  1. Isn't Duffey settling into his role nicely? Has been great coming out of the pen with men on base and keeping there on most days.
  2. I am guessing Thorpe as well. Could be Stewart, but that 3.0 inning outing by Thorpe the other day seemed to set him up for a recall. What is going to be interesting is how many September call ups they make this year. Wade, Astudillo, Stashak, Stewart, Dobnak, Poppen, Smeltzer, and whomever gets sent down when they activate Cruz. That's at least seven. Rijo is looking like a real nice pickup.
  3. The GCL Twins are quietly putting together a very nice season, now 10 games over .500 at 25-15. Although 1.5 games behind the Orioles (their division), they are the leaders for the one wild card spot. With a bit over two weeks remaining in their season, they need to stay hot. Will we be seeing Astudillo and Wade begin their rehabs later this week? Got to believe you were right, Steve, and the Twins plans were the reason Thorpe threw only 3.0 innings. Will he be the second lefty in the Twins pen as we move into September? Think I need to start paying closer attention to Laweryson. Get to know him a bit better.
  4. What an ugly QUALITY start for Perez. But the results were great. Dyson had to give his confidence a shot in the arm. Also built some confidence for the team in using him. Isn't Gonzalez turning out to be a key part of this team. Wonderful late off-season signing.
  5. Yes, Yes, and Yes. Unfortunately, he will probably end up in the top 3, but not the winner. Biggest thing going against him is that as far as baseball is concerned he came out of nowhere. Also will be hurt a bit by less plate appearances than some of the others.
  6. I knew they were good. This was the best team Excelsior had in nearly 20 years since they last went to the Series in 2001. The Excelsior GM has been a friend for over 20 years. He is the guy who had all the great Twins contacts back when Mr. Ryan was running things. My son played for them from 1998-2000. Unbelievable program who travels America and beyond. Don't know what their annual budget is today, but was around $100k back when. Their biggest fund raiser was delivering US West phone books and yellow pages. Delivered to most of the homes West of Lake Calhoun, South of I-394/Hwy 12, and north of Highway 5. If you lived there, we delivered your directories. Each player/family had to deliver books to about 5,000 homes each JAN/FEB.
  7. Must say I really liked Dobnak the other night. Seems like a bulldog who could have a future. Will agree probably won't be this year. Glad a few mentioned Hildenberger. Assuming he is now healthy and he can make a couple minor adjustments over the next ten days, he is the best candidate to step up and make a difference. Everyone else is trying to find the best #7 or #8 guy in the pen. HIldenberger could be someone who slides in with the big three in a set-up role. Still would like to see another lefty out there. Don't know who that will be, but there are some options, albeit not great ones. By that I do not mean that I don't like Smeltzer or Thorpe, just that they haven't been relievers and it may be difficult to get the most out of them switching to the pen.
  8. Can I ask for a moment of silence today? Excelsior Legion came thru the winners bracket of the Central Plains American Legion Regional, only to drop two Sunday to Fargo. Excelsior finished their season with a 56-4 record, missing another trip to the World Series.
  9. Will be very interesting to see if the Twins are as aggressive with Wallner's promotions as they were with Rooker.
  10. Also another real nice start from Winder. Will he be the opening day starter in the playoffs next month? Saw that Marin had a couple very good starts in late June. Otherwise, has been very ordinary. Doubt they will be concerned that he is Rule 5 eligible this winter, will they Seth? Interesting to look at a comparison of Wallner and Rooker? Both play similar positions, had comparable success in college and were drafted around the same place in their respective drafts. What do you think about how they compare?
  11. I doubt it, sypcake, although I agree he has been one of our best pitchers the previous couple years. 40-man roster spots are going to be tight. Do you choose an injured Wells over Graterol, Duran, Rijo, Alcala or Jax? Or over Blankenhorn, Raley or Javier? That's 8 players needing protection. Maybe they will have 8 spots, but doubtful. So you would not only have to bump one of the above, but maybe more than one should they only open spots for 6 or 7 to add Wells. Interesting dilemma the FO is going to be facing come November.
  12. Looked at Cedar Rapids box score this morning with a different question on my mind. The Kernels are already in the play offs. With all the player movement, was wondering what their chances look like. With pitchers like Balazovic, Enlow and Teng moving on or gone, who will step up after Labor Day. Will one be Cabezas? Or maybe Schulfer will get back to the pitcher he was early this season. They also should be able to count on Rijo, Winder and Palm. Hopefully, Celestino will remain hot and lead the offense. Maybe Steer will heat up and hit like he did the first several weeks with the team. Yunior Severino should also help now that he is healthy. And wouldn't it be nice if Wander Javier would step up and be the stud who leads the Kernels in the play offs. The Kernels are in the play offs. Hopefully, they will make it one game further than last year.
  13. I don't know what would have happened after that out at home, had he not sent him. But count me among those who would not have done so. The only Twin I might have considered sending there would have been Buxton. But with his speed he would have been well beyond third sooner that AD.
  14. Good day in the win column with the GCL Twins splitting a twin bill the only blemish on an otherwise perfect day. And how bout those Red Wings, who at 60-58 remain 2 games over .500. Miranda is probably wondering what he needs to do to be your Hitter of the Day. Two home runs didn't get it done, at least yesterday. He and Bechtold are both having good years at the plate. Hopefully, one will continue getting better as they move through the organization to give the Twins depth at third base.
  15. Didn't see the game as Mediacom went AWOL about 7pm and didn't return until about 5 minutes after the game ended. Liked Odorizzi's comments in the post game about preferring more pitches to more runs, as he explained his 5.2 inning outing.
  16. Great report, mlhouse, thanks. And who the heck does Vallimont think he is, Duran? Don't know if you saw this Tom, but after Kirilloff led off the Pensacola game with a home run, the next time up he was hit by a pitch. No way for me to know if it was an intentional fast ball or the pitcher lost a curve ball or something. Regardless, I don't like seeing that BS, especially with the young man I believe is our #1 prospect. The good news is that he got another hit later on and the Blue Wahoos won. And isn't Matt Wallner having a nice start to his professional career. Haven't compared it to Rooker, but seems similar.
  17. Am confident the Twins will win tonight and tomorrow to end up with a split...the hard way. Smeltzer has looked good in several appearances, NOT against Cleveland. Looks like he has to have nearly perfect command. Will see if he makes it long-term. Don't know what to think about Dobnak, other than I was impressed. Watching him last night, kept thinking he reminds me of some pitcher from the past, someone who was very good. Can't remember if it was some Twin over the past 30 years, a Brave from back in the 50's or 60's, or a Brewer after they came to Milwaukee. Kind of a bulldog, both in stature and how he seems to pitch. Hopefully, Dobnak will get a start 5 games from now and we will see how he does. OK, they got the first of two home run records. Now lets get back on the winning track!!!
  18. In answer to your question, August 23 is the day I expect Graterol to arrive in the TC...or wherever they are playing on that date.
  19. I enjoyed your article, Ted, and am in agreement with what you said. We all must remember that Buxton has been out again for awhile and the team doesn't play as well when he is MIA. Unfortunately, he won't be back until later this month or even Labor Day. Hopefully, Buxton and Cruz are both back around September 1 and the team plays in September like it did in May. Won't that be fun! Should have the problems with the pitching staff ironed out by then also. Don't know what the answers will be, but expect they will find a few.
  20. Saw in today's Strib that Gibson was 'under the weather last night.' If that is correct, not feeling 100% could be a reason he wasn't at his best. Not a good game for it to happen, but ….. happens.
  21. Is it time, Seth, to remove Arraez from the prospect list? Heck, he may be the best rookie in the American League. What a wonderful outing by Balazovic on his return from the Pan Am Games. Assume there isn't time left in the season for him to move up. Hopefully, he will lead the Miracle to a second championship. Although Jax wasn't great, he wasn't terrible either in his first game at AAA. Hopefully, he gets back to his usual self next time out.
  22. Don't know what the future holds for this team, playoffs, wild card or the late fall off to begin preparation for 2020. But I do know that this team seems to believe they are never out of a game. What is becomming clear to me, however, is: 1. Contrary to my previous belief, the FO better begin planning on finding four starters for their 2020 rotation. Hopefully, they will find one or two from the trio of Thorpe, Smeltzer and Dobnak, who all should see lots of time on the Target Field mound the next 7 weeks. 2. It really looks like Zach Littell will be a key part of their 2020 bullpen, and 3. Luis Arraez will be their starting second baseman for the next six years, or longer.
  23. Exactly type of game one wants to see from a pitcher who has gotten his feet wet in the big leagues. Agree with the above comment, let's see him make another start or two where he can focus on being dominant. Then come back and get the job done like we all hope he can, this September and in 2020 and beyond. Am excited to see how Jax does today in his first start in AAA.
