  1. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/division-preview-al-central/ Well technically they predict the Twins to improve as they don't give them 90 losses, but... "With no great teams and only one franchise not really trying to contend this year," Zing! "Unfortunately, the Twins have spent nearly every other position on the field not making similar bets, so instead of high-upside gambles, Hughes and Dozier are surrounded by aging mediocrities like Ervin Santana, Ricky Nolasco, Torii Hunter, and Kurt Suzuki." Double zing! "Minnesota probably should have taken some more fliers on upside plays rather than trying to limit their downside potential" Yowza! "The resulting combination is a team that will not be good nor likely very interesting" Burn!
  2. But I could care less if Plouffe and Dozier start losing velocity due to the natural decline that comes with a build up of innings and age.
  3. I find using FICO scores are the most accurate. Have you seen them? Not pretty.
  4. I feel the same way, yet in all honesty, there's really nothing I actually inherently dislike about them. During the WS I had a teacher ask the class who everyone was cheering for, six kids said the Braves. One maybe two kids may have had a legit claim to fandom, but six? Hell no, they just wanted to be contrarians in Twins Nation and provoke an indignant outburst from Twins faithful the teacher surely wasn't expecting when presenting the question. Through no fault of the team, those kids turned the Braves rotten for me since. I have little ill will toward the Cardinals, and probably only because I had a teacher who had the foresight not to turn her English lesson into a barstool debate in 1987.
  5. Not a banner class. There's a few there that must be added, but a majority are still to uncertain, raw or lacking upside to need to worry about losing. Of course the team always tends to have a different vision for who gets added than we do.
  6. I agree, except I think you're being generous to Fein. Andrew Miller and Wade Davis certainly would take exception.
  7. I'm interested in Brown as he's a former top propsect who lost his luster but can play CF. On the other hand, that's basically Aaron Hicks last year, and Jordan Schaffer a couple years before that and Shane Robinson before that. Add him to the collection and then snag Joe Benson when the Braves eventually DFA him too.
  8. So runners on 2nd and 3rd no outs in a tie game in the 7th and the only guys available who have good enough stuff to reasonably hope for a strike out is the Rule V rookie or the closer?
  9. Of equal concern to me: Who can get righties out?
  10. Very true, but Bryant and Boras were taking the expected Boras hard line and did take negotiations right to the wire. The Cubs probably at that time had a good idea what cards they were being dealt should they want to talk extension later. Those cards likely being a duece and a seven. However on the otherhand, Appel signed early and at a discount. He was/is also represented by Boras. That might indicate to a team he would be willing to sign an extension down the road. Of course now that I listed those two different examples from the same draft, it may indicate that the player is more to blame than the agent. Which makes me want to delete this post, because I'm not much for defending Boras.
  11. Mauer will be fine if he goes ahead and makes a concerted effort in beating the Mauer shift, he always was a good enough hitter to do what he wanted with the ball anyway. However it was clear last year that he needed to adjust, and he didn't, so I'm not sure he's willing or able to adjust any longer.
  12. To keep it in the division I picked the White Sox, however I would have also been happy picking the Yankees, Red Sox or Cubs, basically any team that ESPN and other national outlets tell me that I'm supposed to care about.
  13. The Twins love their soft-tossing lefties, though I guess not enough to protect this one. It's getting a little crowded at Rochester and the big club though, I would have thought the Twins would have been more than willing to work out a trade with the Mets, but the fact that the Mets are keeping him may indicate that there were some discussions and the Twins told them to suck it. Anyway, I'm good with any outcome that keeps 88 mph meatballers out of the system.
  14. Yup, this is really the true issue with Boras. Are owners greedy? Duh, it's a given and won't change. But this isn't an issue of greed, it's an issue of keeping a player for as long as the CBA allows, why wouldn't every team and every fan want to do that? Like you said, the Cubs may be receptive to brining Bryant up if he had an agent that was willing to discuss an early career extension. He doesn't.
  15. They could change the formula completely. Something along your second idea would be easy enough. Service time is tied to calendar years, starting in August or perhaps September. Any player called up prior to August/September, no matter how many games played, has his clock start that season. Players called up after August 1st/September 1st will be considered 1st year players for the following season. Team's aren't going to be likely to keep MLB ready players down nearly all year then, the temptation will then be to screw with service time around July for any mid-season call up, however that's when teams are still trying to position themselves for playoff runs and thinking about the trade deadline.
  16. I like it, the Joe Benson kerfuffle was a pretty hot topic here on TD for quite awhile. I can't believe it was only 2013 when this Benson business all happened though, it seems like ages ago. Nothing worng with a walk down memory lane. I would be just as amused with a Michael Restovich comeback thread, a guy I was more incredulous about losing. Ha silly past me, getting all worked up over nothing. Good thing present me is more rational Besides most people seem to be taking this thread lightly as was clearly your intention. Edit: I guess I hadn't read page 2 yet.
  17. I'm for getting the young guys to the majors, but if it's Buxton and Sano I delay them two weeks to save a year. Plus, I love seeing Boras get dirt kicked in his face, no one wants to see the richest kid in the room get everything he wants all the time. Yeah, I have issues, I know. Seems like a pretty easy fix for the Players Union, that is if they gave a damn about the guys who only dream about being in the union one day.
  18. For pitchers, I'm very on board for limited innings at the upper levels. Again, not sure what they can learn in the minors they can't at the majors.
  19. May and Meyer should both have debuted early 2014. The team stunk so extra team losses should have had zero influence on the decision. I fail to see how pitching in AAA as opposed to the MLB can make a pitcher "more ready" for MLB competion. Besides, a GMs best pitching coach supposed to be the one at the MLB level? Meyer's is going to have a hard time learning Neal Allen's change up six states away.
  20. Cleveland released Scott Downs. It seems the Twins have flirted with him for years. He can't strike anyone out anymore, he's a lefty and he's old as dirt. Even money says the Twins are already on the phone with his agent.
  21. Three of which premeired over a decade ago. Gomez on the otherhand debuted with the Mets; I have serious doubts the Twins would have done the same.
  22. I'd bet Hicks still mans CF in Rochester, as Rochester is still going to want to do what's best for them to win games. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm guessing it usually doesn't go over well when the big club dictates lineup and positional demands upon the affiliates. It didn't stop the Twins from putting Santana in CF last year despite a lack of opportunities in the minors and it seems to me Parmelee, Colabello and Herrmann have often been regularly assigned to MLB positions they less often played in the minors.
  23. So are we making predictions here? Because if we are, here are mine: Jose Berrios will get called up before Alex Meyer (due to injury or performance, the crystal ball does not show). And Byron Buxton will be wearing a Twins uniform before Aaron Hicks does, which won't be until September for the later but will be in July for the former, less due to performance of the player and more out of desperation at the CF position at the MLB level.
  24. Well I'd hardly say Gibson was fast tracked. He had TJ consideration so there is some room for benefit of doubt, but he also could have been called up in early 2013 instead of late 2013. The team was already in the tank and Gibson could have had a shot at getting his struggles out of the way early in the year instead of late in the year and carry over into 2014. As for the other players listed, yes, they have been promoted earlier than expected (though only because they stayed so long in the lower levels) which is what has some of us perplexed. Why are the position players allowed to come up and learn at the MLB level but not the pitchers? Pitchers have shorter useful careers, they should be called up when they are young to get everything you can out of them.
