Article: 2018 MLB Draft Day 2 Thread
rdehring replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
True, True, True and True. Was just wondering with my fingers on the keys. Looking at their #5 round pick, reminds me a lot of the guy they took around here last year, Barnes. Nothing real flashy, but solid. Will see! -
Article: 2018 MLB Draft Day 2 Thread

Will Keirsey be difficult to sign? Coming off the injury, he may feel he could go back to Utah and move up a couple rounds next year? Otherwise like the pick of a guy who has upside, if healthy. -
Don't know if I like this pick, or not. Will let you know in three or four years. But I like Seth's comments, the FO knows a lot more about him than any of us...including all the draft experts. Seeing he is a college kid with a big bat, will be interesting to see where he starts his professional career. Will it be ETon or maybe even Cedar Rapids? That will tell us a little more about him and their opinion of him. I also expect the Twins are going to save some dollars with this pick and their #1 pick. How much remains to be seen. They don't have a third round pick, so whomever they choose to give the dollars to will come later. If I recall, they took several guys later on last year that required more dollars. Expect we will see a few of those drafted today and/or tomorrow.

Never heard of this kid before last night. Doesn't mean much as I hadn't heard of 99% of the players who will be drafted. But as I read about him this morning I began to wonder. Could he turn into a player similar to Michael Cuddyer? Good average with reasonable power. Defensively, not that great, but he got better by putting in a lot of work over the years. Should this be the case, it would turn out to be a great pick!

To be a legitimate World Series contender, a team needs a shut down back end of the bullpen. Bullpens like the Royals a couple years ago, Cleveland last year and maybe the Brewers right now. The Twins don't have that. All of these guys numbers are just plain awesome. In your opinion, Seth, do any of these guys have the potential to be that type of reliever? An Andrew Miller or that wicked Randy Johnson looking guy for the Brewers (Hader ?). Is your memory the same as mine regarding Van Steensel's first stop with the Twins? Remember his dad being very upset and making some comments that he didn't do anything some others had done. But if memory serves, his on field performance was actually good. Or is my memory somewhere out in left field?

Article: 2018 MLB Draft Day 1 Thread
rdehring replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Doesn't look like they are going to be able to make some of the moves they did last year with guys like Enlow. Just don't have the ammunition ($$$) to do it. So that should put them taking who they view as the best player available when making each pick. I could be dis-remembering, but didn't the amount when the penalty kicks in for bonuses after the 10th round go up to $125,000 last year? Let's shock the world and see the Twins draft some 18 year old who turns into baseball's next phenom! Does Manny Machado have any relatives in this draft? -
Way to go Lewis Thorpe. Have been waiting four years for him to get back in the saddle. Now lets make it back-to-back-to-back great starts. And sure seems like Wade is also back on track after missing some time. And I know it ain't about the minor leagues, but how about the weekend Eddie Rosario had. Seems the key is that he is now more selective in which pitches he swings at that are out of the strike zone.

After a slower than slow start, Rooker has his average over .250 and his power has arrived. Baddoo has been on fire the last 7 games with his average almost at .250. So exciting seeing these two put their slow starts behind them and start showing us what we all were expecting from them. On a sad note, the most disappointing performance to me this spring has been from Andrew Bechtold. His bat started cold and remains in the freezer. On the other hand, is it time to start listing Kirilloff when he doesn't get at least two hits, rather than when he does? And most exciting today is the anticipation of Lewis Thorpe having another dominant game tonight. Please don't disappoint, please? And what a great headline, Tom. Loved it!

There are lots of baseball decisions I don't like, such as the ridiculous minor league rule for extra innings. But I like the effect the 26th man has had since put on the books (was it last year?). It gives teams a chance to bring up top prospects for one game in 'the show.' And what a benefit for those young prospects to get that first feel of what it is like to pitch on the biggest stage. And there are no hard feelings when sent back down because they knew from the start that is what would likely happen. This is one rule that makes sense and is working....love it!

Great news getting Jax back on the mound on a somewhat full-time basis. A bit surprising that Cedar Rapids is under .500 with a top five hitters of Baddoo, Lewis, Kirilloff, Miranda and Pearson. Kirilloff has to be a leading contender for Player of the Year. Has he had a slump this season? Even two or three games without a hit?

Article: Joe Mauer's Concussion Symptoms Return
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
After a series of concussions, didn't Justin Morneau's career end with a concussion received while diving for a ball while playing first base? This situation is way to similar. I hope for the best for Joe. But even if he comes back for the rest of the year, this may be the pebble that pushes him over the edge when deciding whether or not to retire. -
Article: KC 11, MIN 8: We Can’t Have Nice Things
rdehring replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
With several really good teams in each of the other two divisions, its looking like the Twins only chance of making the playoffs is to win the Central. Fortunately, Cleveland hasn't been a super team. This series will be important, but we won't know anything for certain until they get some of these injured players back. Unfortunately, got a feeling it is going to be awhile before we see either Santana or May. Maybe getting #7 back for the weekend will help them score some runs. And its what, another month before Polanco will be eligible. Hopefully, he will be the spark that ignites the team for a second half drive. -
I like it, thanks! Kiriloff started hot and is getting hotter. What a great return from missing a year. Also really like what Rortvedt and Wiel are doing with their bats. Anxious to see what Severino does when the Eton season starts. Will you be including the DSL Twins in this report after they start play this weekend?
-
Has Vargas noted that the Twins are in need of a couple big bats? Sure has been hitting the last couple weeks like a man in search of a promotion! Gotta believe there is at least three or four guys in that Kernels lineup who will be playing for the Twins a few years from now.

Article: 2018 MLB Draft Top 50 Prospects: 1-10
rdehring replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks for these, Andrew. Wouldn't surprise me if one or two of these dropped and was available to the Twins at #20. But will they take him if he does? Next week should be exciting! -
Could that have been Thorpe's first D-O-M-I-N-A-N-T game? Would like to see another inning and maybe one less walk (1 instead of 2). But 8 strikeouts adds to the pitch count. Expect they aren't pushing him too far beyond 90 pitches after missing all of 2015 and 2016. But that was one good game. Now, lets see him repeat it next time out. And he is pitching at AA as a 22 year old. Thank you Lewis for making my morning a good one! Got a question Steve. When the Twins sell a player for 'cash considerations,' is that cash? Or can it also be International Pool $$$? Or would it be specified as Int'l pool $$$, if that were the case?

Enjoying your time in Cedar Rapids, Seth? A 2-5-3 triple play sure isn't the norm. What a game.. Also wondering if Arraez was injured or what the reason was to replace him early in the game? Don't know a lot about Sawyer who is hitting well in a SSS at AAA. Looked up his history and see that he has been hitting relatively well the last couple years in Hi-A and AA. Toss in Navarreto hitting well at AA and Grz also hitting at Hi-A...maybe the Twins organization isn't as thin behind the plate as we think. Two of them are new to the organization. That seems to prove what new management was talking about when they worked to improve the talent level throughout the organization.

Article: SEA 4, MIN 3: Zuni-Not Again
rdehring replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes, offense is the current problem for this team. But Rosario and Kepler are proving they can and will be the cornerstone of this team for a long time. Getting Mauer back will help as will Polanco, assuming he isn't totally outta whack after not playing for the first half of the season. At least he will be fresh for the drive to the playoffs in August and September. Sano isn't the hitter everyone expected he would be. Won't get into a discussion of why. Can he be someday? Maybe. Right now there are enough questions about him that they can't get what one would hope for in a trade. -
Article: 2018 MLB Draft Top 50 Prospects: 11-20
rdehring replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Expect that at least half of these players from this group of 10 will be available when the Twins draft at #20. Wouldn't be surprised if it is one of those five high school pitchers between #14 and #20. -
Another nice game for Rortvedt. Seems like his bat is coming around. Still a long way off, but gotta believe he can be the Twins starting catcher for a decade. Any word on what is going on with Stewart? Checked the local paper and didn't find anything. Last outing was certainly bad and if that was do to a nagging injury he would have gone on the DL. Could be lots of answers, some not what we would want to hear.

Nice game for Rooker, who now has 6 home runs. Seems like he has begun settling in at AA. And Wiel just keeps hitting really well! Checked the box score for Cedar Rapids, Eric. I think you flipped Enlow's walks (4) and strikeouts (6) in the write up above. Great seeing Enlow have a game like this. And Gonsalves is probably ready for a move up after back-to-back shutout games. But when will a spot open up? Maybe July if they have excess starters and can move one? Or will they have to move two to make room for Gonsalves? If so, who? The Twins may be in position to pick up several nice young prospects in July. Otherwise, probably won't see him until September. But they have to get Gonsalves up some time to confirm that he should be one of their starters next year and beyond. Knowing that will affect what they do with Santana, Gibson and Lynn in the offseason.

Some of us are waiting on a dominant performance from Thorpe...then another and another. But he just can't get that first one behind him. Tonight, his routine was off as he came on in the third inning in relief of Santana. And then there was the Lookouts defense, or lack thereof. A one out error followed by a second error (throwing) one batter later led to 3 runs crossing the plate before Thorpe could get out of the 4th inning. An error on the lead off hitter in the 8th inning led to 2 more unearned runs. Three nice innings between the sloppy 4th and 8th innings should be something to build on as we await his first shut down start.

Luis Arraez is on a 6-game hitting streak, with 2 hits in four of those games. Great to see him getting back to where he was before the injury. Expect May is going to need all 30-days of his rehab assignment.

I hate this crazy rule of putting a runner on second base in extra innings. If there is a concern with the length of games in MiLB, play a couple extra innings and if still tied...book it as a tie. Don't change how the game is played. Graterol is so exciting, but there will be speed bumps along the way to the "show." Hopefully Slegers will get the call for some of these spot 'double header' starts.

Didn't we see some pitcher who had recently converted from starter to the pen at Target Field last night. Man, he was good. Does Anderson have stuff anything like Hader? Next question for Seth and everyone here...who gets to the big leagues first, Lewis or Kirilloff? My vote would be Kirilloff. As for prospects, when does someone move Zander Wiel up into their Top 20? Plus today will be exciting to follow Cedar Rapids with Graterol on the mound. Thanks for the heads up!
