But he only hits singles. I just don't see how the new rules will give him XBH power again.

Saints Setting Up for Loaded Rotation
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Going from the MLB to AAA is a tough jump in competition. Seems weird though that those two in particular need to be all star caliber for the Saints to be .500 when most of that roster has MLB experience, some with quite a bit of MLB experience. Also, with apologies to the Saints die-hards, I don't much care what their record is. And as usual with AAA teams, the better the players are, the worse the record is because the players keep getting called up and the roster suffers instability.- 31 replies

Twins Spotlight: RHP Travis Adams
nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Great stuff and I'm now very intrigued, but you buried the lede! I was looking for this the whole time and there it showed up in the last paragraph! -
I know I got a bit hyperbolic, but really, I'm just disappointed in the offensive ceiling of this club overall. It was constructed safely, and I do understand the benefits, but it's so absent of firepower. They signed Correa and extended Buxton, but still, this feels like a super vanilla offense, and that might be a generous characterization. In particular, I really, dislike the outfield situation because of this. Gallo OR Kepler should be the FOURTH outfielder, not two of the three starters. And I don't like the team's outlook any better if Buxton goes down and a no-bat guy like Taylor is manning CF instead of Gallo or Gordon or Celestino. Those are still bathroom-break at bats.

I understand the thinking, but the problem is that there is always depth. Nobody wants to scrape the bottom of the barrel for Ryan LaMarre or Jake Cave to be the depth, but seriously, it's not nearly the drop off people make it out to be when compared to Kepler and Taylor. From my perspective, rostering the young guys and being forced to go with guys like Cave and LaMarre as depth is much better than rostering Kepler and Taylor and making the young guys the depth and not contributing anything until someone gets injured or traded.

Taylor and Kepler are just such bad offensive players. Defense wasn't an issue last year, yet they really seemed to emphasize it more this off season despite the fact that the offense WAS a problem last year. Free agency wasn't good for bats, so there was little to do about it on that front, instead they should have gone for the upside in the young players they already had. They won't all work out, but there are enough of them to cycle through until you find the right ones. In any case we have a long enough track record to see that Taylor and Kepler almost certainly don't have MLB caliber bats. Why even trade for Taylor? Why not trade for an outfielder who could actually hit, that was way more important. I like Farmer, and I wouldn't dislike Solano, it's just that this roster really should have demanded more than one spot for the young upside players. It shouldn't JUST be Miranda. There's just too many average to below-average players on the roster.

It's certainly a reasonable roster, but I'm still pretty disappointed in all the spots given to lackluster vets instead of the hungry, more talented young players. Solano, Taylor, Farmer and Kepler? Ugh, it should have been two of those guys tops with the higher ceiling young guys fighting each other for the last two spots.

2023 Vikings Off Season Thread
nicksaviking replied to nicksaviking's topic in Minnesota Vikings Talk
As expected, Kendricks was released: https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2023/03/06/vikings-release-eric-kendricks/ He's been my favorite defensive player since they drafted him. It was time though. And I hope he's not the only tough decision they make. -

That's nuts. Just goes to show how much value there is in finding a stud young QB you can pay peanuts for his first 4 years. -
Be Prepared for a New Look Twins Team

Works for me. Though 2 innings deeper would put them levels no team has done since the early 1990s.- 44 replies

Be Prepared for a New Look Twins Team
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thankfully he has no more years of control. Dumping Pagan if he still stinks should be a much easier decision this year. I mean, it should have been easy last year too, but this year, it’s a layup.- 44 replies

Be Prepared for a New Look Twins Team
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
They’ve brought in free agent vets and traded for vets the past couple of years and they’ve been terrible. You want them to keep doing what hasn’t been working instead of using the internal options, which have worked well?- 44 replies

Checking In On The Bullpen
nicksaviking replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Santana has pitched over 100 innings the past two years and has poor strikeout and walk numbers. Sometimes you catch lightning in a bottle with journeymen retreads, like the Rays do with most of their relievers, but that's really not what I want this team to chase. They've done well using their excess and questionable starters in the bullpen. Go with Winder or Sands or Henriquez when healthy. Hoffman as a former starter has my vote too. Though since he can be placed in St. Paul, (for a bit) I'd aim to do that first.- 26 replies

Starter or Reliever Series: Josh Winder
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'd let Winder legitimately compete for an opening day spot in the bullpen, like he did last year. Typically, I'd be happy to keep rolling with him as a starter, as with that velocity, he does have promise, but since he's probably behind SWR, Varland and Ober on the enthusiasm meter in AAA alone, I'd probably make the switch to the pen as soon as the Twins find enough other starters to fill out the rotation in St. Paul. -
Whoa. Why is Twins Pitchers' Velocity Up?
nicksaviking replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Whatever is going on, increased velocity was likely something the organization looked into once the shift was removed. Keep more balls out of play.- 20 replies

Trade Kyle Farmer To The Dodgers? Maybe With Kepler?
nicksaviking commented on LA Vikes Fan's blog entry in LA Vikes Fan
I mean, I'd be good moving him, would the Dodgers really view Farmer as a better option than free agent Jose Iglesias + a prospect? Maybe. I don't see them having interest in Kepler though. I'd much rather have the versatile and more offensively sound Chris Taylor. Both had down seasons last year, but Taylor has been productive much more recently than Kepler. -
2023 Vikings Off Season Thread
nicksaviking replied to nicksaviking's topic in Minnesota Vikings Talk
He'll be off of a lot of boards altogether knowing how many teams operate. Saying that, the Raiders still draft at #7. Unfortunately for Carter, the Browns already traded their 1st rounder for an even worse criminal. They'd have had no qualms taking him. -
2023 Vikings Off Season Thread
nicksaviking replied to nicksaviking's topic in Minnesota Vikings Talk
As far as an "all-in" plan goes, it was good. I'm just not on board with going all-in since I see zero chance of a championship. As to Hockenson, it was a great all-in trade last year, but again, that team had zero shot at winning a championship, so it was kind of window dressing, even at the time. I'm not against extending him, but they do need more draft capital, and he might be one of the most attractive pieces they have since he's still in his prime (though they better draft significantly better in year 2). I wouldn't think too hard about what they gave up to get him compared to what they'd get for him now. He's a good, but not an elite TE, I'm not sure a 2nd is off the table. A 3rd is probably a reasonable expectation. -

nicksaviking replied to nicksaviking's topic in Minnesota Vikings Talk
A lot of good ideas, but it looks a lot like treading water overall. Unless merely chasing WC games is the goal, you can’t extend Cousins. Need to pull the plug on Thielan too. Not sure how I feel about an extension for Hockenson either. If best case scenario is they’re ready to complete in two years, will he be past his prime? I think you do JJ, the O-line and clean slate. No new faces over 28. No extensions unless they’re a likely legit asset in 2025 and beyond. -

And we thought the bluntness went out the door with Zimmer! I'm mostly curious to see what happens with Hunter. Obviously the contract is an issue, but he clearly wasn't used correctly last year, does Flores know how to use him right? Probably. Is his contract worth the gamble? Not sure. -
2023 Vikings Off Season Thread
nicksaviking replied to nicksaviking's topic in Minnesota Vikings Talk
Yeah, and then how long will teams want to wait? I mean doesn't every team that wants a RB want to see what happens with Pollard, Barkley and Jacobs first? And then the RBs that are probably closer to Cooks tier, say Sanders, Montgomery and maybe Jamaal Williams, Devin Singletery and Kareem Hunt will have to wait until those top guys are off the board. And then there are ten other guys even below them who were good enough to start last year and could interest teams for any number of reasons. -
2023 Vikings Off Season Thread
nicksaviking replied to nicksaviking's topic in Minnesota Vikings Talk
Or maybe not for a pick. I suppose there's a team out there with a defensive player in the same spot as Cook. I want this team to get younger, so I'm not sure that's really my cup of tea, but with all the holes to fill on defense, they're probably trying to get creative. I guess the Rams are shopping Jalen Ramsey too and they seem to be having RB troubles as of late. I'd still pass on something like that. -
Starter or Reliever Series: Ronny Henriquez
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He should have been prepped as a reliever the minute the Twins acquired him. And I'm looking forward to seeing him in the pen once he's adjusted to being a reliever full time. -

Twins Claim RHP Dennis Santana from Atlanta
nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Santana does nothing for me. Getting Hoffman on a MiLB deal is exactly the kind of bullpen move I was interested in though. And I really like the converted relievers one year removed from starting. If they take to the pen, it tends to be in year two of the transition- 37 replies
