  1. Teams all want the young guys in their physical prime. The MLBPA surely will dig their heels in about getting those guys paid in the next CBA. Everyone knows the players are the ones getting the short end of the stick at the moment. With no concern for salary, I too like the young players and want my team full of them, so I'm with the owners on that front. However if the owners don't want a strike they better not try to play dumb about how this new trend is pushing still serviceable vets out of the game and they better agree to some considerable concessions. I think having a very high salary floor would fix a lot. Then teams who want to rebuild will have to figure out where to put their money and the young guys end up getting paid early.
  2. I've made the case previously here that I suspect that the 5th starter is going to most likely be that guy to start the year. It doesn't look like the bullpen will have a mop-up/long man.
  3. Only if one assumes the team is going to roll with five starters all year. For all we know holding on to Hughes now saves the team from having to go with Dietrich Enns later.
  4. But that's only because the front office doesn't share our utter lack of faith in Hughes. How do we know that Hughes isn't one of the best five guys in the eyes of the front office? I think they've demonstrated that they are doing their damndest to win. It probably doesn't matter if they are holding on to him because they think the depth is worth it down the road, or because they still think he can contribute now. I've been ready to cut the cord on him since last year, but I can't pretend that him flaming out is absolute and written in stone. Since the team is showing that they are going for it, it probably means that they think it's not a sure thing and it's worth a shot to see if he has something left. It's almost surely not because they are trying to recoup invisible money or owe it to a veteran or something of that nature.
  5. The Twins have a record payroll and loaded up with a bunch of vets, you don't think the front office is trying to put together the most competitive 40-man roster they can? They cut under-performing players last year right and left, why do you assume they won't do it again? I'm not a Hughes fan, I think he's done, but you have no clue if he will cost the team 4-5 games. It's not like he's blocking some young stud that's a sure thing to contribute. And you certainly know that his FB isn't 43 MPH.
  6. I'm sure it's a product of looking across the aisle and seeing that this is exactly how the GOP operates. If a Republican doesn't check all the boxes they are tossed aside in favor of someone who does; they are lock-step and there is no room for alternate party views. Even if an individual slips through the cracks and are not lock step (Trump) the message might morph but everyone still unifies around the one vision. It hadn't always been that way for the GOP, it probably started some with the Reagan era and then really took hold with Karl Rove. I'd guess the Dems could get a strongman/strongwoman to threaten and bribe party members into one unified vision, but is it worth it to sell their soul to do so when there's only one major party with any hint of a soul left?
  7. I've been harping on the fact that he doesn't have off speed pitches, and I still don't like it. I do like that he's very aware of that and owns it completely. Seems like a fun guy, hope it works out.
  8. I like the personality and the attitude.
  9. Right, it isn't about sunk cost, it's about retaining the most assets as possible. I don't want Hughes anymore, but they get to hold on to more toys this way I guess. And last year it meant a pretty quick hook. We all were disappointed that Danny Santana, Craig Breslow, Michael Tonkin and Justin Haley all made the club, but they all had a really short leash before being kicked to the curb. The Twins still have all the guys with options, they're just actually using the options. This team is at a record payroll and the new front office had no problem last year getting rid of the players causing on-field issues. I don't think Hughes is going to have a long leash if he's costing the team games and there are better options. My tune would probably be different if Hughes was taking a spot away from a guy like Berrios. I like Mejia, but I don't see him as a significant asset at the moment.
  10. Paul Goldschmidt. Don't anyone fight me on this.
  11. Doesn't Derek Falvey have an economics degree? I think we can safely assume he understands the concept of sunk cost. I don't think it's a matter of whether the Twins will actually do a 4 man rotation or not. With the off days, starters typically not going deep early in the season and the lack of long men in the bullpen they probably know that there are going to be multiple times the #5 starter is going to get work out of the pen, however they don't know when they'll need him so it's not like they can plan accordingly. The 5th guys is likely going to be yo-yoed, they probably don't want that for Mejia.
  12. The Vikings have lost Keenum, Bradford, Bridgewater and McKinnon. All of those guys can likely be replaced with little to no issue. All but Bridgewater look like they are going to start and Teddy might end up starting if he can beat out a geriatric QB. It's been awhile, but the Vikings might load up on compensatory draft picks in 2019. I believe they are weighted on salary and playing time. Keenum and Bradford sure are going to help the Vikings case in the salary requirement and hopefully the playing time requirement. MicKinnon looks to be the starter in SF at the moment.
  13. I hope so, but I'm less and less optimistic. Is anyone who voted Trump a year and a half ago actually ashamed of doing so now? That's what needs to happen and the GOP is basically now running on the platform that there is no such thing as shame.
  14. I liked Teddy a lot and he was the guy I wanted in the draft all along. But he couldn't or wouldn't throw downfield. From Ponder to Bridgewater to Bradford that was a problem, either they couldn't throw down field or were too cautious to do so, I don't want hesitant QBs. And the Vikings likely don't have to lose a key player. Mike Florio had a good rundown on dollar allocation for the Vikings a week ago in regards to Cousins and what the Vikings have left for the rest of the team. The only guys they have to worry about extending now really are Barr, Hendricks, Hunter and Diggs. If they do it right they can probably extend all of them in the next couple of years, but really, what are the odds that in the next couple of years none of the four are going to stumble and not be worth extending? Pretty low, the odds are that one or more aren't going to make it two-three more years as studs.
  15. Yeah, a nice side effect of this deal is that the Packers might have to break the bank for Rodgers. It'd be great if the Vikings can absorb Cousins' deal and retain the guys they need to while GB still has salary concerns even though they have almost no players of relevance after Rodgers and his aging WR corps. But only a three year deal might mean that a sit-and-wait QB from the draft is in play any year now. Though maybe Kyle Sloter is someone they really like.
  16. I don't think that just because Mejia got sent down it necessarily means he won't get a look at being the fifth starter early. I mean, there is no long man in the bullpen is there, early on the long man has to be the fifth starter right? Even if Duffy ends up being a long man out of need, all of the healthy starters look very sketchy to be able to consistently go deep into games. Unless they want to blow through their bullpen innings early in the year, I'd think they're going to need a starter getting a bunch of relief work early.
  17. I'd guess the distance people will run in the opposite direction tends to correlate to the magnitude of the insanity coming from the crazy person screaming at them.
  18. Yeah, but it does indicate that even if Mueller happened to turn up an actual video of Trump and Putin exchanging money in a urine soaked bed filled with Russian prostitutes and the corpses of Dreamers which they just sacrificed to appease Satan's demands, nothing will come of it because there's nothing he could possibly do that would make them impeach him.
  19. So Keenum and Brees are officially off the table; it's Cousins or bust now. It's going to be ugly if he goes against what everyone is thinking and takes the slightly higher payday from the Jets.
  20. Wasn't that the intention with his appointment? Or was that just the strategy for Education, EPA and National Parks Service?
  21. Boy, that would be great. Looking at the schedule though, the Twins don't play the Royals until late May and then not again until July! If Nolasco makes it that long as a starter with a rebuilding team it would be a minor miracle.
  22. I think (hope) that after the point when Derek Falvey and Thad Lavine are no longer referred to as the "new" front office we will have fewer problems with the too common assumption that praise or criticism of the "new" guys necessarily correlates to a criticism or praise of the "old" guys.
  23. I'm just fine with 1 year deals. More than fine actually, they tend to be great gambles. This offseason my number 1 concern was that I wanted a front line starter. To get out of the play-in round of the playoffs and advancing far enough, the Twins hopes now rest almost entirely on Berrios developing into a top 10 pitcher or so. I also think good pitchers will be available at the trade deadline. Unfortunately the Twins are almost certainly already at their max salary position; they're not going to be able to afford 2018's version of Justin Verlander now. And while I'm just fine taking a flyer on Lance Lynn for one year, I don't think he's probably going to have his best year. I can't see any way a guy is going to do any better than he already has when he doesn't have an off speed pitch. If he was coming up through the system today he would have been moved to the bullpen before he got to AA. His repertoire is severely limited; think Tyler Duffey but instead of the curveball, just different kinds of fastballs. I'm not raining on any parades, it was a fantastic off season.
  24. Yeah, I'll wait until I see the end result. And by that I mean what the investigations show after his presidency as to how he personally benefited from these threats.
  25. Moderator note: We have multiple threads to continue this line of discussion in the sports bar. This article is discussing the 3B position and Sano's ability/inability to play it. If anyone instead wishes to talk about due process vs. the rights of the public, please take it to the more appropriate threads instead of derailing this one.
