  1. That was interesting. I'm not sure baseball execs would go the same route though.
  2. Do we know what Roberto Gonzalez, Gabrial Ojeda and Tyree Davis got? Including what they may have recieved, the Twins seem to have just under a quarter million to throw at some of the tough signs. So the contenders are McCarthy Tatum HS (pick 20), Taylor Hern JC (25), Cameron Avila-Leeper HS (29), Sam Hilliard JC (31), Orynn Veillon HS (32), Mike Baumann HS (34), Brad Mathiowetz HS (35), Kirvin Moesquit HS (36), John Jones HS (39), Dalton Guthrie HS (40). Of course, if the Twins were of the mind to, they could go 10% over budget without getting draft pick penalties next year.
  3. Only because this team more often than not promotes based on seniority rather than results. Wheeler is definately deserving of a promotion, but Berrios has been better.
  4. The Yankees have publicly stated this is there intention. I'd have to believe there are plenty of other clubs that are also going to do this but who have the good sense to keep it to themselves until the signings begin. I'm not anticipating the Twins getting any of the top 20 or so guys unless the Twins also go over their allotment which I think we all suspect they will not.
  5. Yeah, I don't think teams or fans are complaining that high average guys are also hitting HR too. I think these guys are still around, but they just aren't always as prominent as the HR hitters who are also hitting for a high average. Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia seem to apply. Joey Votto had a couple of plus power seasons but looks to have more average power now. Same with Andrew McCuthen, I'm not sure that he profiles to be more than a low 20 HR per year guy going forward. If Freddy Freeman continues to hit, I don't know that he will hit with a ton of power and rookie Christian Yelich seems to be a high average low power guy as well.
  6. Mauer is probably past the point where a move to 3B would work. However, being an athlete doesn't necessarily mean you have every tool, to me it means that the tools you have are strong and you know how to use them to compensate for any that are lacking. I think if Mauer would have started off at 3B we wouldn't be talking about moving him away from there because despite any shortcomings associated with aging, he'd know how to make up for them. But I don't think it's viable to move him now, he doesn't have the muscle memory or experience to compensate for the elements that are lacking.
  7. NB will soon enough be getting an even bigger star. Delaying a deserved promotion would not be in the teams best interest. NB surely knows Vargas won't be playing there next year. The NB deal will come down to factors from off the field, namely $$$$.
  8. That's hard news, I was always a big fan. He and Puckett always had a lot of similarities in the evolustion of their games and what they meant to their franchises. Unfortunately passing too young is another.
  9. I know, I haven't heard him and was wondering if anyone else had.
  10. Your assertion was that teams incrementally rebuild and you included the Yankees as an example. I agree that the Yankees incrementally rebuild as they bring in a mulitple vets each year and suppliment them with younger talent when they are ready. This is not what Houston, Miami and Pittsburgh do. They overhaul the whole operation and stock the 25 man mostly with players younger than 30-years-old, usually much younger. I'm not casting judgment on which method is best, I am arguing against the notion that the Twins are "rebuilding" the same way that every other club does it.
  11. No surprise he didn't go to Rochester when he was Designated for DFA.
  12. ONLY the Yankees "rebuild" the way the Twins do, going after aging vets. Except the Yankees do it with better quality aging vets. The other recent celler dwellers who are reversing their fortunes, Houston, Miami and Pittsburgh, gutted their teams of nearly every vet and went with young players. Your assertion that the people who aren't in favor of the "Yankee" rebuild are impatient is flat out wrong, getting these vets will probably win a couple of extra games each year, but those of us who want the vets flipped or cut understand and are willing to accept the longer, more fruitful rebuild.
  13. Well when Ryan is in charge, I think Gardy's influence is limited to advice. With Ryan out, I suspect it is much more substantial.
  14. Has anyone heard Coomer with his new gig? He always struck me as down to earth but still too uneven and rough around the edges. Perhaps a season or two with training wheels would be good enough to bring him back as the future replacement.
  15. Young men have been putting undue stress on their wrists since the beginning of time
  16. Nice interview. I think he'll figure it out. The best strikeout pitchers don't pitch around guys though, they also pound the zone. They throw pitches the batter either can't hit or don't expect. Phil Hughes isn't pitching around guys.
  17. The team seemed to have a pretty damn good 6' pitcher last decade. He too could miss bats with three pitches.
  18. Wha?!? Top 8 in FB and GB? Does that seem strange to anyone? Clearly the lack of strikeouts will mean his other in-play percentages will be higher, but his LD% is also low. I can't tell if this is exceptional or lucky to the point that it's going to implode. How can he be getting guys to induce both a high number of weak ground balls and weak pop ups? It seems odd that his pitches would almost always be missing the square part of the bat both above AND below.
  19. I'd think we would have heard about an injury if there was one, but 55 pitches after 2 innings sounds suspicious to me. No one wants to give up 3 ER in 2 innings, but it seems pretty rare to remove a guy because of that. Plenty of guys give up 3 ER in the first two innings and end up looking respectable when their final line is 3ER after 6 innings.
  20. Steve Avery and Jon Olerud I think was the last. Let's do it. Olerud in fact never played in the minors until his final season when he had a rehab assignment.
  21. but is expected to refuse his assignment to Rochester. Not sure what he's expecting, other clubs surely are able to see he has issues that are not compatible to playing on a MLB roster. Seems like most vets recently have swallowed their pride and accepted the AAA reassignment. Kubel does not appear to be willing to do the same for the Twins. Perhaps this refusal also sheds some light on what his attitude would have been had he been sent to Rochester to start the season as would have been the Twins perogative. It was reported that he was all but promised a 25-man spot which seemed odd considering his recent track record and his poor spring training performance.
  22. I think it's just a matter of the Twins finally finding a pitcher who's skill set fits their desired philosophy. The Twins have always wanted pitchers who pound the strikezone but Hughes is the first starter since Johan Santana and (the good) Scott Baker that can do that AND miss an above average number of bats.
  23. Yes we can consider that, and four consecutive past ball strike out's as unearned. I'm fine with that.
  24. This is not true, you'll see that the top pitchers in the league tend to strikeout more batters. Besides, I think ERA is outdated. What's an Earned run anyway? All runs are Earned in my book as they would be 100% preventable had the pitcher struck out the batter as God intended him to.
  25. What are you talking about? Dozier is crushing both of them in OPS+ and WAR. In fact he's leading all of MLB 2B in WAR and ISO and leading the AL 2B in wOBP and wRC. What stats are you looking at? If you're looking at traditional stats he has more HR than them both combined. He's leading the league in Runs and has more RBI than Kinsler and only two less than Cano despite hitting leadoff nearly all year. The only possible thing you could be looking at to make that decision is batting average. If anything, the only reason one would NOT vote for Dozier, is because it's a popularity contest.
