2023 MLB Draft Day 3 Thread
MN_ExPat replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
That's too funny. I was literally thinking the same thing when I was watching video of him. I like the pick as well and also think he's still growing into his body/frame. Could be a really interesting player if/when he puts it all together. Should be fun .- 82 replies

2023 MLB Draft Day 2 Thread

BCU is a D1 school. Not a terribly good one, but none the less... still a D1 .- 126 replies

2023 MLB Draft Day 2 Thread
MN_ExPat replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
Was he the kid who was a LSU commit? If that is the one that I'm thinking about, the signability concerns may come from his apparent strong desire to play at LSU.- 126 replies

Good point and I don't disagree really, just meant that he's still somewhat new to the OF. He's athletic, has good baseball instincts and that he has the potential to grow into at least a passable CF in the majors. Like any draft prospect though, we won't know for sure until he get his feet wet in professional ball.

Consensus MLB Draft Board V2
MN_ExPat replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
Totally get that thought, but I would play Devil's Advocate and say after watching Dollander pitch last year... his stuff is legit. I think the argument can be strongly made that Skenes is the better/more polished pitcher right now, but I still (IMHO) think the Twins wouldn't go wrong by picking Dollander at #5. -

This Relief Prospect Might Be the Next Caleb Thielbar
MN_ExPat replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I concur... plus he has to have one of the coolest names in the Twins system. I would totally try to get him to use AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" as his intro song. ...and yes, I know, I probably need help but I can't help but giggle like a 12 year old at that 🤷♂️😄. -

Thanks Lucas. Great write up, and super informative as always. -

LET'S GO BOYS!!!!! Big hat tip to Varland. Dude gathered himself and was money. Lopez. Was. Nails. Great job by a team that simply said "Hell no, we are not backing down!" There's still work to be done. Now finish the job.

Hard to say. He's (only ) throwing mid 80's right now (although just thinking about even that velo makes my shoulder hurt). A lot will depend on how much he progresses through the end of the season and his offseason regime. He's heading down to a place in Florida for a velocity and conditioning program (think someplace like the Baseball Ranch in Texas) this coming summer. Coach wanted him to sit closer to 90 before committing to a starting role, so we shall see.

Outside of a nightmare, crooked number inning earlier this spring (other team went all Houston Astros 🤬), he's done fairly well for a freshman. Second on the team in appearances. He would be leading that category, but his shoulder has been a little sore recently, so he hasn't pitched in a week or so. Unfortunately, when you're a reliever one bad inning can bloat that ERA 🤷♂️. Edit: Funny side note. One of his current teammates, was a teammate of 2022 1st Round Draft pick Dylan Lesko at Buford HS.

I appreciate the sentiment (and I'm sure my son would appreciate it somewhat not getting charged extra runs ) but I still find my self at the thought of something like this actually being implemented...

I also see a LOT of good midwestern kids heading south or committing to head south to play ball. It's not like the Gophers are a bad team or place to play, but the allure and draw of the bigger southern schools is hard to resist.

I concur also Melissa. Love the write ups about not just the games, but the whole stadium experience. It's been a few years since I was able to take in a game at the Target, and I know that things have been updated a bit since then so it's great to hear from folks who are really passionate about being there. SKOL!!

Not to nitpick, but... that's like me telling my (college baseball player) son to "just throw strikes" 🤷♂️. It's a huge oversimplification, as I'm pretty sure a professional baseball player knows his job is to hit the ball and move the runners over. Just so you know though... I don't say this as an attack or an attempt to be snarky. Only that there is waaay more to it than just that simple statement and that the player has to execute said directives at the end of the day, not the manager.

Twins Roster Built on Defense and Rule Changes
MN_ExPat replied to Alex Boxwell's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I concur. I've always loved to hear what the guys who play or have played the game (especially at a really high level) think and how they process what is going on. Really appreciate the great work Alex.- 33 replies

Love it squirrel, super jealous though. Pictures and videos are really great (I'm pretty sure that the unknown photo player with the red arm sleeve is Brooks Lee).

2023 Prospect Previews: Ben Ross
MN_ExPat replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
You just pretty much described the (almost) whole of MiLB . -
Totally understand . When I talked to him afterwards, he basically said the same thing. And yes we did really enjoy it (after he was done of course... I don't think I took a breath at all the whole time). Coach (and former Minnesota Twins prospect!) Simons put him into the fire right away. Bases loaded, 1 out Top of the 8th, his team up 4-2... struck out the first batter on a really filthy CU and got the final batter to weakly pop-up to 2B to end the inning. Back out for the 9th, he got 2 quick outs, walked what might have been the other teams best hitter (almost got him to chase another CU that he threw on a 3-2 count) and then got the final hitter on a pretty nasty 1-2 Slider to end the game. An exceptionally cool experience to say the least.

Covenant College. It's a D3 near Chattanooga. It may not have the glamour of a Tennessee or similar type program, but those are some really talented and hard working kids/young men .

Thanks Seth. Great write up as usual. Love to hear about these guys.... Names (especially new ones) that you hear about during the minor league write ups, but don't really have a lot of background on. Really brings home the the best part of baseball (to me at least ). On an unrelated side note, but one of the best parts of baseball... While not Twins stuff... well sort of, his head coach is a one time Twins prospect (and I realize that almost no one outside of me and momma will care, but... ), my son made his collegiate debut this last Saturday as a Freshman in a pressure packed, high leverage save situation (bases loaded, 8th inning, 1 out, his team leading 4-2). Got a swinging K on the first batter and induced a weak pop up to end the inning. Then finished off the 9th with a swinging K for a two inning save.

Ole Miss is a pretty good team in a really tough conference. Even though they came up a little short, that really speaks to the talent they do have and their resilience. Gophers should definitely not hang their heads after that one.

Thanks again Alex. Love to hear about your former teammate's little brother. Stories like that are just some of the things that make the college game so great. On a more personal note (shameless plug 🤷♂️)... my son just told me he will probably make his first appearance of the season (and probably even more exciting to me) his first collegiate appearance this week. Needless to say, I'm probably more nervous than he is.
