  1. Le Velle was on Kfan and says he thinks John Heyman was just throwing stuff out there. He doesn't think there's much connection. La Velle seemed to think the Twins would either make a significant trade for the top of the rotation or do nothing else. He said the team was comfortable letting Sanchez, Mejia, Slegers and Hughes fight it out until better options presented themselves.
  2. I feel terrible for the parents and also bad for the security guy. Resource officers were originally hired to break up fights and bust kids smoking dope out in the parking lot. He should have volunteered the information that he would not be willing to engage an active shooter all by himself, but it's beyond crazy that we're expecting people to eagerly play Rambo in these situations. Typically the guys who WANT to play Rambo are the exact people you don't want to do it.
  3. Or the years. As much as I'd prefer not to chase these guys, if it ended up being a 1 year deal that's fine by me. I'd sign anyone to a 1 year deal; pulling the plug on flop or dumping him for peanuts is rarely an issue on a contract of that length. Sorry Mr. Palmeiro, please remain seated, that was not directed at you.
  4. Yeah, the only surprising thing about this is that it wasn't the Orioles or Blue Jays running this scam this time. Not yet anyway.
  5. That's promising, but Cobb doesn't even throw a four seamer anymore. It's basically just lots and lots of sinker plus a curve. He has a splitter but the usage of that drastically reduced after he came back from TJ surgery.
  6. I think there might be two different arguments. Drafting relief pitchers and drafting hard throwers. The non-hard throwing relievers have actually been working out pretty well in Duffey, Rogers and Hildenberger. TBD on Reed. And in all honesty, at the time I was only OK with the drafting hard throwing relievers exclusively because of the 'hard throwing' aspect which the team was sorely lacking. I still want to find that velocity somewhere, but I was wrong on that account I guess.
  7. Agreed. I'm not a fan of his style of pitching but I'd be more confident in him than Lynn when it comes to the possibility of completely getting derailed due to performance.
  8. No argument, both look better than Nolasco, but FIP is much less kind to Lynn. And I don't think I can stomach another sub 7 K/9 pitcher like Cobb. If something happens I'll cheer for them and wish for the best, I know others don't like the same things from baseball that I do, I've been dying for more strikeouts from Twins pitchers for a decade and these guys look to make the team go further in the wrong direction. Significantly more groud balls for Sano, Polanco and Dozier isn't my preferred choice. It seemed like they finally got Gibson to see the light at the end of last year and it just felt like such a victory, to my (surely unreasonable) anti-sinker brain these guys just seem like two steps back.
  9. I get it, but I think everyone is over-estimating the likelyhood that either Lynn or Cobb aren't going to Nolasco all over themselves. Both achieved moderate success with the only clubs they've ever know despite the fact that all indicators and peripheral stats say that they are just as close to imploding as they are to being useful. I don't need more sinkerballers with long leashes on long term deals, these guys aren't that good. Signing Lynn or Cobb just seems like signing someone just for the sake of signing someone. I'd like to trade for a better pitcher, and if that's not happening, I'd rather bide my time. These two aren't the answer.
  10. I'd like to see Slegers get an extended look in the pen. Towering righthander without much velocity but with control that's unique for large men? Seems like Jon Rauch is a pretty close comp.
  11. The change of scenery vets who get these kinds of deals are what 50/50 at best not to bust? I like taking risks, but there's so little payoff with guys with next to no ceiling. Tyler Chatwood had me interested, he had velocity and he had some interesting pitches. Not these guys, they just have back-of-the-baseball-card stats; Wins and ERA. I like Lynn better than Cobb who gives up more contact than nearly everyone in the league, but Lynn is basically a 2 1/2 pitch pitcher moving from the NL to the AL with a FB that tops out at about 92 and an increasing reliance on a sinker. His lack of repertoire was why everyone always said he'd never make it in the rotation. Everyone can boo away, but if Lynn comes to the Twins, I'll put my money on Kyle Gibson having a better year than him. "Better" being a relative term.
  12. I don't care about being payroll neutral, I care about being 25-man flexible since this team absolutely does not have the starting pitchers it takes to win a WS at the moment and Lynn and Cobb won't help in that regard. We've all seen how painfully difficult it is to get the manager and the GM to remove a below average veteran starting pitchers from the rotation let alone the roster. If Lynn and Cobb and Santana and Gibson and Sanchez and Odorizzi are "Eh not great but not the worst" that ends up being the absolute worst possible outcome. These guys are like glitter; next to impossible to wash off when the party is over and you want to be move on.
  13. I would rather focus on that ace now. If not an ace, something much more resembling one than Cobb or Lynn. If they can't or won't do that, let things lie as they are and cross our fingers that Romero, Gonsalves or Littel are better than expected and can contribute in short order. I don't want the back of the rotation set at all. I don't want to lock any of these types of guys into the gig, they can't be trusted but they are assured of getting more chances than any rookie who may have promise. This team needs pitchers on the 25-man who have higher potential. Unless this team isn't actually attempting to win it all this year.
  14. Yeah but this team already is tying up 40-man spots for Odorizzi, Santana, Sanchez, Gibson and Hughes. These guys already have next to no room to grow into a front line starter. I don't think there is any more room for completely average starters like Lynn and Cobb who have no hope of leading a rotation. And intentionally capping your team's potential might not even be the biggest problem, you get these no ceiling vets in a change of scenery and they're just as likely to go bust as anyone, but since they're a vet and they're getting paid well they keep getting futile chance after chance after chance. Pelfrey, Nolasco and Hughes should have never gotten the leash they did. No more of these kinds of pitchers unless it's a one year deal.
  15. If it's a trade it would have to be one more player added to the Twins 40-man than they remove. So it's not just Danny Duffy, it's Kelvin Herrera too I guess.
  16. Which is why this team should be/should have ensured they got someone significantly better than Lynn and Cobb.
  17. Well the team added three MLB free agent relievers in free agency and only got one MLB caliber starter. The timing and Chargois' shroud of uncertainty make this an ideal time to do it if they HAD to. I'd have ditched Enns first though. Kinley next. Or both, regardless.
  18. Better Lynn than Cobb. But I'd hope it's three years or less. And I really wouldn't have much faith in either. Still would prefer a trade. Danny Duffy scenarios have been running through my head for a couple days now.
  19. I figured it was for Sanchez or Odorizzi, but I see they've already been added. This could be exciting. If it was a free agent move teams typically have time before the announcement and actual signing when they have time to clear a spot. Is a trade more likely?
  20. With so many decent vets still looking for a job, here's hoping other teams are just as guarded of their current 40-man spots.
  21. That's too bad, hope he can come back. Those labrum issues can be rough for power pitchers, ugh, not a good sign. Looking back at all the debate about losing Alex Meyer in the Hector Santiago for Ricky Nolasco deal, we may end up finding out that Alan Busenitz was the only player involved in that transaction worth fussing over.
  22. I'm sure he could have gotten regular at bats, but it's probably easier to sell a free agent on an everyday gig in RF then a more hypothetical rotation of various OF and DH spots.
  23. I agree, the Twins find themselves in the spot in the draft where teams willing to gamble on upside can get some nice prizes who fell unexpectedly. Also from last year Seth Romero fell to that range. Sean Manaea and Luke Weaver did in years past as well. If the team isn't locked into a college pitcher, some of the best college bats tend to fall here because they're not as sexy as the raw HS kids. Jeren kendall, Joey Gallo, Derek Fischer and Aaron Judge were all guys that were supposed to be top picks going into the season but dropped in lieu of those all too tempting HS bats. Of course many years there's still one of those high ceiling HS arms that fall due to injury or sign-ability like Joey Wentz, Lucas Giolito or Lance McCullers.
  24. Which in turn makes the lawmakers worry that their million dollar bribes from the NRA will dry up. Rubio has gotten 3.3M from them? Man, those figures need to be required to be worn on their lapel while campaigning instead of the ironic American flag they pin to it.
