  1. They seem less risky when the slide doesn't appear to be an attempt to either belly-flop second or pick up a pretty rock you see while traversing on your stomach. For the athlete that he is, he looks extremely uncoordinated when he tries to slide.
  2. I kind of think SS arm strength is a little over-rated, mostly because even on the few occasions where the additional velocity actually will get the out, all we're talking about is an infield hit or possibly not getting the back end of a double play. An outfielder with a weak arm might let a guy get to 2nd, 3rd or score. An infielder with a weak arm, in almost all scenarios, is giving up what amounts to a walk. I'd guess a pitcher who has a 3.5 BB/9 as opposed to a pitcher who has a 2.5 BB/9 would end up allowing more baserunners than a SS with a below average arm. And I don't get too riled up over a 3.5 BB/9. Of course I'm talking about arm strength; accuracy is a different scenario.
  3. Not that any excuses would need to be made, but one would also have to think that even if it's only 15 days, Buxton will more than the typical few games on rehab assignment. Let's see if he can take what he learned at the MLB level and dominate Rochester.
  4. I wouldn't doubt they're willing to trade him, however I doubt a mere three months is going to lower the asking price from Tijuan Walker to Adam Walker.
  5. Especially since Espinosa was as disappointing the last two years as Desmond has been this year.
  6. Pelfrey. Milones 86 MPH heater doesn't really work in the pen. Works OK at Rochester though.
  7. We shouldn't expect rookies to come up and dominate. Historically rookies struggle. Teams have to ride out the roller coaster first. Letting rookies get their feet wet would be easier to stomach if they are called up when the team already stinks.
  8. Hurrah! Finally someone in the pen who can top 95!
  9. No one has ever accepted a QO before. Seems to me most guys tend to prefer a 3/30 kind of deal over the one year QO. Maybe he's different.
  10. He's a free agent after this year. No matter how much he stinks this year, the Nats will still give him a QO knowing he'll turn it down since he almost certainly can still get a multi year deal based on his track record. So the Twins at the very least would have to give up something equal in value to a QO.
  11. And personally I don't much care for WHiP as it gives a measly walk the same weight as a HR.
  12. I don't think inclusion on the 49-man should be a prerequisite, I see some spots that could be replaced.
  13. The Twins bullpen has a 15.9% K rate. That's 1.5% less than the next worst club.
  14. I agree, but leading with an anecdote is pretty common when describing little known people. The led on Max Kepler is still that he comes from Germany. I don't like the organizational quotes about "bloodlines" either as I feel there is way too much weight placed on them. Hard to say if that actually affected his draft position at all. I tend to think it didn't considering the first three picks in this year's draft were all SS. Rodgers was a prep SS and went 3rd, I'm not sure he was any more impressive as a HS player than Gordon. His stats sure weren't.
  15. Before yesterday, I was going to suggest hitting him #2. I started thinking that making him sit on the bench until the 3rd to bat probably was only helping to build up the knot in his stomach. Batting him leadoff seemed to work as well.
  16. Looking at his career numbers may not be as impressive, but anyone who paid attention to baseball at the time probably remembers that the hype surrounding him and what he did in is first few full seasons was huge. The speed comp is probably fair, Davis didn't have as many triples, but that's probably in part because more of his gap hits cleared the fence. Buxton looks to be a better hitter though while Davis clearly had more power. Davis really seemed to bulk up midway through his career. I'm not sure Buxton will do the same.
  17. The low minors are looking a little barren and it's gonig to get more barren once Hu gets his deserved promotion.. If Gordon and Gonsalves turn it on, it would go a long way to keeping this farm fresh.
  18. Is that something this team would want then?
  19. All I care about is the triples.
  20. I like baseball history. While this news is current, it's really going to go down as a footnote related to what happened in 1989.
  21. Maybe, but that seems like a lot. Looking at Johnny Bench's hands, I might be more scared of crossing him than a mob enforcer though.
  22. And more often than not, you'll lose it a whole lot faster if you happen to be betting on the Reds the past 30 years.
  23. So clearly his denials were soley to look good to the fans and the media. Unless the Gmen kept this mum from the MLB, they obviously knew he had been lying, which means Rose's continued declaration of innocence was always getting him nowhere with the organization he claimed to want to get back into.
  24. This is not surprising, as according to the well known anecdote, Grace was also the guy to coin the term "Slump Buster". I didn't see anywhere where unattractive baseball groupies were factored into these statistics. Are they measured by quantity or quality?
