  1. Thompson can't see which fingers Suzuki puts down? No concern here!
  2. As long as the team doesn't make him shorten his stride.
  3. In fairness, I'm probably biased against the pick mostly due to the team's track record with pitchers. I desperately want an ace but I need to see one at the MLB level before I believe they are capable of drafting one. They haven't drafted one since Viola in 1981. I'm ready to embrace him though. Let's do this Jay. I'll be supportive and hope the team knows he's the next Chris Sale.
  4. The downside is the Twins basically only have one avenue to find some desperately needed velocity for the rotation, and they once again may have passed.
  5. I'll be happy with the pick if he still has a mid 90s fastball as a starter, but there's no way everyone in the industry thinks a low 90s fastball is a good investment at number 6. Perhaps everyone in the industry thought he'd go in the top ten because the Twins pick in the top ten and historically don't give a crap about their starters velocity.
  6. Low 90s for the sixth overall pick and 2nd overall pitcher? Reports of him keeping his velocity through his long relief outings better be accurate. No team should use a first round pick on a starter with low 90s velocity, let alone a top ten pick.
  7. Sale was a starter and threw just as hard as Jay does from the pen. The Twins better be sure that mid 90s fastball as a reliever doesn't turn into a low 90s fastball as a starter. Good luck with that. I hope it works out, and there's no reason he can't be the first from the draft class to the MLB level, but the team's record of drafting pitchers buys them no benefit of the doubt.
  8. It's stupid and nonsensical, but there's no requirements that the average voter, in baseball or in the political realm, has to be knowledgable. Considering the yearly backlash for HOF, MVP, Cy Young and Gold Glove awards, the "educated" sportswriters probably will still get plenty wrong. Players could vote each other in I suppose, but they're usually too far into the woods to see the trees and likely would mostly vote for guys they know well and have played with/against. I guess the only solution is to pick guys based on advanced statistical analysis. We'll have to use that stat that is universally accepted as the best. Which one is that again, I forget?
  9. I'm not saying the team should get rid of Plouffe, but I'm curious what you need to see from Sano at the plate that would live up to your "no-brainier" standard?
  10. He probably is a good judge, but he's paid to watch Twins baseball, I doubt he's presently and actively scouting Sano. I also don't think there is any reporter more tied into Terry Ryan, he gets quotes from him like they're candy and it's always Halloween. I can't imagine Wolfson is writting about Sano's readiness without getting input from Ryan or someone in the organization. Not that Doogie/Ryan are neccisarily wrong.
  11. I think the only way Sano works at the MLB level right now is if Sano and Mauer rotate at DH, Sano and Plouffe rotate at 3B and Plouffe and Mauer rotate at 1B. I can't imagine teaching him another position will happen quick enough for a pre-August call up. I'm not a Mauer basher, but he really is the keystone roadblock for all of these OF and corner IF prospects.
  12. Well the front office has to pick and choose. I'd hope the many years of developing these guys would give them a leg up on the evaluation process as opposed to the other franchises. It seems pretty easy, the club places a value on these guys based on what they think they can do at the MLB level, keeps their list a secret, then asks other teams which prospects they are interested in. Other than playing musical chairs with these guys and not letting them get consistant at bats, what other option is there?
  13. Sure, but can you find room in your lineup for Buxton, Rosario, Arcia, Harrison, Kepler, Hicks, Vargas, Sano, Pinto, Plouffe, Dozier, Santana, Escobar and Polanco? Might have to run that 14 man linup past the commissioner's office, and there's a $170 million light hitting 1B who has to be accounted for as well. You just can't keep them all, and you'll never be able to evaluate them all either. Some need to be moved or they'll just waste away.
  14. Statistically, it shouldn't add any. However it does appear that somehow, beyond common reason, sometimes intagible variables such as "leadership" impact the win/loss column as much, maybe more, than the statistics. Personally, I like reasoned and explainable data and really want scientific explanaitions, however if we're going to get one from instances like this, it does appear we may have to dig into the psychological realm more so than the statistical one.
  15. Looks good for them now, and even if the Twins do walk away with the better player(s), clearly Houston did very well for themselves. Kind of funny that previously Buxton was supposed to be the superior talent, and while he may be, if years later we say the Twins did have the better draft, it almost certainly will be because Berrios, not Buxton, is exceeding expectations. Of course that will be in part because of the unreasonable expecations placed on Buxton.
  16. I would love the atmosphere around that club right now. To be fair, I get a headache and roll my eyes at every bragadocious word of BS I hear when I'm at a bar or restaraunt with a bunch of 21-24 year olds (though not those who post on Twinsdaily, our young posters seem very reasoned and well adjusted, thank-you-very-much). However, I love the energy young teams have when they go nearly 100% youth movement. Sometimes you get the feeling that they're so naive, they don't realize they're supposed to stink, and once in awhile, that lack of self-fulfilling prophecy means they don't.
  17. And none of them played for the Twins. Just because the Twins may not have the caliber of starting pitching talent St. Louis had, doesn't mean they can't give their methodology a shot. Clearly, an initial move to the pen doesn't mean starting is off the table in the future.
  18. I hope not. It would make no sense and most people don't believe his success is sustainable. However they doubled down on him after 2013 for unknown reasons, and certainly there will be some in the front office that are thinking they are now vidicated with the signing and re-signing. I could see where the feeling of vinidcation may cause someone to revisit their past mistakes. On the other hand, with is current success, Pelfrey may think he can find a long-term deal on the open market and wouldn't even talk a mid-season extension. No way do the Twins give out another long-term deal to a 30+ year-old pitcher, do they? Seriously, do they? Please say they wouldn't.
  19. The front office said it was temporary. Who knows what the future will hold though. Suddenly, the Twins rotation has too many pitchers for too few spots while the bullpen is falling apart. I wouldn't be surprised if the intention really is to move him back to the rotation, but due to need, he stays in the pen. The Cardinals have brought up nearly all of their top pitching prospects and stuck them in the pen. Shelby Miller, Lance Lynn, Marco Gonzalez and Joe Kelly all spent minimal time in the MLB pen then were moved to the rotatoin. Carlos Martinez spent all of last year in the pen and now is moved to the rotation. Meanwhile Trevor Rosenthal got moved to the pen and never came back, of course he's one of the best closers in the game. Somehow whenever St. Louis brings up their prospects and plugs them into the pen, they seem to all have some degree of success no matter what path they eventually put them on. I guess I'm fine brigning Meyer up and plugging him in the pen and see what happens from there. Maybe it'll work in Minnesota too.
  20. So I'm guessing if Polanco gets promoted before Santana gets recalled, Polanco will be coming straight from AA? I don't see how both could co-exist at Rochester if the team still wants both to continue to work on their defense.
  21. Huh, never noticed that feature. Too late to delete now since this is such a hot topic.
  22. Fangraphs: http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=740&position=P In the Batted Ball section. Here's a link to Joe Mays' page. I suggest everyone bookmark it for a quick reference guide.
  23. Anyone ever have posters remorse and wish you could delete your own thread?
