  1. Many managers (perhaps dictated by higher ups) would have had him pitch an inning or two at the start of the game just because they wanted to make sure he got to pitch. It seems to me the Twins have done this many times, though mostly with rehab assigments. Not that I care much about the decision or the results. But what's up with E-ton? Even if the weathermen in Tennessee are terrible, couldn't the umps just look up? It started raining four outs later after the first pitch! They must really think highly of their concession food if they were just trying to keep the fans in the gate to make some extra cash.
  2. With 200K + to throw at the HS kids, at least one of them has got to bite. Assuming the money doesn't stay in the bank.
  3. Willingham would get a team's top 25 prospect. In a deep Twins farm system we're talking about a Niko Goodrum, Mason Melotakis, Felix Jorge, Zack Jones or Aaron Slegers. A team in need isn't going to stop one of those fringy guys from holding up a deal for Willingham. It will depend on his health and production obviously, but I'll bet the team can snag something in the 8-15 range depending on desperation. Of course that's assuming the Twins don't try to do another stupid 2-for-1 deal, taking on a couple of "MLB ready" AAAA players who both require 40-man spots. Then I'd prefer they just let Willingham walk at the end of the season.
  4. I don't care how bad the stop gap is, this team is going to stink until the prospects arrive anyway. And that's saying nothing about them actually panning out. The degree to which they stink really shouldn't be a concern unless the suits think winning 72 games is going to put more people in the stands than winning 70 games. And frankly, that should not be a concern in the least, putting a team together that can win a WS should.
  5. Well it was more a condescending remark about the quality of the IT people they hired, but it was pretty dumb of me to imply tech school IT people are subpar, I know they're not. I probably should have stuck to something factual and less offensive like, Texans are idiots.
  6. Two years ago the Twins traded Francisco Liriano to the White Sox at the deadline, three years ago they traded Delmon Young to the Tigers and five years ago they traded for Carl Pavano from the Indians. I'd say the Twins aren't too concerned trading within the division. The Twins do have players the Royals need, but two vets for prospects doesnt usually happen. Usually you get better value if you split them up. I could see the Royals being interested in Plouffe, who could play 3B or RF. However I'd think the Twins would be more interested in moving Willingham.
  7. Why would anyone try Ortiz in CF when clearly Chris Parmelee is available to chase down gappers?
  8. Yeah, I sell anyone over 30 starting now and listen on anyone over 27. There are, and will be holes when you make trades, but it's not like this team hasn't been dealing with roster holes all year long due to injuries and poorly planned 25-man decisions.
  9. Well it sounds to me that the only issue was not having the latest Norton Anti-virus to prevent the spyware that got into the system. I thought it implied that outside deviants were just easily able to get in. I didn't think anyone internal was to blame. Except for the programmers they hired out of the local tech school.
  10. That was great. It was particularly interesting that the Astros front office had info about other teams that I don't believe the media had. Like the fact that the rockies bid $62 million on Abreu and the fact that the Royals told them they expect their payroll to be $85 million next year. Maybe that stuff was public knowledge but generally it isn't. I'm sure people speculated about the Royals payroll, but when does a front office ever tell their fanbase what their payroll is going to be going into free agency? So either teams are freely telling other clubs about this stuff, trusting them not to leak it and not caring about losing any competitve edge by keeping this stuff to themselves, or the front offices have better moles within eachother's organizations than the media does.
  11. For my money, not a damn thing. I want them to improve next year's team and the year after. I'm not trading prospects, no matter how fringy, to improve this year's dumpster fire. We knew this team was going to struggle coming into the season, the fact that they surprised us for three months was nice, but they're back to meeting expectations.
  12. Interesting title to the thread. I hope that Murphy's effort is now without question as he could be a steal in the 9th round. This is what Jim Callis had to say about him predraft: "The problem guys have with him is that he plays beneath the tools a little bit. People don't love the approach and wonder about the bat. But he has the tools to do some things."
  13. "To make room on the active roster, the Twins optioned Pedro Florimonto Triple-A Rochester and also optioned 20-year-old Jorge Polanco back to Class A Advanced Fort Myers. " We sure they just didn't get their plane tickets mixed up?
  14. Well Florimon of course.
  15. Right, but this could be done in November. It's possible, but I'd say the odds are against it. Even if he continues this unlikely pace, he's still not going to price himself out of the Twins pocketbook, not even close. I'd take this risk for these bigger payoffs.
  16. But why would it ever be too late? Suzuki is not a guy who would ever be out of the Twins price range in free agency. In fact, paying him now would likely mean paying more than he'll receive as a free agent as he is playing over his head right now. An expected 2nd half decline would likely correct his current market price.
  17. Diversification is great, but if your draft, FA, DFA and trade roster spots are used respectively on Chris Parmelee, Mike Pelfrey, Sam Fuld and Vance Worley, you're still sitting in the basement. It's great to use all avenues to build a team, but it's more important to use the avenues well. Getting elite talent regardless of the method is more important.
  18. If the Twins are selling, that means they are out of it, so what if they are thin at catcher for the remainder of a losing season? If they like what they have in Suzuki, trade him then re-sign him in the off-season. If he can bring back a nice player or two it seems silly to hold on to him simply because you want to be the first team to negotiate with him in the off-season. If they want him back, surely they can make him aware of that upon the trade. If he wants to play in Minnesota next year, why wouldn't he want the team to try to increase the talent level to play alongside of him?
  19. Well the injuries would clearly make any team scramble, but half the issue is that Florimon was never at the end of the roster, he was pegged to be the opening day starter. No one would accuse the team of having poor depth, even if injuries did occur, had they had a better SS plan to begin with. Or a better CF plan, or any kind of plan that didn't involve 13 pitchers.
  20. Well, I think we'd probably be best off assuming the worst about the future of the MLB staff until we start seeing results at that level. This is happening way too often.
  21. I think that ship has sailed. Assuming Joe's offensive troubles are going to correct themselves simply because of another position change sounds more like superstition if there is no reasonable data to back it up.
  22. I'd like to say he's going to take up pitching again, but seeing as he'll be out of options before that's beneficial to the Twins, that'll never happen in one of their uniforms. So instead I'll say he gets rabies.
  23. I'd hope Polanco's development or position is impacted not at all by Vielma. Few things bother me as much as the notion that no-hit shortstops are an acceptable lineup option, especially when they are a no-hit shortstop in A ball.
  24. I'd hate to pile onto your club's woes, but I really hope Burdi doesn't stay there long. Perhaps only a handful of outings before heading off to Ft. Myers. Though hopefully the Kernals would get Gonsalves or even Cederoth before too long.
  25. I'm guessing he's talking about Marco Gonzalez who is being called up right out of AA and only a year and two weeks removed from being drafted. Something is off with Meyer and he does look like he needs to get something right in Rochester. However his struggles and his AAA numbers have a very similar look to what was going on with Shelby Miller when the Cardinals surprisingly called him up two years ago just when his luster was starting to wear off.
