I dug up that comment recently, and it’s posted somewhere. It was somewhat ambivalent and I read that as for this year, letting him work back strong in familiar territory. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Twins ask him to work out in the OF over the off-season to really learn the position, particularly CF

Martin could end up in the OF, too, so next year could be Marin, Lewis, Larnach, and Buxton and Wallner in the mix out there, too

Recently? Pete Rose did it, but I couldn't find anyone since him. In the modern era, which I'd describe as after Pete Rose there have been none. I don't think we'd see that again, and doubtful that would be Nelson Cruz.

Then title your article to reflect that. You spent too much time on the aspect of if and why Baldelli could be fired and didn’t focus on Cruz and his path to a managerial role. That’s what made it seem clicky in that it was a bit confusing what exactly this was about. I mean Baldelli being fired isn’t Cruz’ path forward. Instead maybe highlight on how some former players made it to the top and then compare how Cruz could do that. Or if it’s about Latin players making that shift, then focus on how other Latin players made their way in or how others were denied the opportunity. Baldelli potentially being fired really has nothing to do with that, but it’s a ‘clicks’ subject matter in these parts. But back to Cruz, I’d like to see him in a managerial role someday, whether here or elsewhere, but not sure how that path looks for him. I’d love it if he were a hitting coach for us, as a start. Or maybe a lead role in player development. But doubtful he, or any player, goes right from playing to managing. And he would have to officially retire from playing first. Has he?

No way. For many reasons, no. He was let go for good reason, and I don’t want that here.

Who is due back when? I think Polanco comes back first, yes? Then I'd put him at 3rd, Wallner goes down. (Whether or not anyone wants that to happen is beside the point ... that is the likely move, since he came up when Miranda was put on the IL). Hopefully there are some trades in the mean time, before the others. When Royce comes back, Royce is at 3rd and Polanco moves back to 2nd. Not sure what the corresponding move will be, but perhaps someone is traded or released (Solano?) But in the off-season, I work on getting Royce to the OF, leaving 3B for Lee. But I don't think we will see Lee this year, unless there are a ton of injuries. He isn't even in AAA yet. But I would move him up, just in case. What happens to Julien when Polanco and Royce are back up? There will be some rotating in and out and around. And it will depend on the 'elephant in the room' question that I won't get into here because it's been gotten into in every thread. My question is what happens to Miranda? And that all depends on him, but he may end up being shut down for the rest of the year. After that? <shrug> We do have kind of an on-going thread that much of this gets discussed from time to time, if you are interested to read some of the comments there. It can be nice to start fresh, though, so thanks for starting this.

Not just valuable, but the whole point - to get to the post-season. That doesn’t happen without Gray, imo. (And before anyone misconstrues my words for ‘just happy to make the playoffs’ that is NOT what I just said, it’s not what anyone is saying, so don’t go there.) -
If I recall ... didn't Gardy want Hardy gone for some reason? Still a horrible trade and one I wouldn't have made ...

Sonny Gray is someone who thinks out loud. He’s just talking and I don’t think it means too much. I’m sure he’s thinking ahead to retiring … maybe he will, maybe he won’t. Maybe he’s being strategic about the off-season maybe he’s not. He thinks out loud and is running through his options.

We are both remembering incorrectly. He’s never been long relief. In 2021 he came up in June and was a starter. He was moved to the pen in 2022 where he had success, and not pitching long relief either. A small number of times going two innings, rarely more than that, but early in the season. By mid-season he established himself as a very good one-inning reliever. And a few games only pitched 7, 8, 9 or 10 pitches, looking briefly through game logs. His biggest success has been as a one-inning guy. I stand by my comment … of things in last night’s game one could quibble about, I don’t think this is one of them. We won. Why are we second guessing the thing that worked?

So? They tried the multiple inning thing on him, when the first inning was good, it didn’t work. He’s had success again as a 1-inning only guy. There could be other quibbles of the game, but I don’t think this one was it
