  1. DFA'd by the Braves. Any interest in trying him instead of Robinson and/or Schaffer? He's shown the ability to take some walks, which still isn't nearly enough to make up for his inability to get hits. He's one of the better threats on the basepaths, but my opinion is that steals are more a symptom of the system you play in. Molitor hasn't shown much interest in running, it's doubtful Young would have the greenlight like he did in Colorado when he lead the league in steals. Doesn't seem like much of an upgrade, however every time the Twins bring in a journeyman 4th (really 6th) OF, he starts off hot as hell. See Sam Fuld, Jordan Schaffer last fall and Shane Robinson this spring.
  2. This is true, and going from 65 innings to 165 innings isn't bright, but any rules about how many innings you need under your belt before you can advance is self imposed. He doesn't actaully NEED to have X ammount of innings in Fort Myers. After all, Gonsalves was only at 65 innings last year because he had to start his year in the short-season leagues. Kohl Stewart on the other hand was at 87 innings last year, because he got to go straight to Cedar Rapids even though Gonsalves was arguably better in 2013 and by all accounts, a more refined and experienced HS pitcher. Gonsalves getting picked in the 4th round as opposed to the 1st round looks to have directly affected his promotion scale.
  3. So we're: 1) concerned about how the Twins are comfortable to let a weak bat hit in the 5 hole. 2) concerned Mauer doesn't have the power or OBP to stay in the #3 spot 3) concerned that Mauer's recent proclivaty for (only) hitting with men on base may be squandered in the #2 hole which probably profiles as his best fit if not for his clutch stats. Seems to me there's a pretty obvious solution and an answer as to where he could/should hit, even if unconventional.
  4. Before it was being rumored that the Twins were locked into Stewart if Appel, Gray and Bryant didn't fall, Meadows was one of the big names expected to be considered by the Twins. I wonder if recently drafting Buxton and the disgusting state of the starting pitching depth had anything to do with them choosing Stewart. For the record, I preferred Stewart if none of the big three fell. He was projected to be a high velocity, strikeout pitcher with a killer slider. If the front office misses on this one, they're going to have lots of company. Stewart was probably one of the few recent draft picks that was supported by most pundits and Twins fans. http://twinsdaily.com/topic/5749-potential-2013-twins-draft-pick-kohl-stewart/ Thumbs up to kab21 who was a bit more hesitant than the rest of us. Thumbs Down to Jim Callis who though Stewart had a chance to fast track to the MLB by 2015.
  5. Plus, they'll spend money. The team might look better if Cole Hammels and Jay Bruce are playing for them in August.
  6. I thought they had/have one more year left, but only because I thought the rest of the division would stink
  7. May was a mess last year when he got called up anyway. My feeling has been that for the most part, rookies are going to struggle upon a callup to the majors and it's largely unavoidalbe no matter how much prep they get down on the farm. If your team stinks, let them struggle when the games don't matter.
  8. Can we get that in writing and notorized?
  9. I would normally agree, as a bullpen game sounds pretty awful unless Perkins goes 9. On the other hand, the Twins got shut out for the first time since April and only managed 3 and 2 runs the other two games. An actual power threat off the bench may have been of use during one or two of those games.
  10. I can understand not calling up youngsters to work out issues at the MLB level if it might cost the team important wins. This year there is good reason not to just that. I'd say years past would have been a great opportunity to get young guys up and running and as close to their competitive best for when the actual meaningful games began.
  11. But doesn't his continued improvement at the MLB level show he could have learned the same things at the highest level?
  12. I know it's not news as most people have noticed, but (knock one wood) Trevor May is not walking guys. His control was supposed to be his big, glaring, He'll-Have-To-Move-To-The-Bullpen bugaboo. Obviously things can change, but his walk rate does not look like it's going to be half the issue that was advertised. I think this shows that it is more than possible that these guys can work out their kinks at the MLB level, particularly if the organization's best pitching coach is sitting in the dugout next to you.
  13. If Milone and Pelfrey are pitching well while Nolasco is out, I'd bet Nolasco finds himself in the pen. Hughes is a lock for the rotation no matter what and despite the fact that I give the front office a hard time about cultivating younger players at the MLB level, I think they see that no matter what happens from here, May and Gibson need to be left alone for the sake of the future.
  14. So MLB pitchers are too stubborn to make a rookie chase pitches even though any kind of analysis will tell them they can strike him out throwing pitches off the plate consistantly? Even if a few were that obtuse, they only would be the first time they face him.
  15. Yes, but worse yet is if Varfas gets recalled. If he is, why was he ever sent down?
  16. If this team isn't going to clear a 40-man spot for the second best relief pitcher in the organization, they better not do it for a guy who would never see a pitch over the plate at the MLB level and still strike out every other at bat.
  17. I don't like this yo-yoing of young players. I think the front office is fooling themselves if they think they're going to rebuild the club by identifying the next generation of talent with random month-long call ups that may or may not result in everyday at bats.
  18. Yeah love the power, but he's got nothing else.
  19. I'm hoping for the best, but I think expecting a Jamie Moyer/Mark Buehrle out of him is a very long shot. I'm sure others will say we don't have to set the bar that high, but with a guy like Milone, you really do, there is no margin of error for these kind of guys and I can't imagine there's a middle ground. It's going to either be really good or really bad.
  20. I'd normally agree, but I don't know that you can tell much about a guy long term from only 4-6 weeks. I do believe you could kill a guy's trade value in that time though. I wouldn't normally advocate trading prospects like this but I really think a lot of these guys are going to get squandered. The better the team is, the less likely they will be to let young players take their lumps at the MLB level.
  21. I agree, and I'd rather target a catcher. Still, you don't always have to get the best end of a deal for it to still be a good deal. Even if Kepler, Harrison, Arcia or whomever gets traded for an asset that improves the Twins less than the improvement the other team gets from the Twins prospect, the Twins still improved the team. Better to get something than nothing, which will happen if the Twins sit on these guys and never give them a chance like Michael Restovich, Michael Ryan and Garrett Jones.
  22. You mean he's not already in the system? You'd think drafting 95% relief pitchers in 2 of the past 3 drafts would almost guarantee that.
  23. It wouldn't be a travesty, but perhaps at times unnecessary. A lot of teams are starting to promote these guys quickly as they are seeing so many pitchers peak early and fade away by their late 20s.
  24. I would totally dangle Stewart and see who bites. He actually might be the perfect bait. I can acknowledge that it's too early to give up on him, but if he finishes the year with this current futile strikeout rate in A ball, he might not even be a top 100 prospect. I like Gonsalves and Hu better now and even the injured Thiroe. I'd be OK if another team still values him and have no problem if he latter proved me wrong.
  25. I agree, not sure an NL team would though.
