  1. I don't want a platoon partner. But even so, it's not Bader vs Martin. It's Bader vs Castro/Martin/Helman/Keirsey/E-Rod/whatever is floating around on the waiver wire. The inflexibility they are causing the roster for a guy who can't help offensively is the issue. And why are the Twins paying him more than Grichuk, Laureano and Hayes? They are all better hitters than him. It almost seems like the Twins once again waited too long and then found themselves in a bind and got taken advantage of because of it.
  2. We can have a difference of opinion, but you're just being stubborn if you refuse to recognize that half of us think that giving a guy who cannot hit 6M and a guaranteed roster spot, making it that much less flexible, is absolutely not improving the team.
  3. I'll take Castro over Bader. And I'll take any sliver of potential with Martin, Kiersey or Helman. They can all be sent packing when they don't perform. Those guys never get much leash. Call up the REAL prospects next. If none of them pan out, you only missed out on an unproductive veteran player anyway. I seriously don't care about subpar defense from the 2nd option in CF. I care that this team for years signs these kinds of players and then acts stunned when they are the worst team in the league at driving in runs with guys in scoring position. That is 10x more frustrating than not catching an extra line drive once a week.
  4. And Martin can be optioned and will be benched if he doesn't hit. Heck, I wouldn't put it past them to DFA him. He's not the only option. Maybe none are attractive, but when the bird in the hand is proven unable to hit, I'll take the two or three or four in the bush.
  5. But in what way is he competent? Certainly not with the bat? Because that leads to the next question: Is he really going to be a backup? History says he's going to get more PA than Buxton. Just give the PAs to the young guys. Maybe you'll get lucky. There is no pot of gold to be had with Bader though. Playing to the floor instead of the ceiling is what kills this team every single season.
  6. I'd guess the anti-Bader crowd has a large overlap with the anti-WAR crowd. I'm in that Venn Diagram at least. If you can't find good players, give me players you can option or have no qualms DFA'ing. I don't want bad players, that this team will never cut, clogging up the roster all year. Again.
  7. He's getting paid 6M. He's going to be more than a late inning defensive replacement. In fact with veteran Max Kepler gone, barring injury, I'd put my money on him having at least the 3rd most PA of any outfielder for the Twins this year. This team does not sign veteran players and let them sit on the bench for more than one game at a time.
  8. Prior to last year, Margot was a better hitter than Bader pretty much every season. This guy cannot hit. His OPS has been under .660 each of the last three seasons.
  9. Which is why I didn't care for them to sign any free agents. They didn't have to sign guys just to sign guys. And MAT was not good in 2023. He had a 35% K rate and a .278 OBP. I know many people didn't notice at the time, but he was a huge offensive black hole. It made zero sense why Joey Gallo was such a dog but people were singing MATs praises. They were the SAME player.
  10. I don't think ownership is an issue in this case. I get that there is a large percentage of fans that want the back up CF to be a glove first player. It's fair, it's just not what I want. But those guys are cheap regardless of ownership's prerogative. Even the Pirates can afford to pay defensive only players. There just aren't enough offensive capable CFs in the league; if you can hit and play a passable CF, you're going to be a starter. With Buxton often injured, I want a guy with a bat to be the backup option, even if he turns the stomach of the defensive crowd. And if you can't get the surefire bat, give me anybody with the upside for a impact bat. So at this point, I'm OK going with Castro as the backup. I don't have high hopes for Martin, but at least there is a hint of potential. Of course the real goal is for E-Rod to be that guy. Signing a vet like Bader is going to significantly reduce that chance.
  11. The goal shouldn't be to improve on Margot, it should be to avoid putting this type of player on the field. I have no interest in Austin Martin getting 400 PA, but even his bat is a better option than Bader.
  12. Ugh, well there goes 400 PA to a guy who can't hit. Offense is taking a step back and the offense is what was the biggest concern this offseason.
  13. It's tough. My kids are going to grow up hating their grandparents generation for setting society back a century, and they're going to hate my generation because we didn't stop it; we're all talk but no action.
  14. I don't know, if Grichuk is the only example, I don't think that I'd have much to quibble about. Yeah, I can see a Grichuk fit, but I don't see any other position players or starters I'd have any interest in at 5M.
  15. I really think it has less to do with the defender than the situational offense. I'm sure opposing teams make a cursory study of the defenders, but the 3B coach is going to send the runner based WAY more on the speed of the runner, the angle the ball is traveling, the number of outs, the inning, the score and who is on deck more than he's going to factor in who's in right field. How many such plays are we talking about, two, three dozen a season? We're working off of pretty small sample sizes.
  16. Agree, but thus far there aren't rules against pinch hitting. Though Baldelli sure seems to be pushing it to the point where the league may WANT to make a rule about it.
  17. They should do this anyway. Very slim chance he's going to make the 26-man roster at this point anyway.
  18. It will turn out fine. The billionaires will have already milked as much money as they could out of the sports before they collapse. So we don't need to worry ourselves, they will all be OK.
  19. Yeah, and the guy lost 74K betting on other sports? Even if he wasn't betting on baseball, how long until someone with this intel leverages that growing debt over his head to throw a game?
  20. I don't think LOOGYs have a place in the game any longer. IF they miss getting the left handed hitter out, they're forced to stay in there to get slaughtered against the right handed hitters. You HAVE to be able to get either handed hitter out. Checking splits.......OK, yeah, I like this one.
  21. We've seen the big dead money hits for terrible contracts of players the teams didn't want any more, like Brock Oswieler, so doing that with Watson makes sense. Seems like an unreasonable ask for a 1st ballot HOFer who's still at his peak though.
  22. Yeah, 36M in dead money? Ouch. The Browns wouldn't even bench Watson when he was terrible, they're not going to eat 36M to trade their best player. And yes the Browns are a terrible, dysfunctional franchise, but I doubt ANY team would do that, at least for a star player.
  23. I'm really happy with what Larnach did last year. But he's been at the MLB level for four seasons now and he just isn't a consistent hitter. I'm Ok selling high on him, because the next time he goes in a half season slump I don't think his value will ever recover.
  24. Well, it was a nice run by the Chiefs. Pointless in arguing with the Raiders long history of impactful coaching decisions though.
