  1. I almost dread having a 5-run lead - nothing good ever seems to come of it.
  2. Next time I'm supposed to pitch I need a phone call or something. Sometimes I get to the game thread too late to warm up.
  3. edit: forgot to quote when I first posted That would be awesome. I still have the jersey in my closet. That's probably the only reason it would be awesome. Maybe next year is the year he finally puts it together and wins a Cy Young. (I've been thinking that for a decade; why stop now?)
  4. Yes, it's Tom Clancy. There are a couple of guys who are continuing his Jack Ryan/Jack Jr. series. (Clancy died a few years ago.) Clive Cussler writes (mostly ghost-written now) formulaic action-adventure that has interesting historical, nautical, and archaeological tie-ins and ludicrously far-fetched plots. (The movie Sahara was based on one of his characters; I'm not sure if there was one book it was based on.) James Patterson is very prolific. From Wikipedia: "His novels account for one in 17 of all hardcover novels sold in the United States; in recent years his novels have sold more copies than those of Stephen King, John Grisham and Dan Brown combined." He has two series' I kind of like (Private, Women's Murder Club) and a couple I don't (Alex Cross is his best-selling series, but I can't get into it.) The recent movie Alex Cross was based on his work. There were a couple of earlier Cross movies - Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls.
  5. I don't think we will know for sure for another year or two (when Murphy makes his first all-star game appearance while Moya is serving up BP coming out of the Twins' bullpen.) (Yes, THAT was sarcasm. I hope.)
  6. Puig again - a DP would be nice (or a shot to the ribs.)
  7. After the last two days it's hard to be too confident the are wrong. That 1-2-3 6th by Santana helped. I see he's hitting in the 7th, so Molitor must be developing a realistic view of the bullpen too.
  8. I don't read much other than the Bible, but I do go through a lot of audiobooks. Agent Zigzag was a great, true spy story. I like Daniel Silva's Gabriel Alon series, Louise Penny's Armand Gamache series, Alex Berenson's John Wells series. All are very different, but the writing is a step up from Baldacci, Patterson, Clancy & Co., etc, and about three steps up from Cussler (who I still occasionally like to listen to.) Our library has audio books available for 10-day download on two apps - Overdrive and One-click Digital. The don't have nearly the selection of Audible, but they're free vs $15/month.
  9. He was a "don't let his small frame break down" away from being a #2 starter. He was too small to pick #1 and too good to let slide too far.
  10. I think all of his examples were. (Viola was drafted by the Twins, wasn't he?) Heck, how does he remember what Viola had when he came into the system - I sure don't. I vaguely remember Blyleven as a rookie, but I definitely don't remember his brief minor league time. I'm not sure how much of a trend we can establish based upon a few examples over a 45+ year period.
  11. We still have September call-ups to come - can we get to 50? I think great pitchers get more calls because they hit their spots and the catcher can actually frame it instead of stabbing at it. I've seen a lot of pitches hit the zone but called balls because the catcher was set up on the other corner.
  12. RE: "the Braves had Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz for 10 years and only won 1." I remember one of those 9 years they didn't win. I think that bumped me up to 486 hours and 5 minutes for 1991. I agree with you about the 2001-2010 teams - those were a lot of fun and we got to experience some true greatness in Santana and Mauer. The postseason was disappointing, but I'd rather have that than what we had the past few years.
  13. I still think they could be right (if he stays healthy, which is a big if.)
  14. Minor league attendance tends to fluctuate a lot based on day of the week and special promotions. I'm curious how much of that was Tebow, how much was Friday night (with many people taking Monday off to start a 4-day week-end), and how much was "Fireworks Friday" (with the 4th just around the corner). The team site didn't miss the chance to play up the appearance:

  16. I saw the two they one, although for 1987 I followed it in the Stars & Stripes newspaper and had to wait for family to send me the video tapes to watch the games. I didn't see the 1965 series - we were in the process of moving at the time. Plus, I was 10 months old. They lost, so I got caught up on the experience by watching he Vikings in a few Super Bowls.
  17. I bet no on this, so you will have to post the final answer.
  18. That can't be it. I usually don't dislike those like I do this one. . (Where is the ducking for cover emoticon when I need it?)
  19. They were just getting warmed up.
  20. In left field or out beyond it?
  21. We really need an ace instead of Gibson. Same sentence isn't a problem.
  22. Maybe it was the camera angle, but that Sano HR didn't look like much coming off the bat, but he's so strong it just carries. It didn't look anything like the Vargas shot yesterday, but it wasn't that much shorter. If he ever really get ahold of one...
