  1. I know most relievers are failed starters, and I'm not even saying Milone was a failure, but you really have to draw the line somewhere. A MLB team really cannot justify having a guy in the bullpen who tops out at 87-88 MPH with no strikeout pitch. It just makes no sense. Starters might be more complete pitchers generally than bullpen guys, but it doesn't mean they automatically would be better in the bullpen.
  2. I didn't like Griffey when he was in his prime, almost solely because he started taking CF duties away from Puckett at the All Star games. As he got older I grew an affinity for him though, just as I do most players I spent a couple decades watching.
  3. A team can never have enough bullpen arms with high contact rates and weak fastballs. I guess.
  4. I agree it's similar but the Cubs signed those guys to bridge to the prospects and most of those guys are already off the roster. Only Jackson got a long term deal and he was under 30 at the time. The Twins strangely did it late in the rebuild process and signed older guys to longer and less tradable deals. To be fair though, I thought the Lester deal was pretty silly. No way that works for more than a year or two.
  5. May 1, 2015: take time machine back to May 1, 2011 and convince Bill Smith that no, 2010 was the mirage and losing is the new norm, clean house ASAP, never having more than a couple 30-year-olds on the roster going forward. Do it or else. May 2, 2011: place some money in St. Louis to win the WS and win some fat cash at the race track. Come back to 2015. May 2, 2015: realize Bill Smith did not heed my advice and the team is still a wasteland. May 3, 2015: take time machine to May 1, 2012 and tell Terry Ryan that no, 2010 was still the mirage, losing is the new norm, start rebuild ASAP. Do it or else. May 4, 2012: place money on San Francisco to win the WS and win some fat cash at the racetrack. Come back to the future, find that Ryan also didn't herd my advice and the team is still a wasteland. May 5, 2015: use my winnings to buy the Twins, replace The front office who as they clearly did not fear my warning and instead thought it would be good fun to sign 30-year-old pitchers to long term deals. May 1, 2016: sit in the owners box and smile as the rubes boo because the Twins have the lowest payroll (and youngest team) in the league. I just don't see any other timeline that works.
  6. Why choose just one? Still, should have been Oliveros, who should have been penciled into the bullpen in spring training. Man he must have done something terrible to a member of the front office's family. They do remember that they got him FOR Delmon Young, he's not actually Delmon Young right?
  7. Facial hair percentage.
  8. Not to defend the Hunter signing (this club has no clue how to rebuild) but if we got rid of 0.0 WAR players, would we be able to field a team? According to Fangraphs WAR, that still makes Hunter one of the top 9 batters on the team, in fact he's only a couple good games out of 2nd behind the WARtastic Shane Robinson. In 2014 Fangraphs had 9 Twins more worthless than Hunter and BBR has 13. 0.0 is pretty darn acceptable for this franchise.
  9. Almost like it's winning that sells tickets? Absurd.
  10. If it ain't going to me, I could give a mouse's butt about who gets that $10 million. It's not going to go towards improving the team at this point. Looks like it never was.
  11. Mauer is a better hitter than Bruno was, but that doesn't mean Bruno doesn't know more about hitting. If hitting coaches were hired based on their ability to hit, there would be thousands of more qualified men to be a hitting instructor than Brunansky, or Vavra, or basically any current hitting coach. Are there any current hitting coaches that were considered a great hitter when they played? Maybe Wally Joyner or Kevin Seitzer were for a short time?
  12. Hicks continues to lead the Lookouts in batting at .380 with 5 doubles, 2 HR and even a triple on this young year. He currently has 9 BB second only to Miguel Sano, and his 18% K rate is quite a bit less than all the regular starters aside from Jorge Polanco. Perhaps most surprisingly, he's played all 14 of his games at 1B, with Max Kepler yet to get a look there and Michael Gonzalez manning DH regularly. His defense is not the high point of his game, I'd like to think the fact that he isn't a regular at DH means the club sees enough potential that they want to make sure he's still capable of playing a position as he advances through the system. With the only player standing above him at Rochester being journeyman Reynaldo Rodriguez, Hicks could be among the first promoted to AAA despite the boatloads of talented teammates he currenty has in AA. Of course the club could also decide to stick Kennys Vargas at 1B in Rochester upon what looks to be his inevitable demotion.
  13. Through three starts, Jason Marquis has a 12.6 K/9
  14. Joe's defense at catcher was really declining prior to his move to 1B. Teams were running at will and he couldn't throw anyone out anymore.
  15. Pelfrey just turned 31. He's definately a candidate for a four year extension from this club.
  16. A statistically averse old school manager? I don't see a fit for him in this era of baseball. Unless the Twins fire Molitor that is.
  17. Jordan Schafer is offended that you think those numbers are bad.
  18. Man, I hope they aren't using a stethoscope to verify his elbow issues.
  19. I get it. I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in that in my view recovery time is actually closer to "never". I actually don't care if the player does the rest and rehab route though. As long as it's the player's decision. It's his arm and his career. I want him back ASAP, but from a human perspective I understand my interest in his future is probably limited to what he can do every fifth day at the MLB level. He likely views himself more than an occasional entertainer.
  20. Have I missed a Twin who came back from it in 2.5 years? I thought this clubs TJ success stories hovered around zero depending on how one views Liriano's 2nd go around.
  21. That's my horse too. My second horse may be pulling a Houston: lowballing a prep player so he doesn't sign and getting the 7th pick in 2016 instead.
  22. I think the only fair thing to do would have been to make Guthrie continue to pitch in the maner he did when throwing to the plate during the steal. If his delivery the rest of the game, or even the rest of his career, had been like that, then I'd think the "alteration" would have been justified.
  23. Tall order asking Meter to fill TWO rotation spots, but I'm OK giving it a shot.
  24. I wouldn't bench him for dropping a ball, that's going to happen, even to good defenders, and I think that it would send the message of "Don't make mistakes!" which is never going to happen. I'd save the benchings for an instance of not hustling, being too casual about chasing down a ball or tossing it too casually back into the infield or some other instance of "Stop being a lazy showboat!" I think that's the real message that needs to be reinforced.
  25. Hey layoff, it was only his first error of the year! Previously his defense was perfect!
