  1. This is why companies get and use earnings reports. If the projections are not favorable, they take steps that are in the companies future best interest. Target's not popular with employees or consumers of their stores due to layoffs, but it is the best for the future of the company. Ryan's blind optimism or desperation is causing him to year after year ignore the projections. Going in each of the last several years, the team has operated like they expect to compete, in what appears, at least in part, to be an attempt make the employees and consumers happy at the expense of meeting future goals.
  2. Excellent analysis from a pretty small quote. I don't hold quite the optimism for Escobar, but it's not out of the realm of possibility. Phillips would be a more appreciated player in today's game, probably along the lines of Ben Zobrist or Martin Prado. I'd be more than happy if Escobar ran into that group.
  3. He should be, but it's ESPN. They don't often watch players in flyover country.
  4. I'd say that other clubs who have ulterior motives, like trying to win the division, get a pass.
  5. Yeah that's great, I hope he fixes his huge flaw and is an outstanding MLB player someday. But he'll hit no HR at the MLB level currently as MLB pitchers can and will throw six inches outside the zone knowing he'll chase anything they throw.
  6. I think he was agreeing with you using thinly veiled sarcasm.
  7. Predicting a rookie pitcher will struggle isn't exactly a genius diagnosis. Believing there is actually a method for preventing a rookie from struggling is the kind of blind optimism that will promise a rebuild will drag on as long as possible. They have no problem letting the team stink while the young bats struggle, which is good. They need to allow the same opportunities for the pitchers. They need to take a deep breath and accept reality, that this team isn't going anywhere until the young arms develop, and the young arms will have to do some on the job learning at the MLB level. It will take time, it could have taken less.
  8. Tyler Jones misses too many bats for this team, a concerted effort needs to be made to stay at this level of futility. A league worst bullpen K/9 of 6.66 certainly would indicate they made a deal with the Devil. Usually the Devil gives you something in return. I wonder what this team got?
  9. I would take a 121-year old Satchel Paige over Milone for the 5th spot. Maybe Gaedel should also get dug up to 'mentor' Arcia and Vargas about how to take a pitch.
  10. Why do you try to depress us to start out the weekend?
  11. Both those strikeout totals are pathetic.
  12. I don't see how one could make that argument. They were going to struggle upon a call up, like most rookies. Why wouldn't you want them to get their struggles out when your team is non-competitive?
  13. A big high five to anyone if they can tell me if this is the oldest opening day 25-man roster in baseball history for a club coming off of four 90 loss seasons. Or even three 90 loss seasons. Or three 85 loss seasons.
  14. If you thought I was implying the Twins were getting the proper personnel for a modern bullpen, I appoligize, I meant quite the opposite. They seem to be getting all the wrong fits for a lock down pen. At least above A ball.
  15. Good for Gilmartin, and good for the Mets. The guy is back in the NL where he has a chance. I'm 100% through with 89 mph junkballers; I dont care which hand they throw with. The Twins pitching staff needs to a big fat injection of red-hot, bat-missing, pants-crappin', plate-crowding-repellent velocity. There's no room any longer for guys like Gilmartin.
  16. I'm concerned about the contrasting rhetoric about the Twins bullpen options. From posts here, the print media and organizational comments, it would seem that at the same time the team has too many pitchers for too few spots AND doesn't have enough quality arms in the pen. Good luck with that.
  17. So young bullpen arms shouldn't be called upon unless the team is in the toilet? That doesn't sound like a way to breed a winning atmosphere. There's always room for an arguement regarding potential vs past production but the "vets" in the pen hardly have a track record to carry much weight.
  18. We never seemed to hold that against Miguel Cabrera even though for the last half decade he gets to hit against minor league pitching 18-19 times a year.
  19. Milone coming in from the bullpen and giving up contact nearly every at bat with runners on base sounds worse than him pitching in the first inning, and that doesn't sound good either.
  20. It makes you a better person than me, because I only hope May throws a phenomenal game while Pelfrey and Milone get blasted and yanked in the first inning. But let's just keep that between you and me. Wouldn't want it getting out that I'm an evil dirtbag who has a personal bias in the matter.
  21. Perhaps it's the pessimist in me, but I tend to trust guys less when they do their philanthropy while the cameras are rolling. I find the word-of-mouth stories of good deeds more endearing. For me there's a "look at me" feeling of paying to improve their public image when celebrities bring news crews with them. Kind of like hearing the "charitable" contributions Walmart or big tobacco make only to find out that the money they spent advertising their good deeds dwarfed their actual donations tenfold.
  22. Yes. I like Plouffe, but tend to think he's merely an average player who happens to play a position with a significant decline in offense the past half decade. I'll only be bummed about any negative observations because I'd like to keep that inflated trade value up.
  23. Please, please, please, please, puuuuuleaseeeeeeeee, just this once! We've had such a rough stretch, we deserve something nice right?
  24. I think there's room for compromise here. How about we just tank two games instead and draft Jon Gray? Most people had Gray ahead of Bryant anyway, quite possibly the Twins as well considering how pitching starved they were (are). Everyone was expecting Gray or Appel to go to the Cubs.
