  1. I'm not arguing that it's not flawed, but it's still not breaking the rule. It's simply a bad rule. Until it's changed, the team's that aren't using the flaw to better their team is doing a disservice to their fans and the whole organization. Well except the bean counters. I am for a draft, and I hoe the rule is changed. It should be more fair for the have-nots. These guys will still be making more money then they will playing ball on the Latin American ball fields. If they're good, they'll make a lot more. But until there is a draft, or until the rule is changed, I don't want to hear the Twins or any other team who has a vote in this process complain about it. Mock indignation sounds pretty hollow when the only thing harmed is the profit margins. And to be clear, I've never heard the Twins complain about this, nor have I heard them say they are against this rule and would not use it to their advantage.
  2. Just like a free throw in basketball. You're not supposed to foul another player but the penalty isn't severe enough to stop teams from doing it both unintentionally and intentionally.
  3. Why is it cheating? There's no rule against it, and there are consequences for doing it. If all teams are able to do this it's a level playing field. Is it cheating for a middle infielder to drop a boarderline pop up that wasn't called the infield fly rule by umps and then turn a double play? Is it cheating to steal signs? Is it cheating to sign Jason Kubel to a minor league contract so you don't yet have to cut an extra player all while promising him he'll get a 25 man spot regardless of what happens in the spring training?
  4. Which would be frustrating considering plenty of teams will likely be going over budget. I hope the Twins surprise us and game the system also. It's likely this sytem is going to have to be remodled after the Cubs and Rangers exposed this loophole, I hope the Twins are smart enough and liberal enough to take advantage while they can.
  5. Have you never heard of Super Leap Year? It's when we lose a whole damn week of February instead of just a day. So I'm told.
  6. Maybe Terry doesn't want to upset his conservative cousin Paul by dealing with those damn dirty socialists.
  7. Not bashing the team at all, but I suspect their win total will be lower. As bad as the offense has been recently, I think it will get worse. So many guys are playing over their head right now. Maybe Mauer will pick up the pace, but no way Santana, Suzuki, Escobar and Willingham replicate their first half numbers. Willingham's OPS has actually dropped over 100 points this week alone. I think the slide continues for a bit.
  8. If it is lingering concussion issues, and I'm not saying it is, does any other team have this same chronic problem? Koskie, Morneau, Span and Mauer all having season ending (or crippling) concussions which seems to follow them into the following season or longer. What's happening here that isn't happening elsewhere? I'm sure Mauer will refind his stroke once he goes to Denver. Maybe it's an altitude thing.
  9. Were they not trying to win a bunch of games against Boston? If they were, they failed miserably which isn't good indicator for the rest of the season. If they weren't, well then we have a whole different problem. Willingham, Suzuki and Morales are all free agents after this season. The Twins don't get to decide in the offseason who they get to keep. At that point, the decision is up to the player.
  10. Things worked out pretty well for Farris Buehler.
  11. Not if he's counting on the Twins offense or bullpen to get him the requisit 300 wins that is assumed to be automatic inclusion.
  12. Well that's more like I expected.
  13. I'm kind of surprised someone wasn't on base. That normally seems like a game ending situation.
  14. Does everyone remember when I said Chris Parmelee would join Jose Bautista as the only player to score a run agains Uehara this year? Everyone remembers right? Don't bother looking it up, it's in one of these threads somewhere.
  15. I hadn't heard the Navarreto comp to Salvador Perez. Perez is an above average defensive catcher, I guess I didn't hear much about his defense last year, but I thought coming out of the draft Navaretto was supposed to be a subpar defensive catcher. Looking forward to seeing some of these guys. I'm glad to see Cederoth is going to get a chance to start. If they were going to keep him in the pen I probably would have been disappointed if they didn't put him in CR.
  16. Clearly you haven't seen these MLB salaries lately.
  17. I'd think the move to NB instead of Rochester has something to do with the RH conversion. Perhaps someone down there is better equipped to handle or has experience with this kind of situation. Or as someone above said, perhaps they don't want him to learn against a bunch of 28-year old junkballers who will never give him a good look.
  18. I hope not, I wouldn't want them to base who gets called up based on their pitcher they predestined them to be paired with at the MLB level. Reminds me of everytime I pick a checkout line at the grocery store. I think I chose the fastest lane only to have the person in front of me pull out a checkbook instead of the debit card.
  19. He just can't get on base. His OBP is under .300 and he's only taken 19 BB compared to 73K. I love the power, but he's not going anywhere if he can't make more contact and draw more walks. One would think the best power hitter in the league would get pitched around, but the numbers indicate that he wants to swing at everything.
  20. Right, but then you're counting on the one season out of 15 that Erickson will produce his "Ace" season as opposed to the nearly 100% success rate of Hernandez. Those odds are terrible. How would you even begin to suspect that Erickson's "Ace" season would even coincide with a year your team is in position to win? Also, while I had fond memories of Scott Erickson in 1991, it was pretty flukey. You really shouldn't suspect success with a 4.8 K/9 in any era of baseball. A 1.52 K/BB rate wouldn't normally predict much success.
  21. For sure. Funny things happen when you jump into the middle of an arguement and miss the context.
  22. He doesn't look to have much left. But Sam Fuld...
  23. While I'll agree not all of those guys were top 15 pitchers and the term "Ace" is always going to come down to semantics, I agree with the premise. To win the World Series, you're going to have to field top end pitching unless you catch every break. Pitching is much more important to post season success. The Twins had Santana (who didn't seem to hold to the pressure of the post season) but they haven't had any other arm this century who could have led them to a title.
  24. Yes, I guess 5% is the number. I was thinking up to 10% is only finacial penalties but looks like that isn't the case. I wonder if that changed.
  25. Well that's what I meant when I said the Twins often promote based on seniority. It doesn't change the fact that although Wheeler has pitched very well, Berrios has pitched better.
