  1. I'm not sure we've ever had a good baseball commissioner; which may say more about it being a miserable position that no one should accept than it does about the character of the men who do.
  2. Old guy fondly remembers 4 man rotations. I kind of like the idea of using a starter for 5 innings so he can get the win and regular work, and then turning it over to a long guy for the next 3-4 innings. Rotate who the starter is and who the long relief will be. Might keep games more in control and reduce the number of true relief pitchers a team would need to carry.
  3. I don't know of any either, but the last time I was there I stayed at the Hyatt Grand. So did the players. The Taphouse is only about a block away from the hotel. Likely where I'll be before and after the Twins games this spring.
  4. While the outcome of the season is what counts the most, what we are grading would be the effort to make that a positive outcome. No matter who they signed or how much money was spent that would still be true.
  5. Payroll is far from the only expense incurred in operating a major league ball club and the supporting minor league system.
  6. Maeda will be a nightmare wherever he ends up. I know it would scare the bejesus out of me as a hitter to see him on the mound about to let one go toward me with his eyes squeezed shut like that. :-)
  7. The worry is that strikeouts mean more pitches thrown, and more pitches thrown means more wear and tear, and more wear and tear means shorter careers and more searching for replacements. Maybe less of a problem in the era of free agency. Sigh
  8. Old guy kinda wishing for old days as a fan. Reality bites, no matter who's ass is under the teeth.
  9. I'm apologizing at the start. I have no idea where I should post this, or how. So it is pretty much completely off topic, but....As an old guy my late onset retardation grows daily. For years I have complained to my friends that the Twins didn't have a pitching coach who was worth paying for the position. For the record, I love what Wes Johnson has done with the staff, and I hope the Twins lock him up for a long time.
  10. Bowman is fun at night. Actually, if you go up the island and onto Captiva there is a great beach there, and a Doc Fords within walking distance.
  11. Yes. The beaches on Sanibel and dinners at Doc Fords (I prefer the one on Sanibel, but whichever you go to you can't go wrong ). I never make it past the 6th inning before the call to the beach becomes too strong to ignore.
  12. Thought I saw 5 walks in 12+ innings
  13. Looks like McMahon has a little bit of a control issue to work on.
  14. Hard to say for sure, but some prospects are going to fall off the 40 man roster, and unless they let them go for nothing, a trade seems likely.
  15. Arraez is likely to be Marwin Gonzales come 2021, opening 2nd for someone else.
  16. I wonder if any of the prospects might push Cave off the opening day roster. I'm not sure if he is out of options or not. Seems likely.
  17. It's never time to deplete the farm system. Doing so doesn't guarantee a WS title, but does make future contention problematical for decades for a mid-market team.
  18. I counted it to the 10th barring postponements. Probably neither will turn out to be right.
  19. Baseball shouldn't be played in a snow storm. Think about standing in the batter's box waiting for that 100mph fastball coming from a pitcher who can't feel the ball. Or be reasonably certain of where it is really going to go.
  20. Hitting, and getting a few easy outs against pitchers.
  21. Doesn't 8 players with 20+ home runs also set some sort of record? Been tickling my memory, but I can't remember for sure.
  22. Seems probable that simply adding muscle has increased his bat speed and shortened his swing.
  23. Nope. What's on second.
