That takes them down to about $3.5mm, Seth. Unless there are a lot of other big spenders with less money or the Twins find a good chunk in a trade, expect the kid talked about above is not in the cards. They may still be very active, but may be looking at a good number of prospects in the $200,000-$600,000 range.

Looking at the box score doesn't tell how Thorpe's night went. The inning he gave up four runs, all were unearned. Had a lead off infield single, followed by an error. Can't tell, but it looks like it was a double play ball that got no outs. Next guy gets a groundball single to right and the bases are loaded. He then struck out two before the roof fell in. OK, he wasn't able to work out of a jam. But none of the first five hitters hit anything hard...so I would call it tough luck. Again had zero walks, which is encouraging for any pitcher looking to be part of the Twins staff in the future.

This is off the subject, well kind of. My nephew was running the Iron Man in Hawaii a few years ago. Part way thru the marathon, he developed a blister under his big toe nail. He's a dentist and does drilling every day, so he stopped and drilled his own toe nail to relieve the pressure so he could finish the race.

Article: Twins Catchers Quietly Struggling
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I believe Rortvedt is the Twins catcher of the future. The question is when will that future begin? If he moves up to Fort Myers by early summer, I could see him getting his first action as early as September, 2019. But it is more likely he will join the Twins sometime in 2020 and not be in the discussion as the potential starter until 2021 at the earliest. Castro/Garver will be back in 2019. But it looks like they will need Garver to be the starter in 2020 with a veteran brought in to back him up until Rortvedt is ready later in the year. Barring injuries, Rortvedt could be their starting catcher for the rest of the decade ('20's).- 23 replies

Blankenhorn is having an interesting start to the season. Could he become a Dozier like second baseman a couple years from now? Don't know about his defense, but certainly looks like he could be a 20+ home run guy. Looking forward to Thorpe's start tonight. See if he can take another step with a quality start.

Great seeing Jay back on the mound. Hopefully he can stay there for the rest of the year so we have a chance of seeing whether or not he is worthy of filling a late inning spot in the Twins bullpen. And for all of those who are disappointed in the start to the season for the Twins or any specific prospects. Lets keep in mind that this season's start has been ridiculous with all the games cancelled. Although I never played the game, I have to believe the gaps in playing must affect the performance of players, some more than others.

Check the score in the write-up for Cedar Rapids, Seth. Have a question about Joe Cronin. I see he played at BC and has New England ties. Is he related to Joe Cronin, the former Red Sox Hall of Famer and ex AL President? Baxendale just keeps pitching well, as he has for the past few years. Does your crystal ball show him making it to the Twins this year? And do you think he could contribute at that level?

Will be interesting to see if Lewis moves up to Fort Myers when Javier goes to Cedar Rapids. Question about Benninghoff, Seth. I recall that he made an appearance or two in the GCL at the end of last season. If that is correct, wouldn't he be on a normal schedule this spring...other than maybe a pitch/innings limit?

Great start for Romero. Really want to see him continue to develop and join the Twins by late summer. Interesting to see Lewis have a day off the day after going 4-4. Isn't related to a move up to Fort Myers, is it? Probably a bit early, but if Javier is ready to come off the DL it could make sense...and yes, I know that would be pushing it this early in the year. Speaking of Javier, does anyone know how his rehab is coming?

Thanks for all that information. I drove past Beloit about 45 minutes before the first game was scheduled to start. It was 51 degrees with a bright sun and not a cloud around. I was certain the would get the double header in. Might have been better for the official report to read "wet grounds" rather than rained out! But maybe they don't do that.

You didn't mention the biggest hit for Chattanooga, Eric. Rooker didn't have multiple hits, but he did hit his first home run of the year. Then 1-for-3 in the nightcap for a very positive day at the plate. Maybe that will be the start of his getting his bat going at AA.

Thought Morrison hit a couple hard balls. Recall one, don't recall the inning, that was a hard line drive to center. Could just as easily been a double as an out. Anyway, hitting a couple hard is a start! And IMO, Berrios is an ACE. Expect most will agree come the end of 2018. Could our entire outfield be on the DL in the next couple days? I assume Buxton's DL stint was back dated to last week Friday. So he should be able to come off after the TB series.

Is this the first time since TD was formed that your pitcher and hitter of the day both had names starting with Z? And I see that Wiel was in left field yesterday. Saw it was DH the other day. Is also playing some first base? Not worried about Rooker. He just needs to switch to one of Wiel's extra bats.

It is great seeing Duffy doing well, especially in long relief. If he can build on this, he could be a key man in the Twins pen later this summer. Come in for anywhere from a couple batters to 3 or so innings. With the move up to AAA, expect to see Romero be a work in process for the first half dozen starts or so. By mid-May, he should be a fine tuned clock!

No where near enough baseball this spring as evidenced by having only three of your top 20 playing on a Sunday. Zander Wiel has always been an interesting prospect, if maybe a bit of a sleeper. Sure looks like he is off to a great start this year. Must say I am a bit surprised seeing him hit in the #3 spot, especially in that lineup. Expect the Vandy product is comfortable playing back in Tennessee.

I see that Tyler Jay is on the DL, again. Any word on what it is and how long he is expected to be out? Twins can't get a break with this guy.

Way to early to know what fall will bring. If he has a healthy season and does relatively well, expect they will sit down and iron out a one or two year deal. Don't see either side wanting to go longer than two. Is Joe going to move his family away from Lake Minnetonka in the summer...no way. He re-signs with the Twins or retires.

Is anyone else as upset as I that minor league baseball has decided to change the rules of the game beginning with the 10th inning. That decision is absolute horse 'you know what,' in my opinion.

And can you believe that I forgot to include Lewis in that group...so its a nice fivesome! And that doesn't include Enlow or a couple guys waiting in the wings in EST...namely, Javier and Graterol.

What a nice foursome at Cedar Rapids, Kiriloff, Bechtold, Rortvedt and Baddoo. Although Baddoo's bat hasn't come to life yet, the other three are ripping the cover off the ball. Will be great if all four can move to Florida later this summer, then on to the Twins by sometime in 2020. Should be our next wave of replacements who won together throughout the minors.

It has to be tough for all of the Rochester pitchers...and those from other northern IL teams. They broke camp in Florida, what 8-10 days ago? And hadn't played an inning until last night for Mejia and Romero. Expect we are gonna see lots of so-so first couple starts for many of these guys. And Romero's outing was still a very good one.
