Twins now in grace period with Diamond Sports group
nicksaviking replied to David HK's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
No, MLB says they can handle broadcasting if Bally doesn't pay up. This presumably would be free or dirt cheap, but I suppose greed could take over their decisions between now and then. -

Makes sense. What doesn't make sense is why the Twins couldn't pull of a bloated deal as well. This stuff all seems to be on the Dave St. Peter side of things. I usually could care less about the off field stuff, but he better pull his weight with the next TV contract because at some point the Twins aren't going to consistently carry a higher payroll than teams like Cleveland if they aren't making more money than them in broadcasting. The Twins seem to always be on the low end of broadcasting revenue, even when they sign a new deal. -
Maybe Max Kepler Needs to Strike Out More?
nicksaviking replied to Ted Wiedmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm up for trying anything, but I think with Kepler, he'd have to overhaul his entire swing to get new results. His high exit velocity numbers are somehow buoyed by his ground balls: https://www.brooksbaseball.net/h_tend.php?player=596146&gFilt=&&time=year&minmax=ci&var=hitspeed&s_type=13&startDate=03/30/2007&endDate=04/06/2023 Additionally, his heat zones show he hits a high number of ground balls no matter where in the zone the ball is thrown. Somehow, even pitches at the top of the zone and ABOVE the zone he's turning into groundballs 25%+ of the time. Pitches sitting right in the middle of the plate he's still driving into the ground 30-40% of the time. https://www.brooksbaseball.net/h_profile.php?player=596146&gFilt=&pFilt=FA|SI|FC|CU|SL|CS|KN|CH|FS|SB&time=year&minmax=ci&var=gb&s_type=2&startDate=03/30/2007&endDate=04/06/2023&balls=-1&strikes=-1&b_hand=-1 By comparison here's Joey Gallo's: https://www.brooksbaseball.net/h_profile.php?player=608336&gFilt=&pFilt=FA|SI|FC|CU|SL|CS|KN|CH|FS|SB&time=month&minmax=ci&var=gb&s_type=2&startDate=03/30/2007&endDate=04/06/2023&balls=-1&strikes=-1&b_hand=-1 Certainly laying off pitches below the zone will result in fewer groundballs, but Max hits too many balls on the ground no matter where in the zone they are thrown. -

So while this news is fantastic for a guy who can't currently watch the Twins, this still angers me in two ways. Why out of all of their broadcast deals, did they decide the Twins were a club they wouldn't pay? How in the hell do the Twins make less from their broadcast deal than Cleveland? I don't have The Athletic, so on the off chance none of what I said makes sense, I was going off of the Cliff's Notes version on MLBTR. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/04/mlb-seeking-overdue-rights-payments-from-diamond-for-twins-guardians-broadcasts.html -
Looking at Brooks Baseball, Sands was throwing four seemers, two seemers, sliders and splitters yesterday, and he barely threw the slider. That's too many pitches, stop treating him like a starter. Cut out the splitter or two seemer at least, and get that slider usage up.

Rarely do the first few picks go as expected, and after getting Lee last year, I have to think the Twins would be happy to pull that trick again and pounce on whatever consensus top player falls into their lap. Of course the few times the consensus top players DO go off the board, the Twins end up with a Tyler Jay or Kohl Stewart.

Future Twins Weigh in on an Electronic Strike Zone
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Surprised all the young hitters don't want it. They must not have grown up watching ball and knowing the vets tend to get an extra inch or two shaved off of the strike zone compared to the rookies.- 60 replies

Could Larnach end up being the team MVP? He looks like he was hyped up to look like two years ago. An under considered factor about the team having so much 'depth' is that they have absolutely no reason not to be cautious with IL decisions. If Kepler even MAYBE needs to go on the IL, just do it.

Wichita Wind Surge Opening Day Roster - 2023
nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Wow, only two catchers and Isola being one of them? I was pretty high on his bat last year but everyone seemed pretty sure he couldn't stick at catcher. This says otherwise and I'm back on that bandwagon! Also, Anthony Prato and his excellent on base skills seems highly under-appreciated. I know he's largely an infielder, but this team doesn't have right handed outfielders who can actually hit AND get on base so I think he's going get a look on the MLB team sooner than people expect.- 22 replies

Cedar Rapids Kernels Opening Day Roster - 2023
nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Surprised and encouraged that Rodriguez isn't starting in Ft. Myers! I'm kind of torn on what they should do with Nowlin. With Varland and Festa, the Twins have shown to be able to find and/or develop starting pitching prospects lower in the draft, but Nowlin is so slight compared to the other guys and the Twins could use more left handed depth. I might be tempted to put him in the pen and see if he can be fast-tracked. I guess I'd keep him as a starter until any issues arise, but first sign of one, I'd probably make the switch.- 18 replies

Very excited to see Winder in the pen. I wouldn't normally hurry to move him from the rotation except for the numerous prospects already ahead of him. I know he's being considered for multiple innings now, but I think he's going to end up being a high leverage guy if not by the end of the season, than by next year.

Larnach is seeing 4.57 pitches per plate appearance. The only other Twin over 4.00 is Correa. I agree, Larnach is taking the best at bats on the team at the moment and would make a good lead off hitter until someone more traditional gets called up.

I also disagree. We had long games BECAUSE Jeter and Garciaparra started trying to out-primp and procrastinate each other during national TV games. I'm happy to be away from the dog show theatrics and back to actual game action. I don't want the post season games ruined so the movie-star wannabe filled teams the Twins always end up playing can audition for their post-playing career TV gigs while they're in the batters box.

Newcomers help Twins win 2-0 on Opening Day, my 6-4-3 on Game 1
nicksaviking commented on Devlin Clark's blog entry in Devlin Clark
Agreed. I hope this Taylor for Buxton thing is over soon. I suspect it will pass about the time the weather warms, but who knows when that will be. But Taylor batting isn't the only problem. I'm glad Solano came through with a hit yesterday, but we already saw a continuation of last year's dreaded LOB trend. This team needs more authoritative bats, both in the bottom half of the lineup and at the very top. I mean, you're paying a guy 11M and pinch hit for him in the sixth inning of game one? I agree with the pinch hitting, but hard to justify the signing.- 3 comments

Wow, hell of a spring training stat line for Cave too. Is he holding that job until Bryce Harper comes back and the Phillies have to decide between Harper and Schwarber in LF? That's like not until June. He'll probably at least get the heavy end of a platoon as it looks like the Phillies only have 5 OF on their roster and Castellanos and Schwarber probably shouldn't be outfielders. Crazy to think Jake Cave, at the age of 30, might have a shot at a 'breakout' season, on a fairly loaded roster for the reigning world champs.

A New Outfielder Could be Twins Saving Grace
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
MLB added a bunch of new rules, but none of them allowed a team to score runs while on defense. Sorry, but I disagree with this. The Twins outfield defense wasn't an issue last year, and it still wouldn't have been this year had Gallo and Gordon split backup CF duties. This just made the offense worse, and the offense was and still is a problem.- 14 replies

4 Closer Candidates for the 2023 Twins
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I’m not sure about Pagan, but I think the others will be fun to watch this year. I think Winder will end up on the list sometime this year. Like the other former starters, I think his velocity will play up in full time relief, and he’s got a good slider and control.- 16 replies

Smarter to go with the young guy with options. We know the front office struggles cutting bait on struggling vets. If they struggle, they'd struggle for months. Neither is getting cut next week if/when the team needs a fresh arm. Not just because the front office gives vets too long of leashes, but because it would be a total jerk move to the player. They have zero qualms optioning young players though.

I'm not cheering for injuries and I'd not like to count on them anyway. If things are like 2021-22, there'll be starts for the young guys to audition. But if things are like 2019-20, probably just Ober gets enough of a run to evaluate him for 2024. We'll still be scratching our heads about Varland, SWR and anyone else making noise in AAA, even if they end up getting a couple spot starts at the MLB level. Really, how many outings are enough to feel like we have a good read on these guys though? I mean enough so the front office doesn't go back to the trading option, again? 10 starts? 50 innings out of the rotation and bullpen combined? If health and performance hold up for the current starters, the front office has to force the issue if only to not be in the same position in 2024.

Twins Lose Danny Coulombe to the Orioles
nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Seems to work for the Dodgers. -
My picks: Offensive MVP: Jose Miranda Pitching MVP: Tyler Mahle Julien would only be a sleeper in terms of fantasy, but yeah, I'm contemplating adding him now. I'm worried that he might be down awhile though if they won't even give him a job over Willie Castro. My Super Sleeper is really, really sleeping though. I'm going with Anthony Prato. If/When the team finally decides they want a righthanded outfielder that can hit, other than Buxton, he should be the guy over Garlick. He's really good at getting on base, he steals bases and last year showed giant increases in his previously low XBH categories.
