  1. Are Frazier and Meadows always going to be linked? They were connnected at the hip heading into the draft, and this isn't the first time I saw them ranked next to each other. BA had tem 48 and 49 I remember. I guess MLB is breaking them up a bit seperating them by three spots.
  2. I wish Wolfson would have pressed to see if he was talking about a mid-season deal or an off-season deal. Because if it was a mid-season deal, that's very un-Boras like and I'd have to give him credit on not pushing his cash-grab agenda on the player. I'm not interested in a mid-season, or off-season deal, but I can appreciate the unexpected, even if I anticipate this to be a ploy not in the Twins best interest.
  3. And I get it, sticking at SS with an average bat is a big upgrade over moving to 3B with a below average bat. Still, I take Manny Rameriz in LF and Eduardo Escobar at SS over Alan Trammel at SS and Chris Parmelee in LF. I wish I hadn't used Trammel as an example honestly, I always did like him as a player.
  4. They may all make it, but it seems like there are always a ton of SS rated highly. The position always seems to get overvalued due to the percieved defensive value. These guys do seem to have some bat to them, though I don't know that I'd rate them this high. Lindor, Russell and Crawford look to have league average to above league average bats, but none look to have any phenominal offensive tools. I'd be thrilled to have each and every one of these guys, however while I know it's not cool to say in this day and age, but I don't give much of a crap about defense or the position, get me the best bat, period. When you get to the MLB level, I'm not trading Manny Rameriz (69 WAR) for Alan Trammel (70 WAR). Prospect rankings and the criteria going into complex statistacl data are just too heavily weighted toward the position these days in my opinion.
  5. He does seem vindictive when he is less than enthused about players. Mike is right in that he does praise the few Twins prospects he likes, but if he doesn't like a guy, he does go out of his way to trash someone. I could care less if Vargas had gotten thrown out at 2B, I really only care that he made hard contact and knocked one off the wall. To be fair, I don't think he's picking on the Twins, and if Berrios is like 95% of other Twins pitchers, he likely isn't using his lower body enough, however, KLaw does seem to have some kind of complex where he thinks if he is going to write something unfavorable, he better be as derisive and snarky as possible just so the reader makes no mistake of his opinion.
  6. I didn't bring it up. Front office defenders allowed to discuss 1991 while front office nuetral commenters are not?
  7. Morris was still the top paid arm on the market that year and the Twins made him a top 5 paid pitcher in the league. He got paid more than Bob Welch, who the previous season just won 27 games, back when Wins were the most revered stat for pitchers. Tom Browning, Bud Black, Mike Boddicker, Danny Darwin, Charlie Liebrandt, Mike Witt, Zane Smith, Teddy Higuera, Dave Righetti, Goose Gossage, Charlie Hough, Floyd Bannister, Bill Kruger, John Candelaria and Fernando Valenzuela made up the rest of a pretty impressive free agent pitching crop in terms of performance and name recognition. Of course the fact that the Twins were willing to get the top free agent arm speaks volumes in itself.
  8. And to be fair, the front office did seem to learn from their history of inactivity this past offseason. They still might be underfunded, and they still might not be very good and they still might need to change personell, but there certainly seemed to be a concerted effort to get what was percieved to be better pitching talent, and get it early. The agressiveness was a welcomed change even if the results are similar and I'm happy to see they are willing to adapt from what wasn't working.
  9. When I heard people criticize Nick Punto back in the day, I always said that was on the management. He shouldn't have been a starter, particularly at 3B, but had the team kept him as a super utility player, he likely would have been one of the most beloved Twins despite his offensive shortcomings; see Al Newman and Denny Hocking. Same thing happened with Correia. He was out of position as the top free agent arm in 2013. Had it been one year later and the Twins had signed him (instead of Pelfrey) as the third arm behind Nolasco and Hughes, a high approval rating would probably be pretty universal.
  10. Good what if scenario's. Hunter left more because the Twins wouldn't give him the years though. The Angles did offer a lot of money, but the Twins only wanted to give him 3 years while the Angels offered 5. Additionally, it was reported that the Twins never actually made him an offer that offseason. I believe the expectation was that Ryan would look to extend Hunter after the 2006 season while he still had one season under team control. Hunter however wanted five or six years and Ryan only wanted three with the assumption that he may go to four. As the season got going, it became clear that Hunter was going to test free agency and the Twins likely weren't going to be the top bidder in terms of years. As Bill Smith didn't wan't to repeat the same messy situation with a star player playing a lame duck year he pulled the trigger on the Santana deal.
  11. No offense to Neal, but Meyer suddenly getting his pitch count bumped by 30 at the same time Nolasco hits the DL and right around the time the Twins will start to listen to offers for Correia speaks louder than anonymous sources. He's coming up, and he's coming up before August 31. If I was the Twins front office looking to move a veteran arm, I certainly don't want to give the impression that he's expendable because a top prospect is about to be promoted.
  12. He's the only one I can think of who is currently pitching. From a team's perspective, I don't particularly like the wait and see approach as it seems to be a terribly long-shot of a gamble and the payoff is only being able to play in a half-season's worth of extra games. However from a player's perspective, you have to do it. It's easy to talk surgery in an abstract way but if it's me getting knocked out and sawed open followed by months of not having a fully functional arm, I'm taking my sweet time making up my mind.
  13. Yes, if Suzuki likes it here he'll listen to the Twins offseason offer. If he doesn't like it here, he's not going to bite on a midseason extension anyway. I like Suzuki and would take him back next year, but considering he's having his best season at 31, the odds are that whoever does get him next year will be in for a pretty big let down. There's a reason he was a platoon player the last couple years. Also, if it happened to be the Cardinals who came after him, no one has to worry about him falling in love with St. Louis, they'll have no interest in a contract with him in 2015. Unless Yadier Molina gets hit by a bus in the offseason.
  14. Agreed, the Red Sox willingness to spend and the Twins unwillingness to do so is another great demerit to hold against the front office. However, bringing it up might derail the thread.
  15. One has to wonder if this happened after the All-Star break if it would motivate Ryan to shop Suzuki ASAP while working on a deal to bring in a still servicable name-brand veteran catcher. No way Suzuki gets moved and wears a different uniform at Target Field's All-Star game next week.
  16. That surely caught Boston by surprise. This gentleman has been in the league for merely 17 seasons. As far as I know, there have never been any questions about his demeanor on or off the field. How were they to know?
  17. Yes, that would seem unlikely. I was thinking of Aaron Thompson, the other journeyman lefty at Rochester. It's hard to keep all of Rochester's journeymen lefties straight. I predict he replaces Duensing while Johnson continues to start in Rochester.
  18. It's funny that Grampa Jake used that soft euphemism, but it's even funnier because that's probably the exact quote from Joe.
  19. That's a new one to me but Texans do seem to have their own lingo. They probably have their own unique racial epitaths as well.
  20. Anyone notice that Delmon is quitely having a pretty decent year as a platoon player?
  21. I agree, and while Gardy doesn't seem as willing to change his philosophy, I will give the front office some credit for changing things when they are no longer working. Previously I thought they were too stubborn to change, but they've advanced minor leaguers quicker, they've concentrated on power arms in the draft and they gave out multi-year deals in free agency. I always thought they would not do these things simply because they were bullheaded. I'm guessing Ryan and company have seen the disaster that was the reunion tour this year and may have second thoughts next year. Also, Rob Anthony was in charge when the rosters were set coming out of spring training. He seems to be more of a numbers guy than a baseball guy and may have leaned on Gardy for advice in putting the 25 man together. If Gardy had told Ryan that he wanted to bring Bartlett and Kubel north, Ryan may have told him no, though we'll never know.
  22. I'd like to think Parmelee hits well enough to be considered the front runner for a corner spot next year and Arcia turns it around and is a lock for the other. If those things don't happen, I bet the Twins do take a long look at Cuddyer this offseason. Had he not hurt his shoulder, he was well on his way to another multi-year deal. With the injury, he may only get one now. The Twins surely would be curious, though I wish they'd move on. There are a lot of ex-Twins on the market next year, Cuddyer, Torii Hunter, Francisco Liriano, JJ Hardy, Jesse Crain, Pat Neshak, AJ Pierzynski, Ryan Doumit, Alexi Casilla and Delmon Young are free agents while Denard Span has an option that will likely be declined and Nick Punto and LeTroy Hawkins have options that likely will be picked up. I have great some memories of all of those guys (yes, even Delmon) but I know that the enjoyment of a reunion almost always comes at the expense of development of a younger player.
  23. Deduno for a spot start is no big dea, however I bet it's Swarzak. Whoever gets the start probably won't throw again until Friday, but Deduno has already been off since last Friday the 4th. That's a long break to give him and keep him riding the pine with nothing to do. Swarzak on the other hand last pitched Sunday the 6th, a lay off until Friday would actually coincide with Nolasco's usual rotation spacing.
  24. Sano rehabbing at the MLB level would be a total surprise, I can't see any situation where that happens since he'll be lucky if he's even able to play simulated games by then, but that is a nice bold prediction. The Hicks non-call-up I'd agree with also. The Twins have refused to call up guys in their dog house the last several years. My guess: C-Suzuki 1B-Mauer 2B-Dozier SS-Escobar 3B-Plouffe LF-Arcia CF-Santana RF-Parmelee DH-Colabello Be-Fuld Be-Romero Be-Florimon Be-Fryer SP-Hughes SP-Gibson SP-Meyer SP-May SP-Pino RP-Perkins RP-Burton RP-Swarzak RP-Pressly RP-Deduno RP-Thielbar RP-Hoffman Trade: Willingham, Morales, Correia, Duensing, Fein Call ups: Pinto, Herrmann, Achter, Tonkin, Iberra, Johnson and Vargas I'm probably in the minority and hope they sell high on Suzuki as I don't believe he's as good as he appears now, but I think they'll get suckered in due to his strong clubhouse presence, which in fairness, does have some value.
