  1. And those Red Wings keep on winning and are now 2 games over .500. Has anyone else noticed how the roster makeup of AAA teams has changed. AAA once was the level for your best prospects. But AAA teams now have a few top prospects mixed in with an assortment of AAAA players and guys they sign from Independent ball to Asia. Most of those players are older and have some major league experience. As a result, most top prospects can be found working their way up the ladder in AA. Great starts by Sammons, Enlow and Canterino (MiLB sp?). A bit surprised to see Canterino pitch as I thought they were going to give him the summer off after his heavy use at Rice U this spring. But sure like the results, even in small doses. And back-to-back very good outings by Moya. Could he make it in time for the playoff run?
  2. Great comments, Doc. Must say I agree with all. And I was one of those few who were less than excited about signing Cruz as I thought at his age a noticeable decline was likely. WRONG! Became less concerned when I saw that the contract was for a year with a team option. Also didn't know much about what he brought to the clubhouse at the time. Like how Gibby is getting better and really see him as a very solid #3. Looking forward to next year, would like to see the Twins extend him before the end of the month (yes, I know they seldom do this). They also need to find someone to slide into that #2 slot. Could be Pineda for the playoffs this year, but doubt he will be back in 2020. Don't know what to think about Stashak. Was effective last night, yet when pitching to the middle of the order during his first inning there were several balls hit very hard. After giving up the home run down in Miami, believe he needs work before becoming one of their top four relievers.
  3. So glad to see you talking about Diaz. Considering, like Urbina, he is a rookie 17 year-old and doing as well as he is, he should be someone we watch over the coming years.
  4. The Red Wings won on opening day, then went on a losing streak. They haven't been over .500 since, until last night. They are 6.5 games back in the Wild Card race and 7.0 games out of first in their division. Do they have time to make the playoffs? Probably not, but should they extend their current winning streak a few more games they just might make it interesting. Don't know what to say about Dobnak, who has been their best pitcher. The way the Twins have been flipping players between Minnesota and up state New York, who knows, he may be with the big team before the end of the month. I see that Wiel is not a free agent until after next year. Does he get added to the 40-man this November? Expect he is on the bubble with several others. And did I read correctly that Duran was perfect thru 5, then gave up 5 runs? Gotta just shake your head on that one. Will second the comments about Breek, and his moving up to ETon.
  5. Will agree with Spicy above regarding Perez. Was hoping that Thorpe would step up and be a potential alternative down the stretch....not. Tough game to watch. I almost flipped over to the Hallmark Channel, but I had already seen that Christmas movie. Have felt for some time that the Twins need a couple hitters to get hot, a couple pitchers to get into that shutdown mode and Buxton to stay healthy. Well, two out of three wouldn't be bad.
  6. Lots of nice pitching performances, Seth, in addition to Sands. Stewart, Rijo, Graterol and Romero all had good days. Love seeing Kirilloff have days like yesterday. Need a half dozen more this last month to get him back into that national Top 10.
  7. I really don't understand why you had to jump into this discussion. I didn't say anything about what you seem intent on arguing about. My point was and is simple....by not trading them yesterday, they are still on the team and provide value in the future. If I understand the point you seem to want to argue about, that there will never be anyone available to trade for, then you are correct, my comment was stupid.
  8. I think you missed my point, Mike. I don't know who will be available, or when. But players will become available. And whenever someone is available, having players A, B and C will put the Twins in a good position to swing a deal. Had they traded players A, B and/or C, they would no longer have that ammunition available.
  9. With the trading deadline now behind them, I expect the FO to begin focusing on starting pitching for 2020. Although extending players during the season has not been something the Twins are known for, I would hope they take a hard look at it this year. Gibson has indicated he would consider an extension several times. Odorizzi also made a statement to that possibility recently. I don't know if I am in left field, but I will be surprised if we don't see them extend one of the three (Gibson, Odorizzi or Pineda) before the season ends. Extend a second during the dead period after the year and they will be fine in 2020. As to they would extend, not even going to guess on that one.
  10. There is some business remaining related to the deadline. With Dyson joining the team today, who gets sent to the minors? After last night, expect it will be Poppen. But then who goes next when Cron comes off the IL in a few days? Will it be Stashak or Thorpe? My guess is Stashak as Thorpe is the only pitcher in the pen who is able to go more than an inning or two at the most. I could see Thorpe getting lots of opportunities to go 4-5 innings paired with both Pineda and Perez over the next two months as they try to limit the innings load for both. That could include a few spot starts should Pineda make another appearance on the IL as he did earlier this year.
  11. The Red Wings certainly are going to miss Davis, as are we fans. Any word if Raley is near a return as he could be a very good replacement. And kudos to Gordon who seems to have forgotten that he normally went into a slump this time of year. The Kernels are going to miss Teng. Expect his exit will hurt come playoff time. On the other hand, am glad it is Teng who is gone and not Escobar. Really appreciate Dman's first hand report of the Kernels, even though his comments about Javier were more than disappointing.
  12. For everyone wishing the Twins had traded some of their elite prospects for player X, they are missing one thing. By not trading them, they remain in the organization. Granted, prospect A, B or C could slide due to lack of performance. That is a risk, a real risk. But they also may maintain their status or even get better. Regardless, prospects A, B and C remain members of the organization. That means they are an asset that the Twins can trade in the future, whether that is this coming winter, next July or thereafter. With players like Lewis, Kirilloff and Graterol, they could be worth even more in the future.
  13. Losing Davis is tough, yet, means the Twins get to keep someone else when the 40-man crunch comes in November. And who knows, maybe they wouldn't have room to add Davis and he would be gone anyway. Personally, am gonna miss Teng. This kid had been great since his callup to Cedar Rapids. Have a feeling the Giants got a future starter...but hey, you have to give up something to get a good arm back. Is Dyson a rental? Or under contract beyond this year?
  14. Looking at this discussion reminds me that the Twins sure have gotten some excitement into their fans, eh? For me, time to take a break and grad a little lunch. Then come back for the really important announcement today...the FED.
  15. No. If I magically owned the Twins today, I would sell the team and take the $2+ billion and go live on that magical island!
  16. Like most, I will be disappointed if the Twins do nothing for the next 4 hours 51 minutes. But I won't call for the drastic measures some are. Is it possible the trades the Twins were close to making didn't happen because the players asked for was just too much to be reasonable? Yes, that is possible. Unfortunately, none of us will ever know what really is said in these discussions. My hope remains that they get at least someone comparable to Romo, preferably someone left handed. In an ideal world, I would hope they get a stud reliever. If nothing happens, on towards the play offs with the guys that got us here.
  17. I don't have Twitter, however, my vote goes to Bechtold. Although not putting up big numbers, he is having a nice year at the plate. If reports are true about his gold glove level defense, he just may be giving us reason to watch him more closely. Great night for the win column at 5-1. Which of the trio of Graterol, Duren or Colina is going to have a big major league career? Any of the three? Will one of the three no longer be a Twin later this afternoon?
  18. Keep checking this site every couple hours to see if that next trade has been finalized. So far, continue to be disappointed. As for going all in for Thor, forget it, even if the ask gets realistic. But the reliever they get has to be a good one, a step up from Romo, and under team control for at least another year. Also looking for another 40-man trade. Someone like Wiel, Hackimer, Raley (injured), Alcala or Rijo for a prospect who is a couple steps lower on the ladder.
  19. The GCL saved what could have been a 0 fer day in the organization. Expect we are going to see some good games and some not so good from Benninghoff this year. Yesterday, not so good. If I were another GM, I would be asking for Escobar when talking to the Twins about a trade. I see him as one of the better prospects in the organization, knowing others don't. Great seeing Lewis off to a hot start at AA. Sure is better than a replay to the start of his year at Fort Myers.
  20. Thanks, S.D. Expect Enlow has a good future, whether with the Twins or elsewhere.
  21. Thanks for a good read, Parker. Have been a huge Kepler fan sice he came on board as a 17 year old during the fall instructional league while attending high school across the street. Am a believer that he is still scratching the surface of what he can become. Commented several months ago, asking the question..."Can Max Kepler become a Hall of Famer?" If you project an average of 35 home runs a year, ten to twelve years from now he would be pushing towards or beyond 500. As he continues to gain more experience, is it unrealistic to expect him to retire with a lifetime .270-.280 average? Given those two marks, he would likely finish with 1,200 to 1,500 runs scored and RBI. Should he be fortunate enough to have good health so he can play into his mid-late 30's, do those numbers merit inclusion in that exclusive club? I don't know if he will last that long and perform at those levels. But of all the current Twins, I am most excited about his having a chance to. I know during the past off season lots of people here and elsewhere where begging the Twins to sign Bryce Harper while making Max a fourth outfielder, back up first baseman or even trading him. Let me ask the question today, who would you rather have on your team, Kepler or Bryce Harper? Looking at their current production, I'll take Max even before comparing contracts. Wouldn't you?
  22. Wasn't it almost exactly a year ago when Duran joined the organization and nearly pitched a no hitter for his new team, Cedar Rapids? Sure seems like he settles in nicely for that first game. Cedar Rapids to Pensacola in twelve months would put him on track to be with the Twins late next year. How do Duran and Graterol do if put against each other? Which has the better future? Which is more likely to achieve it? Which would get the bigger return in a trade? Which is most likely to no longer be a Twin on Thursday? Looks like my Wisconsin guy, Schulfer, hasn't been as good of late. Could he be wearing down in his first full professional season? And Wallner sure looks like a good one, a lot like Rooker and Larnach. Is he adequate defensively in a corner outfield position?
  23. I don't know if Baldelli was consulted prior to finalizing this deal. But when talking about it last night, I became aware that Romo spent time with the Rays recently when Rocco was there. So he knows Romo and should have inside knowledge of what Romo can do for the Twins.
  24. Totally agree with your points, Brock. They were among the reasons I like this trade. I also believe the Twins need to add a lefty to their pen, someone who can come in for a couple tough left handed hitters. All I was saying is it would have been nice had Romo also filled that need as I now fear if they only do one more move it won't be for a lefty.
