  1. Yes. He doesn't need to be on the 25-man roster to travel with the team. Should treat it like being on the IL, which is where he should be.
  2. I would not be surprised if they go with 13 pitchers, especially if Adrianza is not 100% by next week. There is a chance that Thorpe could be the key to winning one of those bullpen games. Yes, he needs more experience and work to become the solid starter I see him becomming. But we have seen a very good Thorpe several times over the past couple months. With the likelihood that the team will be using only two traditional starters, I see Thorpe potentially playing a key role in cobbling those other two games together.
  3. Four game lead, six to go....I'll take it. This entire year we have watched a team do things that have never been done before in this very old game. Got a feeling we are going to see things next week we also have never seen before...like not having a starting pitcher in two of the first four games?
  4. What a fantastic suggestion, Andrew. Hopefully, Rocco and his staff have the guts to do something like this. I feel for Gibby, but unless he gets one more shot this week after we clinch and does very well, I don't see how he can even be on the playoff roster. Expect there will also be a lot of thought into whether or not Perez is on the roster. Expect he will be, but might not be on mine. My 12 man pitching staff would be Berrios, Odorizzi, Rogers, Romo, Duffey, May, Littell, Stashak, Schmeltzer, Thorpe, Dobnak and Graterol. If Perez is on it, expect Graterol will not be.
  5. Sort of brings a tear to my eye when reading this, Seth. A bit of a shame he never got that call from the Twins. Assume he is a minor league free agent this year?
  6. Great discussion of his situation, Nick, thanks! It is sad to see a very good pitcher and better person go thru what he is dealing with right now. As I said elsewhere, I might give him one more start but only after the Twins have clinched. But I don't know the total medical situation and if it is as bad as it appears probably is best to just shut it down for the year. As for the future, there will be risk to both Gibson and whatever team signs him. I hope that it is the Twins, although it would have to be a one year incentive laden contract. Will someone else offer more?
  7. What a game, one that I thought the Twins had little to no chance once they fell behind 3-0. No faith, eh? I will second DocBauer's comments about Thorpe. Yes, he gave up a couple runs. But I see a young man who is going thru his first year jitters while learning how to be a major league pitcher. He has an amazing ability to fill the zone with strikes, perhaps too many at some part of the game. There have been a lot of very good pitchers who struggled their first year on the mound. I believe there is a real chance Thorpe could be one of them. As for Gibby, I see him getting one start late next week after the Twins have clinched. I have to believe that the toll his physical problems have taken on his body make it almost certain he cannot get the job done once we get to the playoffs. When nothing matters, take one last look and if it is more of the same shut him down for the rest of the year. As for next year, would not be opposed to signing him to some type of one year contract. He is a quality person who has done much for the organization over the past whatever years, both on and off the field. But he would have to come back healthy and earn his spot in the rotation.
  8. Don't know Matt if you were talking about music in general, or musicians. But let's remember Sheryl Crowe is from Missouri, although Southeastern MO. The one great thing I have found in both Kansas City and St. Louis is great food. Although I haven't been back in many years (they were on summer vacation when I went to a Twins series there several years ago) my favorite restaurant in the country was Al's in St. Louis. What worries me is that we have 7 games left with KC and they have played us tough all year. Let's hope that the bullpen game we faced last night isn't a formula for the Royale's to follow these next ten games. My feeling is we need to win 3 of 4 this weekend. I am hopeful that the Tribe will lose at least one. That would take the magic number down to 3 when we go on the road with 6 games to go. That should put the Twins in great shape to take care of their business and not worry about Cleveland. To be honest, I want to clinch the first part of next week in Detroit, just to make Gardy's night!
  9. When I read about everything Killebrew did and who he was as a person, I feel very humble about all that I haven't done in my life. It is great seeing these young men get involved in these communities. They truly are an asset to their respective communities, the Twins organization, and our nation. Thanks!
  10. Didn't check, but didn't Jeffers play the entire season? Rortvedt missed most of the last two months, in which case this will make up some of those at bats. Same situation for Raley. This is something they often do and it would be unlikely any of the six teams would send more than one catcher. With at least three catchers on each team they won't get all that many at bats as is.
  11. The catcher situation will be one of the few, if not the only, position player that will need to be addressed this winter. Are the Twins comfortable with Astudillo as the primary backup, say playing 40% of the games? Or is he better suited to the 13th man, third catcher, playing all over the place with the option of going down to Rochester for awhile, if necessary? In either case, they will need to go out and get a catcher this winter. But he could be a solid backup, preferable batting from the left side...of which Castro would be an option. Or he could be a player with some major league experience who is signed to a minor league contract...also preferably swinging from the left side. This would be the cheaper, both $$$ and 40-man spot, option. But to go the cheaper option, the Twins will need to be comfortable with Astudillo behind the plate. And yes, they may be more comfortable with that option than some of us...not necessarily me. In either case, I don't see Rortvedt or Jeffers being an option to break camp with the Twins. Either has a chance to fill out that #2 or #3 slot by late summer with it likely one of them will be ready.
  12. Thanks for an excellent write up, Steve. This will be a huge opportunity for Raley and Rortvedt. After missing so much of the season at AAA, will give Raley a real chance to show his stuff. Will be showing his stuff to both the Twins and other scouts. With the 40-man crunch coming, I could see Raley being a valuable part of a big trade betore Thanksgiving. Did a double take when you reminded me how young Rortvedt is. It's a bit hard to believe how well he did this season as a catcher who was only 21. Like Raley, he missed the last part of his season with an injury. Does anyone know if he was battling an injury the last weeks he played prior to going on the IL? If so, that could be part of the reason his offensive performance was down. Thanks again, Steve.
  13. The 28 limit may not be as bad as we think. I heard Falvey interviewed during a game a few weeks ago. He said it was 28 with an *. The * means that they designate 28 players at the beginning of each series. Those players can be changed for the next series. There was speculation that the two starters who won't be starting a game in the series could be left off the roster as well as other changes. So it sounds like the team could keep around 30-32 players available with only 28 rostered for each series. Kind of like what the NHL does every game. They also didn't sound all that certain how this would work. Seemed to me that there may be more fine tuning before we get to next opening day.
  14. Went to bed with the game in the 10th. Continued watching until the top of the 12th was finished with the Twins down 8-6. Gave control of the remote to my wife who put the sleep timer on and changed to Home and Garden as I went to sleep. Woke up this morning and put CNBC on to check the pre market around 4:30 and saw the scores scroll across the bottom. Had to wait until they came around a second time to believe what I had seen. I haven't been a huge fan of Lamonte Wade. No real reason, other than he just never did anything that I could get excited about...as I do about Kirilloff, Rooker, Larnach now or Span and others back when. As I watch him get more playing time the last week or so I am warming. Doubt we will see him on next year's opening day roster. But assuming he has more options, he certainly is someone that can play at AAA and be available when the Twins have an injury to one of the four outfielders on their 2020 roster. I expect the magic number to be between 1 and 3 when they depart for their season ending road trip Sunday night. If they are, the division title is secure. Should it be 4, 5 or 6, they are gonna have to play very good ball next week. But I don't see 4-6 as likely as wins in 3 of the remaining 5 games this week and at least one loss by Cleveland puts their number at 3.
  15. And what a job at turning what was the team's major weakness early in the season into an area of strength. Your explanation was an enjoyable read, Ted, Thanks. Granted, last night didn't go well. Yet, other than May getting frustrated and then allowing the second dinger, most of the relievers other than Harper did a decent job. Will agree that next year's 8 man bullpen does need a good situational lefty. Expect they will rotate AAA starters in the long role as they did this year and other than the lefty don't see any changes in 2020.
  16. Thanks Cody for recognizing a player I have thought has been under recognized for several years. The more I watch Arraez play, the more I question the negative comments about his defense. He likely will never win a golden glove. But the player I see is solid at second base and surprisingly adequate at third. After a couple blunders in left field when he began playing out there, he seems to be adequate there as well. Perhaps his biggest negative is that he isn't fast and his range, especially at second, is somewhat limited. I don't get hung up over his power, or lack thereof. Someone who has the ability to get on base about 40% of the time while hitting for an average well over .300 has a ton of value, at least on my team. For me, he would be right next to Garver as being untouchable (among the most recent position players to join the team) when the Twins enter trade discussions this coming winter. As for the future, although I am certain he will have a year or two during his career that don't meet his norm, I expect him to continue playing as is for the next decade plus. Considering he is only 22, there is a likelihood that he should even get a bit better at his trade...both with the bat and defensively.
  17. Also took notice of those shots at the end of last nights game. Just love the chemistry of this team. That's the reason I am fearful should they trade any of the top 10.
  18. After giving up a couple runs early, Berrios settled down and rolled thru the next 5.1 innings like an ACE should. Great seeing him back in the saddle. Wasn't the blowout win I always hope for, but, a win is a win is a win. Now on to game 2 with Giolito in the dugout. Doubt we can expect the Indians to lose many of the three at Detroit, but every win reduces that magic number. I want to see it at 2 when the Twins get on the plane Sunday night.
  19. What's the old saying from back when? Spahn and Sain and two days of rain. Could our winning formula be Berrios and Odorizzi and three days of rain?
  20. Thanks, Nick. Its gonna be a very interesting two weeks. The Twins will focus on, 1) getting that magic number to zero; 2) resting players without allowing them to go stale, and 3) deciding who the heck will be the fourth starter for the playoffs (and maybe even third). Smeltzer and Dobnak have looked good and their stock is rising. Yes, Thorpe had a rough outing Saturday night but still is in the hunt for a key role come October. And those four guys you mentioned above certainly look like a very solid core for the Twins pen in 2020. The only move I see that is needed over the winter is to find a good lefty specialist.
  21. Didn't see much of the game as I was watching the Pack vs. Vikings. Was a bit shocked when I flipped over and saw Dobnak still pitching in the 5th inning. One hell of a performance by that young man. Also saw some of Romero putting guys on base. Don't know what is going to happen to that young man over the coming year. Yes, we lost yesterday in a game that we didn't put our best team out there. But all those pitchers who pitched Saturday got a days rest. If anyone had told us last Friday morning the team would be flying home with a 4.5 game lead we all would have been more than happy. Bring on the White Sox.
  22. What an outing by Graterol. Jumped off the couch when I saw that one pitch at 102. I know their plans are to have him be a starter. But can you imagine how he would do as a closer? Don't know if he is ready to start out of spring training or if he will need to begin 2020 at AAA. After giving up very few walks while with the Twins this season, Thorpe lost sight of the strike zone yesterday. As rough as his stuff was, was great seeing him keep the game tied by striking out the side with the bases loaded. Still have faith this kid is part of future Twins rotations. Interesting question will be how long Dobnak can go today and who comes in after him? Harper, Romero, Alcala, Romo?
  23. That would be ideal. Got a feeling he may see his first appearance in the late innings tonight in another huge game.
  24. Have a question about Alcala. When his season in Rochester ended, wouldn't he have gone home to the Dominican Republic after Rochester's season was over on Labor Day? Did he stay in Fort Myers at the Twins complex in anticipation of something like this happening? Answers one of the questions regarding moves before the Rule 5 draft.
  25. One hell of a game. And was that the most important game of the year? Win one and we leave Cleveland in good shape for the championship. That's in the books. Win one of the next two and we leave in great shape. Win both and Happy Days are Hear Again! They were all very good, but was Littell the best pitcher the Twins threw out there today? Bullpen is going to be in great shape in the playoffs and next year. And even better if Dyson gets back to being the pitcher in 2020 that he was earlier this year.
