  1. It's hard to say a bench bat would have made two games worth of difference, given the fact that the difference between a Vargas/Park and whoever they might hit for is significant but not huge. I'd still rather have the bat than having two black holes on the roster (pitcher # 13 and DanSan.) I almost lost it when Santana was a defensive replacement yesterday, but then he made a nice play on the carom off the wall to save a run and hold the batter to a single. I could easily see Grossman butchering that play into a triple... Since the original topic was the other Santana, I will add my agreement that I'd be open to trading him if the team is below .500 and the return is significant, but his contract is looking pretty good right now, so there is no need to force the trade if the other teams aren't offering a premium.
  2. It might be that Shields has lost so much off his "fastball" that it now has arc rather than sink.
  3. I take it you remembered Juan Rincon and changed your mind on this one?
  4. I told my daughter she can date when she's 30. Only 8 years to go!
  5. Carole? And all this time I thought ChiTown was her real name.
  6. Let me guess, you increased it by one, and the suckers all used it on your post.
  7. Of course, if there was real stability I'd have that Rubio jersey in Lakers purple and gold. OK, I probably wouldn't, but would have picked the Minnesota team had there been one, rather than the Celtics, who were closer to home at the time and were winning a few championships during the Cowens/Silas/Jo Jo White era. I shudder at the thought of liking the Lakers. I always relished having two reasons to hate them - the rivalry with the Celtics and the fact that they ditched Minneapolis. (At least change the name - how many %^#* lakes are there in LA?)
  8. That has to be about the worst tiebreaker ever. Just running through some possibilities, run differential, head-to-head run differential (among the three tied teams), runs scored per inning (total and then head to head), baserunners and baserunners allowed per inning (again, both total and then head to head). Can you imagine a team advancing because a scorer decided to change a ruling from hit to error? A coin toss is a better second tiebreaker than ER/inning.
  9. They are somewhere between dislike and hate. I dislike most matte helmets. I hate the White Sox. Most of you can do the rest of the math - that was demonstrated a couple of days ago.
  10. I've called that one before. The pitch started out up and in and you could see him tense up to "take one for the team." It was a curveball, and he followed it out over the plate with his arm, just above the elbow. "Dead ball. The pitch is a strike. Come on back, batter." He was incredulous - "The ball hit me." I told him that it was in the strike zone when it did. When he came back out to his position (catcher), he apologized for arguing (which was very minor anyway) and said he just didn't know it could be a strike.
  11. Did Chief miss his line again? Hopefully we can get him some more practice.
  12. You might be right. It has been so long that our recognition skills are rusty.
  13. Well, it wasn't 12-1 as the established pattern required, but I'll take it. I was looking forward to 15-1, 18-1, and 21-1 vs. the White Sox, but come playoff time that game 1 score of 492-1 would be kind of boring.
  14. I didn't see the FoxTrax on it, but it sure looked like it tailed back over the corner. Gibson is looking pretty good - I'm not sure who stole our pitching staff from last year and replaced them with look-alikes, but don't let them switch back.
  15. 6-1 in game 1, 9-1 in game 2. Scheduled for a 12-1 win tomorrow.
  16. Solid line drive single for Buxton (in the scorebook)
  17. Late to the party, but I don't know how you got through that intro without posting this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxYsgRsNg2s
  18. If memory serves me (and it usually doesn't), this is not a recent development. OK, I looked. No evidence I could see pre-dome. During the dome era it wasn't necessary at home, but I found a few examples of a break on day 2 of a series for another team's home opener (not opening day)- '92 @Mil, '96, 97, & 99 @Det. (I checked '74-82, 87-99)
  19. For the record, I voted yes, but the day off really doesn't bother me. I do hate the rally monkey, so I was left to chose between the affirmative options. If the vote was between mass murder, cannibalism, and rally monkey, I would have to chose the lesser of two evils (Do we taste like chicken?) since the third is unthinkable.
  20. It could be worse. It happens to me after I think, too.
  21. In theory, it seems like it should be easy. In practice, it's harder than finding the queen in three-card monte.
  22. That's the long was to say "Rosario for clean-up."
