    Larnach is seeing 4.57 pitches per plate appearance. The only other Twin over 4.00 is Correa. I agree, Larnach is taking the best at bats on the team at the moment and would make a good lead off hitter until someone more traditional gets called up.

    Sorry, not buying a career turnaround at his age. I think his inability to put the ball in play is going to be frustrating all year and we’re going to see him pinch hit for regularly, or we’ll be complaining about leaving men on base all season.

    I also disagree. We had long games BECAUSE Jeter and Garciaparra started trying to out-primp and procrastinate each other during national TV games. I'm happy to be away from the dog show theatrics and back to actual game action. I don't want the post season games ruined so the movie-star wannabe filled teams the Twins always end up playing can audition for their post-playing career TV gigs while they're in the batters box.

    Agreed. I hope this Taylor for Buxton thing is over soon. I suspect it will pass about the time the weather warms, but who knows when that will be. But Taylor batting isn't the only problem. I'm glad Solano came through with a hit yesterday, but we already saw a continuation of last year's dreaded LOB trend. This team needs more authoritative bats, both in the bottom half of the lineup and at the very top. I mean, you're paying a guy 11M and pinch hit for him in the sixth inning of game one? I agree with the pinch hitting, but hard to justify the signing.

    Wow, hell of a spring training stat line for Cave too. Is he holding that job until Bryce Harper comes back and the Phillies have to decide between Harper and Schwarber in LF? That's like not until June. He'll probably at least get the heavy end of a platoon as it looks like the Phillies only have 5 OF on their roster and Castellanos and Schwarber probably shouldn't be outfielders. Crazy to think Jake Cave, at the age of 30, might have a shot at a 'breakout' season, on a fairly loaded roster for the reigning world champs.

    MLB added a bunch of new rules, but none of them allowed a team to score runs while on defense. Sorry, but I disagree with this. The Twins outfield defense wasn't an issue last year, and it still wouldn't have been this year had Gallo and Gordon split backup CF duties. This just made the offense worse, and the offense was and still is a problem.

    I’m not sure about Pagan, but I think the others will be fun to watch this year. I think Winder will end up on the list sometime this year. Like the other former starters, I think his velocity will play up in full time relief, and he’s got a good slider and control.

    Smarter to go with the young guy with options. We know the front office struggles cutting bait on struggling vets. If they struggle, they'd struggle for months. Neither is getting cut next week if/when the team needs a fresh arm. Not just because the front office gives vets too long of leashes, but because it would be a total jerk move to the player. They have zero qualms optioning young players though.

    I'm not cheering for injuries and I'd not like to count on them anyway. If things are like 2021-22, there'll be starts for the young guys to audition. But if things are like 2019-20, probably just Ober gets enough of a run to evaluate him for 2024. We'll still be scratching our heads about Varland, SWR and anyone else making noise in AAA, even if they end up getting a couple spot starts at the MLB level. Really, how many outings are enough to feel like we have a good read on these guys though? I mean enough so the front office doesn't go back to the trading option, again? 10 starts? 50 innings out of the rotation and bullpen combined? If health and performance hold up for the current starters, the front office has to force the issue if only to not be in the same position in 2024.

    My picks: Offensive MVP: Jose Miranda Pitching MVP: Tyler Mahle Julien would only be a sleeper in terms of fantasy, but yeah, I'm contemplating adding him now. I'm worried that he might be down awhile though if they won't even give him a job over Willie Castro. My Super Sleeper is really, really sleeping though. I'm going with Anthony Prato. If/When the team finally decides they want a righthanded outfielder that can hit, other than Buxton, he should be the guy over Garlick. He's really good at getting on base, he steals bases and last year showed giant increases in his previously low XBH categories.

    But you know he was referring to controllable starting pitchers, and not specifically their ages. They can't keep trading for starters with two years of control left every year. At some point they have to let their own young arms have a real run at roster spots.

    Agree with Gimenez for this list, but I don't think he ends the year that way. I thought last year was an outlier for him and am happy Cleveland just allocated some of their scarce salary space to him for years to come. Even in the minors those power numbers and most importantly, the OBP never approached what he did last year. I think he's due for some serious regression.

    Right, but there was space this year and they still went after Lopez. I'm not complaining as Lopez is a decent pitcher, but they probably wouldn't have went out and traded for him had they trusted the young guys. So will they trust them next year if they still have only a handful of 2023 starts? Or will they go out and trade for someone else? That's why I think they need to intentionally give Ober, Varland and SWR starts, and plenty of them, regardless of the current health of the rotation.

    Right. How many innings do they need to give these guys to trust them next year? They can’t keep trading for starters every year, so they need to plan on giving these guys MLB innings whether the current starters are healthy or not.

    I'm really excited for Miranda, he just seems like a professional hitter who could do this for years. I really hope they let Larnach have a full time corner OF job even when the vets are healthy enough to make the decision to bench one of them uncomfortable. Funny thing about Ober is, that I want him to have Maeda's spot in the rotation right now, yet he still ranks behind SWR and Varland on my enthusiasm meter. He probably shouldn't since he's already shown to be a good MLB starter, but that's just how excited I am to see this new batch of Twins.

    Good. The lineup looks like a disaster with a collection of extremely low ceiling vets. Buxton, Correa, Miranda, bathroom break. The starting 2B and 1B are out and the team's best hitting prospect, who can play both spots, is going to sit in AAA because there's somehow STILL no room for him? How many injuries will it take to see Julien, let alone the rest of the young hitters? The rotation looks really solid, but unless we actually think this is a World Series contender, is it worth punting a year of experience on the top arms in the minors, who have already shown they're ready to learn at the MLB level? Most will likely struggle for a year, so we're going to do that next year now? When the offense should be ready to take off? At least we get to watch the young guys in the bullpen. Do we really want more of the reliever versions of Donovan Solano taking up bullpen spots? And the options in AAA are not worse. Ober, Varland, SWR and Winder would all be preferable to Coulombe. And maybe that's where they can get the needed experience.

    I liked the Farmer move. But I like him as a super utility guy who’ll play 4-5 games a week. His versatility is his most valuable trait. I don’t want him starting or platooning at one spot while Polanco is out.

    What does that have to do with Coulombe? If they kept him wouldn’t you be more frustrated they didn’t find someone better than him?

    I want the most talented guys on the roster. They stuck with the vets on offense and in the rotation over the more talented young guys, at least they’re not doing it in the pen. I’m really stumped by the frustration over this. The Twins basically lost a LOOGY except the rules changed so LOOGYs are forced to pitch a full inning and against righties. This is not a big deal. People are acting like they cut Dennis Eckersley, not a guy vying for the last spot on the roster.

    I think you mean the opposite? Sands made the club because they CAN send him down, and will need to often and early. What are they going to do a week into the season when they have Hoffman and Coulombe in an overused pen and need to send someone down? Moran can't be the only option. They going to send down Duran and Jax if they need fresh arms? Just cut the super fringy guys, and Coulombe is super fringy. He's a 33-year-old soft tossing, junk throwing lefty who pitched 12 innings for the club last year. I'm failing to see the fasciation other than with which arm he throws with.

    That's what was said about Jax last year. I'm actually looking forward to seeing what Sands does now that's he's going to be a full time reliever. Most of the best relievers are guys who were given up on as starters.

    I was more excited about Hoffman than Coulombe, but I guess these moves make sense. Moran and Sands can be optioned when fresh arms are needed, which will likely be often with the early season schedule.
