  1. That was more sad than crushing. We didn't trade the Justin Morneau, we traded the shadow of the player Morneau used to be.
  2. This year there is no pitching that is worth the massive contracts, even if the Twins were inclined to spend the money.
  3. In my younger days he was my favorite player. I went through several of those plastic batting helmets, and each one had #29 on the back. I can still do a recognizable imitation of his swing when I go to the batting cage - that's pretty good for a guy who's 6'1"/260 and normally bats right-handed. Prayers for a full recovery so we can see him out there again in spring training with another generation of Twins players.
  4. Except DaveW's Dozier thread - that is an awesome, classic monument to excess! It was worth every bit of the bandwidth it consumed (except possibly posts 995-1000.)
  5. Maybe the Dodgers can throw him in to get this done already. (That was our post 1000?!?!?. It figures.)
  6. Had to change my profile pic just to rub it in.
  7. Post 18. I assumed that feline-looking Santa on your profile pic showed where you stood on he issue.
  8. Agree 100%!! (I had to get that out to soften the wrath to come when I reveal I'm firmly on the Dog side of the major ongoing controversy.)
  9. It has been almost 27 hours now. I think the trade was held up for four hours to punish Dave for spilling the beans. Expect the announcement at 7:19 pm CST. (I guess that makes the next delay my fault.)
  10. I want awesome! After suffering through last year, we deserve awesome.
  11. A couple more factors that may or may not have been covered (I've only read 2 of 5 pages of posts, but if I wait until I'm done I will forget what I was going to say) [Edit - 2 of 31 pages!] : 1. The market for starting pitching is a sellers' market because there is very little available among the free agents. 2. The "plays once every 5 days" thing is true, but the impact on the one day can be 5x as valuable as average impact of a position player. 3. When you add an ace, chances are he's replacing a replacement-level pitcher, since most teams have a AAA-AAAA shuffle at the 5th starter position. Most contending teams can come up with a league-average 2B on the cheap and make of the offense elsewhere if the price tog for Dozier goes too high.
  12. I'm pretty sure mine could, although my sanity, if it was still around, probably wouldn't.

    My Rule 5 Pick

Walking 8 batters per 9 innings is tough to overcome. Even if you manage to stash him for a year and get him back into the minors in 2018, he will have to stay on the 40-man while we're hoping to get him ready. I think I'd prefer any of the guys on this list except Crismatt: http://tenthinningstretch.blogspot.com/2016/12/five-plus-two-names-to-know-for-twins.html
  14. I wouldn't mind rolling the dice on the ghost of Johan's past. If he has some semblance of a fastball, he will probably get people out. If he doesn't, he won't make it out of spring training and will likely retire.
  15. My kids have had a HS coach who would do that. Drives me crazy - if you haven't taught them how to hit before they step in the box, it's too late.
  16. For a 1-0 game it had a lot of baserunners, so there was tension the whole time. This year's game really didn't have that for most of the game because it looked like the Cubs had it wrapped up (until Maddon overmanaged the Braves back into it.)
  17. Yes, that was a charity like I gave you (since you were groveling.)
  18. I don't like the managers consulting with someone monitoring the replay. If you were going to argue, go out and ask for a replay. if you weren't, play ball. Of course, I'm not sure how we control that when anyone in the stadium could be watching on a tablet.
  19. Another one for the list.
  20. I was with you until the last sentence. OK, we can add an hour for hair and make-up... At least the Brits name them accurately- news readers.
  21. It happened once in 1957 is not the same as seeing it on a regular basis, which we do now. I'd be interested in seeing a breakdown of the number of relief pitchers used and the average number of batters faced (and maybe a breakdown of batters face - the % that face 1 batter, 2 batters, etc.)
  22. Neither of those resulted in a constant disruption of the game - if anything, they produced the opposite. There have always been minor rule changes when the game gets out of balance, and I don't think forcing a pitcher to face more than one batter is unreasonable.
  23. I would prefer teams bring in a good pitcher to get a crucial out. No more LOOGY might mean no more 13 pitchers on the roster (and might mean fewer teams carrying 12 pitchers.) It would mean teams wouldn't have an incentive to carry a guy on the roster whose sole purpose is to disrupt the flow of the game. This matchup game is not the way the game has always been played. Managers have gone off the deep end with their pitching changes, and I think we should rein them in a bit. Maybe 2 batters would be better, but changing pitchers for every batter is boring. I like to watch the players play. I enjoy the strategy in the flow of the game, but the constant pitching changes are out of hand.
