  1. The Twins send just about every college pitcher to the Rookie Leagues even if it is lesser completion than the big time college conferences. Maybe Jay gets an exception simply because they'll still use him as a reliever this year. I'd be surprised if Cody does.
  2. Right, but almost certainly due to the everyday wear and tear an athlete suffers. The body won't last, your name sake is a testament to that. Mick had to retire at 36.
  3. I simply think we all got accustomed to the steroid era. Guys peaking in their mid to late 20's shouldn't be surprising. It's what used to be the norm. Frank Robinson famously was traded to the Orioles because at 30 the Reds thought he was getting toward the end of the line. It is a well known anecdote not only because the Reds were wrong, but because Frank defied expectations. Most of the great HOFers peaked in their 20's and were able to ride out their careers with much less spectacular numbers, and while some were still great hitters, most rode it out by still being a power threat. Guys with some power can still be useful even once their reactions slow and their bodies break down. Joe doesn't have power. When his reactions slow and body ages, he has little else to fall back on. Joe looks very much like this eras Don Mattingly, a guy who everyone said was a sure fire HOFer until he reached his 30's.
  4. I'd turn the sound down if you plan on watching the games on TV. Vegas has the over/under on Dick/Bert mentioning the Hunter ejection at 3.5 per game.
  5. I liked it, not sure if it was great leadership, but I'd bet it fired up the few young guys on the roster. And from the angle of the Twins only signing Hunter to put fans in the seats, that show probably sold more tickets than any of the other sad experiences that took place on that field over the previous 26 innings.
  6. How much did his jersey cost? That's how much he should be fined.
  7. I wasn't counting on them winning this year, none of us were. It is/was a pleasant surprise, but I don't want to see the development of the young guys stunted because the team desperately wants to chase a winning record. Winning in the comming years may be expected IF the young guys develop, but they won't develop if they are getting yanked up and down, or even simply kept down past the point where they should be at the MLB level. I'm not saying all or any of these guys are past that point, just that the club really has to be carefull.
  8. I think he is special, I just think his one flaw, his inability to lay off pitches, is an insurmountable achilles heel. He's got to at least partially cover that issue up or all his talent will be wasted. And he does have tons of talent, more than nearly any other prospect. It's a crack in the dam that can't go unchecked. This shouldn't be a surprise though, it's nothing new, we see the inverse happen all the time. The Twins have had tons of pitchers in the system with great velocity, a killer slider and good offspeed stuff, but they never make it because they can't pitch IN the zone. It should be much easier to fix the hitter though as he is the reactionary part of the equation. All he has to do is, well, do nothing. Stand still and keep the bat on his shoulder more. It's kind of frustrating. It's like a smoker saying they can't stop, even though the act of getting into the car, driving to the gas station and buying a pack takes a ton more effort than sitting on your couch and doing nothing. Fight the urge!
  9. Right, but their lack of trust in Stauffer is pretty justifiable based on his performance. Their lack of trust in Graham seems to be completely due to his inexperience, as he has performed well. Lack of trust in young players due to inexperience seems to speak to a much larger problem, which is only going to get exhasperated going forward.
  10. With the lack of skepticism about Polanci's one game call up, I'm going to assume most folks only read the first sentence of Seth's post and got too excited to read much more than the second. Polanco knows how to take a pitch, many of the other young Twins don't. Keep him up, let him bat low in the order until he gets acclimated and you might have found a solution to the #2 spot in the lineup before long.
  11. It was pathetic if you ask me. Should have happened the first game of the series instead
  12. So is it against the rules or just frowned upon to send the late round HS picks some pot and hookers and then send the NCAA some pics of the party? I think they'd be easier to sign if they got their college offers pulled. Seems like a grey area to me.
  13. I love all the day 3 HS picks. Even if signing them are long shots, the normal college guys drafted in rounds 20 or later are probably even longer shots and with much less upside.
  14. I want Walker to work out, it would be fantastic if he did. But as it sits, the only time he'd see a pitch over the plate at the MLB level is when the pitcher misses badly. He's just not willing to take a pitch; the other numbers are moot as long as that's the case. It always seems strange to me, that some guys just cannot help themselves and swing at everything even when their career is on the line and at least somewhat dependant on having a modicum of patience. If the team has told Walker that he needs to work on not chasing pitches, and you'd have to assume they have, yet he continually shows no improvement, that tells me he has poor impulse control. If so, he should get checked for ADHD, perhaps proper medication could even him out. Not that I in anyway am advocating for unnecessary medication. And not that I'm a doctor.
  15. Probably because Aaron Thompson is doing his damnedest in June to make Duensing look like the second best lefty in the pen. He's still failing.
  16. I hope this is more permanent than one game. This offense is stagnant, all non-essential personnel should be on notice, the Lookouts are coming, and in waves.
  17. I'd caution anyone against looking at the Twins 2008 draft. Though I guess they did pretty well with George Springer and Kolten Wong.
  18. To me he sounds like Chris Parmelee and Dalton Hicks, two guys who had questionable hit tools but actually could. In the minors anyhow.
  19. Well the last month was pretty impressive and vintage Sano. I think we're all going to be disappointed if we plan on waiting to call up prospects until they have no question marks.
  20. Me too. This team needs to start seeing some results at the MLB level soon though. So many power armed relievers in the past four drafts and still nothing.
  21. I like the upside of both picks. Considering the home park, I'm not a fan of chasing LH power though. The team probably didn't, I'm just replying to the comments.
  22. Basically the whole Lookout squad. How can the Twins possibly give Kepler, Harrison, Buxton, Sano, Polanco, Santana, Pinto, Vargas, Rosario, Arcia and Hicks all 450-500 consistant MLB at bats to evaluate them all? And those are just the higher valued prospects only a year or so away. Most teams would welcome the chance to give Daniel Ortiz, James Beresford or Dalton Hicks a fair look. Those guys will get lucky to even get a token September call up. Something has to give, don't let these guys go to waste.
  23. The Twins have drafted and developed two ace pitchers since they moved to this state. Pretty sad indictment if you ask me. I could accept an arguement that Dave Boswell would have been a third. Still, no aces since Viola in 1981 with the next best, the good but not great Brad Radke, all the way back in 1991.
  24. I like Cody if they give him a chance to start. I'd guess they would.
  25. There you have it, Brock said Ryan is a huge mistake!
