  1. It's hard to be predictive of clutch stats, and these figures seem to be the only numbers that really corallate to the Twins win total. If it's some kind of physical adjustment or game plan that is causing the Twins to hit better with runners in scoring position and late in games, then they probably can continue winning. If it's luck or chance then you'd think things would even out. If it's some other intangible aspect that causes the players to intensify their focus or abilities in clutch situations, then it may be able to continue. Of course if it's that third thing, we may need to look into why they can't perform like that in non-critical situations.
  2. Or the mess caused by the first Stauffer decision.
  3. By promoting and keeping young players that chase too many pitches, who then strikeout too much and walk not enough, I really hope it isn't encouraging other young minor leaguers to be hackers. Swinging a bat and hitting a round ball is a skill that is hard to teach. NOT swinging at a ball should be much easier to coach into a player, yet, here we are. If these guys can't control their impulses to swing at everything, get them to a doctor who will diagnose them with ADHD and get them on some Ritalin. The only batters I know who get/got an Adderall/Ritalin exception: Adam LaRoache, Shane Victorino, Carlos Ruiz, Chris Davis and Andres Torres. Every one of them can take a walk. Edit: I'm kidding of course. Unless you agree with me, then I'm totally serious.
  4. I can understand not wanting to tie up the DH spot with a full-time player when there are so many young OF and corner IF prospects at AA-AAA and the MLB level. What I can't understand: 1. How it is Nunez/Bernier that affects Vargas' role. 2. How the organization didn't see this coming. If needing the DH spot for the rotation of the nearly a dozen possible players who are on the team or may be on the team this summer meant not having a full-time DH, doesn't that mean Vargas only being up for a month an a half was basically inevitable? If he has no role going forward, why wasn't he shopped? 3. Reality TV.
  5. Lucky not to get a concussion from that. He must not have played hockey as a kid.
  6. At the minor league level there aren't any dependable stats to verify that assumption. Which brings us back to relying on Jokin's, or someone else's, eye-witness evaluation.
  7. I just assumed it was because he couldn't get on base. The team really seems to be dragging this inevitable conclusion out. I don't think there is any scenario outside of multiple OF 60-Day DL situations that doesn't end with a Schafer DFA. I'm sure he sees it coming too. The team isn't getting anything for him, just pull the band aid now and let him try to latch on somewhere else.
  8. I think it was just a matter of needing someone, and his schedule working out. We got a bit excited about Polanco's MLB call up last year. Not only was it short lived, he still hasn't been promoted to AAA despite much to complain about.
  9. Good stuff, but no way would the Twins let Bergman or any other player start in AA. Nearly everyone starts in Rookie ball, even the guys who were facing better talent in the SEC regularly. Maybe they get aggressive and let a guy play Low A. Maybe.
  10. Jordan Schafer I believe is the name you're looking for. Gary Brown was made available also. Perhaps the Twins could put together an All-Star group of BA's biggest CF busts this decade. Byron Buxton is not allowed to join that band.
  11. There has never been any substantial evidence and certainly nothing confirmed, that the Twins even offered Hunter a contract. Any rumor suggesting so says the Twins offered three, maybe four years, something the Angels topped. When Hunter continually said he wanted a long term deal because he didn't want to deal with trade speculations every other year (which kept occurring after signing his initial extension) his issue seems pretty clear, he wanted security in the length of the deal. The Twins weren't offering that.
  12. That's their current stadium, I forgot it got renamed. AT&T Park was also Pac Bell park when I went and US Cellular was the New Comiskey Park when I saw it. Guess I may be a bit outdated with some of my stadiums.
  13. I think you're overestimating the front office if you think they'd use OPS to evaluate a hitter. If that .700 OPS comes with a .265 avg, a .340 OBP and passable defense, I don't think the front office bumps Hicks, even if Buxton is lighting it up.
  14. AT&T Park Fenway Target Field Busch Stadium Kauffman Wrigley Miller New Comiskey Arlington Stadium Minute Maid I loved Fenway, but was less impressed with Wrigley. Maybe if I'd seen it after some updates. Both parks were old, and I love historic places, but Fenway was old but with a noticeable effort put into keeping the place fresh and relevant. Wrigley was old and there seemed to be little to no effort made on that upkeep. Pretty much summed up the franchise for most of it's run it seemed to me. Why make an effort to make the park nice or the team watchable when fans will show up to get drunk in our bleachers anyway?
  15. He might be done, but it's only three innings since his return from injury and only seven innings total. If we judged the whole staff on their first seven innings, Tommy Milone would still be on the roster and the only member of the original rotation not DFA'd or optioned.
  16. Clearly the Twins are out-performing expectations, but I have to think projections will be less accurate when trying to predict the collective outcome of say 45 players as opposed to 35. In other words, the Twins have had and will have lots of turnover, and with more players suiting up, there are going to be more variables available to mess up any predictions.
  17. Dozier's deal will be about over by the time a 2015 draft pick comes up for the Twins. I could buy into the idea of not drafting a SS if you already had a young elite SS already performing at the MLB level. However as much as I like Santana, he's nowhere close to a promised solution. I'd hesitate if the Twins had a young Tulowitzki, A-Rod or Jeter type. Santana is nowhere near that, neither is Gordon or Polanco. And again, Plouffe's deal will be about over by the time a 2015 draft pick comes up, and while I'm a believer in Sano sticking at 3B, I'm not putting ALL my eggs in that basket. I'm not really a BPA guy for the MLB draft, mainly because I think it's pretty impossible to make that determination between pitchers and batters as those guys have absolutely no usefull skillsets to compare, but if a SS is what appears to be the best elite talent, hell ya, take him. That being said, I don't think that about Bergman.
  18. The Twins would have to eat his contract. Anyone who picked him up after he cleared waivers and refused an assignment would mearly have to pay him the pro rated league minimum salary for the rest of the season. I'm happy Milone is pitching well in AAA, maybe it will fool another club who needs a starter. It's not fooling me though and I hope it's not fooling the front office either. There are plenty of things Milone will be able to accomplish in AAA that he cannot at the MLB level. Making terrible Tiger farmhands swing and miss at an 85 MPH fastball seems to be one of them.
  19. I'm sure most folks here agree. My hypothetical is supposing what the front office will do. I don't think they make room for him if all the current roadblocks are playing well (and winning).
  20. If Hunter continues to hit, and whatever combinaiton of Hicks/Arcia/Vargas/Rosario show that they belong, then what? In the hypothetical situation where injuries and production are not an issue for Hunter and the kids, does the club promote Buxton even if he's tearing it up in the minors?
  21. I would think there is going to be some regression, but the AL Central offenses aren't very impressive. Chicago and Cleveland have issues and KC is playing over their head. A team BB% of 5.7% is second worst in baseball along with their team BABIP of .322 kind of implies they are due for regression as well. I'd guess the Twins pitching will start looking like we expect them to, but the results might be different simply because the competition isn't great. Oh, but the strikeouts are still a huge problem.
  22. Both have some exciting aspects but both are long shots, Walker in particular. It's been four years now and his approach at the plate isn't improving. We can all drool over his power and pretend it doesn't matter if he can't get on base, but it does. The Twins will never put this guy in a MLB uniform except for a token call up if he doesn't miraculously change. He simply isn't going to be given a chance to prove anyone right or wrong, which sucks, but is life for minor leaguers who refuse to take pitches off the plate. Most teams will eventually give a shot to a guy like Harrison if he continually shows nice contact skills, even if his power is underwhelming.
  23. Of course no team could dare cut the anthem now. I can only imagine the radioactive hate cloud that would rain down upon a club from certain news outlets.
  24. WAR punishes first basemen as it is.
