  1. I doubt Hughes is going to just walk away. But it's not the union's call. If a guy wants to walk away because his body can't take it or he doesn't have it in him to keep toiling away with futility, the union can't force him to keep playing if both the team and the player have come to an agreement. That would be neither be ethical nor legal and any pressure they put on a player to continue playing when he desires not to is only going to alienate the union from players who commiserate with a guy who's body has lost the ability to play the game.
  2. In such a bizarre year for the MLBPA, should Hughes choose to renegotiate and walk away and if the Twins used the savings on one of the unsigned free pitchers, I'd bet the union would put up less of a stink. And why would we think a contract cant be renegotiated? Hughes literally renegotiated the deal he's currently pitching under. His original deal paid him 8M per year, he renegotiated and got 9.2M for the original contract years plus the extension.
  3. I'd prefer Littell at AAA but he's still only had 14 starts at AA so far. But I think the bigger news is that Fernando Romero wasn't sent down. Typically the top prospects with injury history get sent packing right away just in case they get hurt and start accruing service time. If he wasn't cut there must at least be some possibility of giving him a shot at winning a 25-man job, even if still slim.
  4. I understand why the players are going with the narrative that teams are tanking to maximize profit, but didn't the Cubs and Astros set the precedent of tanking to maximize....future competitiveness? The players won't like it, but I agree with the salary cap/salary floor. They can feel free to make the floor fairly high, let's say $150M. If the Pirates and Marlins owners don't like it they can sell or get the other owners to further subsidize them.
  5. I mean I'd assume so, but the Ballad of Neil Walker this off season has to be putting a scare into him. The Twins probably have 3-4 internal options for his replacement, other clubs probably do too. If I was Dozier, I'd be campaigning to get some time at 3B or corner OF just to increase my versatility. Huh, just typing that it occurred to me that if Dozer could play LF, that'd sure make for a nice option to spell Kepler against lefties.
  6. How did you forget about Brian Bosworth?
  7. It would be nice to see Logan Morrison get some games in the outfield. A ) to see if it's a feasible possibility. B ) to show Grossman and Granite that they better bring their A game if they're going to make this team.
  8. Nice article John, so many take aways. Very interesting that this was basically practice for the front office. I knew we hadn't gone through much arbitration but I hadn't realized the Twins were mocked in league circles for their avoidance of the process. It's not surprising I guess, they always did seem to stress not upsetting the apple cart. Not that that's necessarily bad. With all these young guys coming up and no extension offers as of yet, the new crew likely will need to be quite familiar with arbitration. It's also interesting that the guys dishing dirt on the player on behalf of the organization are actually league employees, not Twins employees. That was a wise move by whomever came up with that idea.
  9. I don't see any news items regarding a controversial tweet from him. You'll have to summarize.
  10. In game 7 do you want to run Santana out to face Kluber, Sale, Keuchel or Kershaw? I don't, why does this team always have to be the underdog?
  11. Free agency used to be the time where everyone got excited for shiny new presents. I think a lot of teams aren't viewing them as so "shiny" and "new" any more. Most of these guys are fairly average vets "shiny" and "new" now applies to the youngsters already in the organization and when you look at the financial demand of the vets, expecting these guys who are relocating to a new organization, a new city, a new stadium, a new manager and new teammates, the odds of them being significantly better than the young guys in the system probably isn't all that good.
  12. Those at the round table may be the same, but I really don't think we've seen enough to know if the new king accepts evaluations at face value and delegates draftresponsibilities the same as the old king.
  13. I've been saying this team needs an ace to win the world series and that adding the likes of Cobb or Lynn do nothing to achieve that goal, however I can acknowledge that nothing is absolute. Obviously it's possible to win without one, but why handicap yourself to such a degree? Go get an ace. Go get the best players, don't handicap yourself, tilt the odds in your favor. Being in a mid-market does not mean you MUST be the underdog every post season.
  14. I'm all for an extension and I think the idea that it's a gamble for the Twins would be pretty short-sighted. If he doesn't pan out, they can easily afford to overpay for Buxton now. If he does pan out, they quite possibly could not afford to pay him in the future. Also a side note, man, the prestige of The Athletic clearly has faded quickly if Jim Bowden is writing for them.
  15. That's what they'd have to do it before he becomes elite.
  16. There's no doubt that even if the Twins waited and Buxton blew up this year they could still afford to give him an extension of some sort next year However should he blow up this year and they give him a pricey extension, I don't know that they could afford to hand out too many more to guys like Berrios, Sano, Rosario, Polanco or whomever else they'd like to keep around. An elite defensive CF'er with a big bat? Whoa boy, look out that's going to cost a pretty penny.
  17. I see a lot of 60 day DL suggestions. He's pitching now, I'm wondering what the basis for any DL stint, let alone a 60 day-er is. I think if they try to shelf him and clear a roster spot for him simply due to ineffectiveness and poor velocity the team will have some questions to answer from both the league and the union.
  18. Maybe some team will value him on his ERA+ but so far it doesn't look like it. All he really has is basically three different fastballs, a four seamer a two seamer and a cutter. When he started out no one thought he'd stay in the rotation because of his lack of secondary pitches, so credit to him that he's made it this far. But with no real offspeed or breaking pitch, only average velocity on his fastball and an alarming reliance on the sinker, his usefulness doesn't look likely to continue, at least not to me. I also don't think it's a coincidence that every free agent starter left has a very high sinker usage. I don't think I'm the only one who thinks it tends to be counter-productive when used in high doses, particularly now that nearly every batter has changed his swing to avoid hitting grounders.
  19. $12M/2 years sounds low but it's better than $0M/0 years which appears to be the offer from just about everyone else. Lynn's numbers and his abilities look destined to flop, at least in the AL.
  20. I'd guess if all the Rays get for Archer are Kepler and Adams, the Yankees wouldn't even bother with the Twins, they'd just offer Frazier and Adams and take Archer for themselves.
  21. Coming from someone who has likely never been a victim of sexual assault. You said in an earlier post that you didn't want another poster to put words in your mouth, I'd suggest you stop projecting feelings, motivations and internal conflict onto someone else, someone who you can't possibly relate to in any way.
  22. They'll try at least. With Pittsburgh looking like a rebuild situation, they certainly are more likely to let him struggle at the majors and keep him be it this summer or next year. At least the Angels are trying to win now. Hopefully they'll feel Bard is too much of a liability to trust on a team trying to win it all. I'd think the odds of getting Bard back are probably much higher than Burdi's regardless of how either is pitching (or not pitching).
  23. I'm on board with Cousins I guess. Clearly the best option. But wasn't there a graphic during every Washington prime time game that kept showing Kirk Cousins was 0-11 or whatnot in prime time games? Until last year, prime time games have typically been a bit of a bugaboo for this franchise.
  24. Can we let him screw the NRA and nutjobs in his own party who need the NRA campaign dollars first?
  25. I think you hold onto him until the last cut and see what happens. I'll predict the Rays end up claiming him though. They have really unsettled 1B and DH situations and seeing as they've let Morrison, Duda and Dickerson go without doing anything to fill the 1B/DH spots makes me think they're already scoping other teams' rosters to see what might shake loose later.
