. Hate it! Expansion to 32 is ok, but why not keep the structure we have had?
  14. Great article John, Thanks. What a year to be a Twins fan. The best for me is watching the outfielders do their thing after a win. A great display of what this team is all about!
  15. Will Santana have a short start today, Seth? Maybe 5 innings, 60-70 pitches as he prepares for Tuesday?
  16. CAN YOU SMELL IT? For the Twins not to make the playoffs, they will have to go 100% into the tank. With the young kids experienced winners from the minors AND 5 remaining against Detroit, that isn't likely. And after dropping three to the Yankees this week, the Twins have them right where they want them....over confident!
  17. I like this and agree that putting Mejia into the Magnificent 7 is premature. Personally, I would like the 7th to be a late inning reliever. Some guy with a bit of a wild look that comes into the game with loud music playing "wild thing." Maybe we wait for Curtiss or Burdi to take that last step and become that shut-down closer.
  18. Yup! It was a long time ago and I only saw him a game or two a year (there wasn't tv back then), but Rosario reminds me so much of him when he was a young player. Much different personality, as Hank was soft spoken and very reserved.
  19. You may recall, Seth, that several years ago I spoke of the similarities between Rosario and a player I watched as a kid. Similar size, both played some second base before settling in the outfield, both with reasonable speed, and both with very quick, special hands. Now I don't predict that Rosario will become the greatest home run hitter of all-time, but the similarities told me a long time ago he may well become a special player.
  20. As you will recall, I have always been a believer of Rosario becoming one of the Twins top players. Have been pleasantly surprised at how much progress he has made this year at the plate. I don't know how defensive metrics are calculated, but I see a player who is above average. Yes, he makes a dumb decision once in awhile, throwing to the wrong base or a bit wild. But he gets to so many balls many outfielders wouldn't, holding runners to one less base. I said to Bonnie earlier this year that I see a lot of Rod Carew in Polanco. Although it is unlikely he, or anyone, will become as good as one of the games all-time best. But he does a lot of the things well that Carew did and I see him as being a long-term asset for this team. Not convinced about Mejia. Would like to see him shed a few pounds and improve his fielding. Don't like his not getting to first base to take a throw when needed...which happened too often.
  21. Thanks John, always enjoy reading how you look at things. And this was an excellent presentation of why the Twins have an excellent chance of playing at least one extra game. Expect that will happen unless the Twins go on a serious losing streak OR someone else goes on that winning streak. And last night made it even better (Twins) or tougher for the others, especially after the Angels fell another game back.
  22. With all these guys plus the trio that pitched a lot for the Twins this year and the injured guys (Burdi and Chargois), I think it is likely the Twins do not need to go out and get more than maybe one good reliever over the winter. What will be interesting is how many are lost in the Rule 5, if any!
  23. I would go along with Seth and have Sammons in the Top 5! If one of Graterol, Enlow and Moran reaches his ceiling, the Twins are gonna have one nice pitcher.
  24. Two championships in the books and a chance for three. Great year down on the farm. When was the last time the system had two champs?
